What is the artist's job. Artistic professions where drawing skills come in handy

Any specialist in the field of creativity and art is called an artist. That is, the graphic artist, the director, and the actor positions themselves as an artist. In a narrower sense, an artist is a specialist in the field decorative arts; depending on the direction, such professions are distinguished in this area as illustrator, decorator, decorator, painter, caricature and so on.

What does it take to become a real artist?

Of course, talent is welcome. If without good working conditions there is still a chance to achieve success in this field, then without talent it is out of the question. Special education is a wonderful addition to talent. You can graduate from high school and arts and college, for example, in DPI (decorative and applied arts) or TDI (theater and decorative arts).

For a self-taught artist, even a perfect master of technique (even if his own, and not borrowed), it is necessary to know at least the basis of the rules of drawing, graphics, painting, which work in the same way in any conditions. These are the rules for transmitting light and shade, composing objects, creating color, and so on.

Is an artist needed in today's market?

This is not such a widespread and demanded profession as, for example, a course teacher or a businessman (), but it also has its own niche.

Depending on the conditions, the artist can either interrupt more than unstable earnings, working from order to order, or work on a permanent basis in a private or state enterprise.

The profession of an artist involves various work schedules. It can be standard work week- as, for example, at a decorator in a studio, editorial office of a magazine or in a theater.

Or maybe - a floating schedule, when the name of the artist has already been recommended, his work is very expensive, and therefore, he can afford to create for months, closing in the studio.

How is an artist paid?

On permanent work- from 20 to 60 thousand Russian rubles per month.

People with a free schedule can earn millions or pennies - it depends not only on ability, but also on which side luck turns out.

When planning to make this profession the main source of income, one should take into account that competent designers are always "in the price." Therefore, even with a real creative spark, it will not be superfluous to complete at least design courses.

Greetings to you, dear subscribers and site visitors!

In one of my old posts, I wrote about the opinions and reflections of different, as well as about what a modern artist breathes, what he writes and how much he can earn ... Here, let's think about it with you about the creative essence contemporary artist-creator ...

Have you ever wondered what the artist's life is like to an ordinary person? And not only the life of a professional artist who has achieved financial well-being... And many authors who are either just starting their way in art, or have already been wise by experience….

Or those who are still in search, and still can't find that line of intersection of their talent and artistic vision related to the needs of the market. And on which, your favorite business would allow you to earn a living without prejudice to your interests.

The life of a modern artist is both simpler and more complicated than that of a master in previous centuries

From communication with many of my acquaintances, far from the world of art, from my own experience and from conversations with many artists, I know that what such a master really lives with is very different from how others see his life.

Therefore, by the way, artists are often considered people "out of this world." Is it so? Is not it contemporary artists- are creators almost always a little crazy and eccentric, or do we just do not know all that a creative and subtle-soul person experiences?

View from the outside

I would like to first say about one obvious contradiction. What does the life of an artist look like for the average citizen, and regardless of which country the artist himself or this very average citizen lives in?

I won't be mistaken if I assume: artists are often perceived as some kind of spinning on the body of society. Let's draw the image of a modern artist in the eyes of society: a person who does not work in production or in an office often sleeps until twelve and appears in public only in a cafe, where he discusses obscure creative issues with his colleagues, or at exhibitions. This is so unlike the life of an ordinary "working" class, flowing between place of work and home on a strict schedule.

Many people even ask the question: how is an artist useful? How does it work for the benefit of society? That he creates something that would make life easier for other people, would advance civilization on the way scientific and technological progress? It seems to be nothing.

The life of a contemporary artist

People are even more skeptical about aspiring artists. Here, they say, he sits, draws, does not earn money. Always hovering in the clouds ... It would be better if I went to a normal job ... and in general, an artist is not a job ...

And only when some kind of fame comes to the artist, people suddenly remember that art decorates life, turns it from gray concrete everyday life into a beautiful rich canvas.

And then the most successful artists are suddenly honored from those who just yesterday shook their heads and advised them to go to offices to shift papers in order to earn money for a living.

So, in reality, it was in this contradiction lies a big problem contemporary artists. Indeed, before becoming a famous artist, almost every master went through the stage when his work, which now brings him serious money and makes him famous, was treated with skepticism and even irony.

An example would be that went to the understanding of the viewer and fame long years... Not without the support, of course, of his beloved muse, Gala. Creativity does not tolerate fuss! We often forget about it.

The life of an artist is actually ...

But in fact, all the most important, the most promising and the most incomprehensible for ordinary people lies in this "Sits, draws, dreams, hovers ..."

Yes, indeed, until the artist becomes a star, it is not so easy for the average citizen critic to understand why do art at all. And the works of many masters, whose paintings are worth millions today, are not understandable to most ordinary people.

Agree, not everyone will find meaning and beauty in creativity, one of the most successful artists in the world. By the way, Picasso's paintings are stolen more often than paintings by other artists! Paradox?

But in order to achieve the same success that Picasso did, the contemporary artist is forced to look for your language in art, your way of expressing on canvas(or not on canvas) what is piled up in his imagination.

Coming up with something new is always more difficult than copying an existing one ... after all, there was no Cubism before Picasso, there was not before Claude Monet, and it is impossible to imagine Alphonse Mucha without a name! After all, the artist's work is his life!

And while he is looking, he lives like a poor man: his paintings are not understood, they are not bought, they are not exhibited at exhibitions, they are not praised. It is necessary to somehow make ends meet, while continuing to create beauty, often - also under the ridicule and reproaches of loved ones ...

And only after years of life and dozens (if not hundreds) of canvases, the master comes to that manner that touches some strings in the soul of the viewer and his paintings begin to be in demand.

Until it happened the future master creates beauty in far from perfect conditions. I must say that success loves the persistent! Who believes in their dream he is certainly doomed to success!

There is also such a moment: true artist- that who will become a star- a very subtle mental organization. It is she who allows you to feel the beauty, but it is she who causes fear of criticism, of an accidental mockery of the work, of a possible failure of the exhibition.

Fame can come unexpectedly

And it is because of her that many talents wither in attics and in cramped rooms, afraid to appear to the world.

Also, take a look on the paintings of Vasily Shulzhenko. Not every person is able to withstand the streams of negativity that ill-wishers pour out on him. And nevertheless, without working at the forefront of criticism, he would not have become such a recognizable author ...

The most successful artists - Vasily Shulzhenko

And also with a sense of creative beauty is connected with the fact that the true artist-creator is not exchanged for "day labor" and handicraft writing. Undoubtedly, many modern masters and the representatives made a good fortune by painting portraits " the mighty of the world this ”, or“ fine craft ”for the sake of the public.

That is writing such pictures that correspond to fashion. Moreover, often it doesn't even matter what the painting was painted with ... with a brush or. Yes, yes, there are such informal artists!

Their names will not be imprinted in history, but these artists became commercially successful. For example, today there are a lot famous artists working in fashionable style hyperrealism.

Their pictures amaze viewers only the ability to accurately copy objects and people on the canvas... Well, how big photo, without creativity ...

Will their names be engraved on the tables of art history? Big question... Are they successful? Undoubtedly ...

And the artist who looking for creativity, your unique way of expressing yourself, often lives in poverty, refusing to write just for the sake of money. The problem with many artists is that they it is necessary not to show, but to prove to the viewer the beauty of this or that canvas.

Art shouldn't become a business where the consumer clearly shows with money what he needs. Today, from the very first steps in art, it is no longer possible to follow the rut of a portraitist, as it happened before, and make a name for oneself in portraits of a wealthy public.

Unless, of course, you are not, who became the discoverer of the style of pop art in the 60s of the last century ... but then he also sent art in a new direction.

Successful Contemporary Artist - Andy Warhol

In art, the consumer often does not know what he wants, what will delight him, and while the artist is looking for this way to delight, he is in poverty, is subjected to ridicule and constant pressure in the style of “... I would find a normal job!”.

It's getting harder and harder to come up with something new and delight the audience: more and more she sees, more and more beauty for her becomes commonplace. Not surprisingly, some of today's successful artists have forged their success on originality, bordering on outrageousness, which has been gradually tweaked to fit a concept that is acceptable to the public.

Part of these problems are solved art education where young talent is guided by experienced teachers. In part, the Internet solves the same problem: contemporary artists easily get feedback from wide audience practically without any financial costs - it is enough to show a picture in a blog or social network and rate comments.

Besides, contemporary artists earn differently: they not only sell paintings, but also design, advise designers and filmmakers, and it is precisely this "side" activity that allows many to provide for themselves and their creativity.

And yet, life and work of the artist-creator to success- this is most often a constant rush between creative impulses of the soul and banal needs for money, complicated by fears and psychological difficulties.

The life and work of the artist

Also grainy and not simple: I fulfill orders that have already been thought out in advance, as well as I am creative and create, coming up with new things, mixing different techniques. But I'm not afraid to show either ... I take part in exhibitions, exhibiting my works for display to a wide audience. I believe that for creative person it is important not only to receive energy, but also share it with other people

  • "Whoever has experienced the pleasure of creativity, for that already all other pleasures do not exist."Anton Pavlovich Chekhov

That's why, for those people who look wider at World of Art, I'm recording on purpose decorative paintings for the interior on canvas and glass and do-it-yourself furniture decor. After all, self-expression through creativity is a need for many people!

Friends, do you think that success can come to an artist if he is forced to do other things in order to feed himself?

Ask your questions below in the comments, usually, I answer all questions quickly

Thanks everyone. The conversation turned out to be incredibly lively and exciting:

Alexandra: Good article. Only sad. The utility of art - complex issue... I also often wonder why I am an artist? I am not torn into eternity. Really, it would be better if she did something useful. To create miracles. And who needs them, besides the artist himself?

Maria Trudler: Miracles for eternity ... Who needs them? Sometimes the creator himself does not need them. So many broken sculptures, paintings torn to shreds, burned manuscripts ... What are the artists striving for, if on the way to this goal they can destroy all their creations? A few days ago I saw the film "Camille Claudel". Worth seeing for everyone who asks themselves questions ...
Sasha, I do not belittle or exalt anyone. After all, artists-teachers, like you, are also needed, artists-artisans are also needed by someone. Everyone has different paths. Least of all, there is a need for those who are striving for eternity.

Alexandra: I am a teacher to a lesser extent than an artist) But teaching miracles is no less magical than creating them, and it is difficult to refuse it. Feeling like a creator, a person becomes happier. And the questions ... They may not arise, can they?

Maria Trudler: Many do not even have questions. And from this it becomes sad. Your work perfectly illustrates the drawing lessons that you publish. Have you ever tried to draw from life?

Alexandra: Of course) Portraits with photos are mostly made to order. But in the imagination - rarely. I love to draw people, and real people are more interesting than imaginary ones)

Maria Trudler: This means that you are not tormented by questions about the benefits of what you are doing. After all, people love their portraits.

Alexandra: Masha, very, very controversial ... People do not like portraits, they love themselves. Do you remember that in the fairy tale about Dunno, the artist Kistochkin painted a portrait of Sineglazka. And then he had to replicate it, because all the girls wanted their portraits to be the same, so that there were big blue eyes and so on. And everyone was happy, except for the artist. A very vital observation. Of course, it is easier to draw from a photograph, but even in this case it happens that a person does not seem beautiful enough in his drawing.

Maria Trudler: Yes, I understand what you mean. I don't remember the tale at all, but I even have a diary entry on this topic - how people want to be perfectly beautiful. Photoshop fulfilled this wish for everyone. Therefore, you are right, of course, portrait painters have always found it difficult to please people, they had to embellish and exaggerate their “beauty”. Well, if the artist caught some other unseemly inner essence of the character, then they might not have paid the money.

Onegai: I also liked the article. It makes you think. But as history shows, no one needed Van Gogh either. He sold one painting in his entire life. People did not recognize his work. Where is he now? History is on a par with great masters.
An artist is one who understands ... it seems to me so.

Alexandra:“Contrary to popular myth, Van Gogh never lived in poverty, on the contrary - he was a very popular and successful artist. His paintings were actively sold out and praised by critics. There are documents on the sale of his 14 paintings, but this is just a drop in the ocean. " - From Wikipedia, of course))
But, be that as it may, now he probably does not care which row he is in. I think it is better to be in demand during life than posthumously.
An artist is someone who understands ... - yes, I understand what you mean

Maria Trudler: Of course, “it is better to be claimed during life than posthumously,” who argues. If you don't have to make compromises for this.
Van Gogh left a stunning authentic document about his life and work - his letters to his brother. Everything is written there. Everything else is myths and legends.

Onegai: Van Gogh was selling paintings (not his own). His family was well off and they just had shops selling paintings.

Maria Trudler: Yes, at the very beginning he sold paintings, and was inspired by art. But he ran away from everything. Why did he begging, starving, wandering, enduring absolute misunderstanding, what do you think? Is there really a good reason to break away from such a wealthy life and an enviable career as a picture seller? Or is it crazy? You probably have to be crazy to do this. And he was not the only one who did this. Let's remember Gauguin, Cezanne, Modigliani and others ... It is not clear what to look for ... Art? Which practical use pictures that they didn't even want to hang in living rooms. Only for laughter and mockery, they were suitable in his time. For the amusement and amusement of fools. Van Gogh had a very violent and hypersensitive soul, which he wanted to express in lines and colors ...

Julia Ria: Wikipedia should always be checked))) I was convinced by experience.

Maria Trudler: Necessarily. This quote about Van Gogh from Wikipedia is very indicative in terms of the reliability of the information.
Not only Van Gogh was not recognized by his contemporaries. Most artists don't understand during their lifetime. Especially those who are ahead of their time.
“An artist is one who understands ...” Understands that he is an artist? Sergey, do you understand? What are you painting for?

Onegai: Maybe I understood, or maybe it seems to me that I understood. Maybe I didn't understand anything)

Maria Trudler: I realized that you are evading an answer. Which raises many questions.

Julia Ria:"Most artists don't understand in life." And I recently thought about such a problem. Many old masters were not known during their lifetime, but afterwards they learned about them. Now there are also many talented artists who are not recognized by anyone. They just can't get through. And it's sad that they may never be known about. It seems to me that the attitude towards art is cooler now. On the one hand, more opportunities have arisen, but on the other ... it is not talent that wins, but commerce.

Maria Trudler: So it was at all times. Reading letters and diaries of artists, I understand that absolutely nothing changes. There is a wonderful book-document of one famous gallery owner who communicated with many great artists of his time. I highly recommend reading - Ambroise Vollard "Memories of a Dealer in Pictures". There are so many amazing stories out there.
And talented artists can be with us - hungry, unwashed, unshaven, poorly dressed, living in basements and attics ... And no one notices them, no one knows about them. Since they cannot believe that such an appearance can hide talent. In the film "Basquiat" there is a very strong moment when one critic, sitting on a park bench, writes his thoughts about Van Gogh, and crawls out from behind him. cardboard box sleepy, future great artist and the idol of his generation.

Alexandra: On the contrary, it is the most common cliche. And if a person is clean, well-dressed and clean-shaven, who will believe that he talented painter? But this cliche turns me around, I, for obvious reasons, think that talent should be well fed. There are also other examples - Velasquez, Rembrandt. But for some reason they don't remember them. Once an artist, then there should be an unkempt beard, an absent look and a loft cluttered with canvases (or a cardboard box).

Maria Trudler: Unfortunately, this is not a cliché, but a sad reality. Artists can be outwardly different: well-fed and hungry, well-dressed and poorly, it does not matter absolutely. After all, what is important is what they do, and not how they look in the eyes of society, which by any means does not notice them. Great artists of the past, who worked to order, for some periods of their lives lived well as long as their works were liked by customers. At the moment when they created what they wanted, they immediately turned away from them, they fell out of favor, and ended up as someone like, many in complete poverty, like Rembrandt in particular ...

Alexandra: I was waiting for the mention that Rembrandt did die in poverty) Maybe it's not the malign society that is to blame, but tragic events personal life? Or an inability to do business? God knows him. And in general, who do you have to be to die rich? Warren Buffett? This is not the point. And in what his society noticed. Like Leonardo, Dali, Picasso and other comrades, who left us, in addition to paintings, a lot of reasonable quotes.
However, most people believe that the artist is necessarily hungry, barefoot and insane. I like to think that an artist can be successful and prosperous. And the main thing is that there are such stories.

Maria Trudler: Here are the words of Picasso: “Today, as you know, I am famous and very rich. But when I am alone with myself, I lack the courage to consider myself an artist, in the great, antique sense of the word ... I am just a mass entertainer who understands the needs of my time. "
I love to read the thoughts of artists, the ones that they themselves said. When they are alone with themselves, they become sincere. And in front of the public, you can play any role. All people have this different life... There is no personal merit in the fact that someone got a happy, “sweet” fate from above, full of wealth and success, just as there is no one to blame for the fact that someone is bitter and unhappy. Each person has their own tests.
By the way, there is a good old parable of the 12th century about the artists about the trials: “The king calls the vizier and asks how many artists there are in the country, to which he replied -“ 600 people ”. “Put them all in jail. How much do they draw? " “300,” said the vizier. “Now create a luxurious life for them. How much do they draw? " “3 ″. Here are three real artists, and the rest only enjoyed the privileges of artists. "
I think, Sasha, that I understand you well. Of course, an artist can be successful and prosperous, it depends what he is ready to do for this.

Wee: Damn, how I still love Leonardo da Vinci.
all artists are so different. I remembered the story of Patrick Suskind "Thrust to the Depth". It describes quite interestingly everything that many people say: during his lifetime, the artist seems to be not so deep, and not so interesting, and only after his death do they begin to look for this very depth in his works.
Masha, I remind myself again and again that they are standing on my shelf and waiting in the wings (rather, several hours) so that I finally take them in my hands and plunge into the Life of Van Gogh and Michelangelo.)) Even if there is much just fiction (but that's why those books are called fictional biography)

Maria Trudler: A wonderful story by Patrick Suskind “Thrust to Depth”! The life of the poor artist is described very truthfully. I also remembered the story of Hermann Hesse "The Artist" (Der Maler). There, the hero was all worried: “Is what I'm doing really needed? Maybe you don't need to paint these pictures? Would it be worse for me or anyone else if I just go for a walk or drink some wine instead? Does painting mean for me anything other than a little self-deception, a little forgetfulness, a little entertainment? "
It is good that Hesse is not as bloodthirsty as Suskind, who threw his artist from the tower, before cutting her drawings. But the critic's note at the end of the story is a brilliant irony over the whole situation, by the way, most likely taken from life. I myself know such stories.
Alyonushka, I advise you to read primary sources, for example, Van Gogh's letters! This is amazing reading. For a long time, the volume of his letters was my reference book.

redapp: Artists ... forgive me the audience of the blog and its author, but they always seemed to me a little out of this world. No, I'm not talking about comrades who draw LIKE, I'm talking about those who draw DIFFERENTLY. I know one girl - she studies at the art department of one Chelyabinsk university, paints pictures (some kind of abstraction) - she always thinks differently, different from ordinary people... I am not a great specialist, but at one time I talked a lot with the so-called. creative get-together (student) - novice artists, writers, journalists and sculptors. They were really interesting, and what is important, non-standard people, ready to think outside the box.

Maria Trudler: How well you wrote! Thanks. It is incomparably more difficult for those artists who draw, think, live ANOTHER, than for everyone else. It's great that you can see the difference. From the youth creative community, so few children usually continue to draw, write, compose, sculpt, and so on. The fate of many leads away from creativity, which is a pity. But they remain interesting in life, which is also good.

redapp: It leads away for quite trivial reasons - at some point people realize that it is easier and more profitable to be a manager in an office than to create.
I do not presume to talk about whether it is bad or good, but I will say one thing for sure. Of those who ts remained, for the most part, excellent professionals in their field are obtained)

Maria Trudler: Any creative way very difficult. This is a risk, a gamble, so usually parents of talented children resist with all their might, trying to put their children on a more reliable, safer, time-tested road. It is clear that with good feelings all this is done. And these guys, growing up, see and understand everything themselves, as you said - sitting somewhere in the office is much more normal than wandering alone in the labyrinths of creativity. And those who do stay, they do it out of hopelessness - they simply cannot live without self-expression, it becomes a necessity.

Sue: who is an artist. who is tossed about all his life, tossed about in thoughts, tosses these throwing on a canvas or other surface. one who is never calm and confident in himself, or in the world around him, or in both.
they are on the edge. on the verge of some kind of madness, in our understanding. very close to the thin line. one step.
is not it? to know.

Maria Trudler: Absolutely. This throwing from inner anxiety does not end until it finds a saving way out. But what kind of substance is this that artists so frantically want to throw out? Is there something important about it? What ultimately ends up on the canvas? Maybe it's just a release of inner tension for the sake of peace of mind… And there is no value in the results of this self-expression. Perhaps that is why people are so alien to the creations of artists ...

Olya Raskraskina: It is still difficult for me to say anything about this, because I am at the very beginning of the path. But while I like the idea of creating for others - I would not be able to create “in the closet” ...

Maria Trudler: What if others don't want your work? Then the "closet" will appear. It is impossible to find practical application for all works.

Olya Raskraskina: No, well, this is understandable ... As always, you want harmony: not to compromise your principles to please the viewer, but so that the viewer likes what you are doing.)) But this is understandable - the ideal….

Maria Trudler: Impossible, moreover.)) You are so sunny, positive and open that they will like the work.

Galina: I think that an artist is a little bit of everything. He is both inspirer and romantic and artisan. The point is that these features are inherent in different artists in different proportions. Some are more of a craftsman, and some are more romantic. But, each of them will find their fans, connoisseurs and defenders. I don’t like everything that recognized geniuses draw, but I think that it’s my own fault, so I don’t understand something, I don’t hold out ...

Maria Trudler: Of course, as they say, there is a traveler for every train. For every artist there is sure to be at least one connoisseur.))
And everything shouldn't and can't please. The main thing is to find your authors, artists who are close in spirit and outlook. It is impossible to love and understand everyone.

sherhan: Art is very subjective, and for some an artist is “a person who can draw”, the word “draw” is divided into “pictures” and “everything else” ... and for some, a thinker. It seems to me that in the modern world, I start calling everyone who is somehow connected with “creativity” as an artist, and break down “creativity” into ...
1.
2.
3.
etc.
Therefore, who is an artist - only an artist of his own direction can answer ...

Maria Trudler: Yes, the most remarkable assumptions about who an artist is were left by the artists themselves. Such a look from the inside. And from the outside it is difficult for everyone else to understand what this is - art, why it is needed, who makes it and why.

P.S. Our joint attempt to figure out "What is the use of an artist?" did not end with something intelligible, so if you have something to add, express yourself in the comments. I hope that someday I will understand what is the use of me. This question is still painful for me. I want to believe that there is benefit. Because apart from drawing, I do not know how to do anything else. Against the background of other noble occupations (to heal, teach, build, educate, plant, and so on) that really bring tangible benefits society, the artist looks like a completely useless creature. But why would nature lay down abilities aimlessly? It's not her style. The meaning exists, but it is hidden. It is not necessary to look for it on the surface. Consequently, searches and self-excavations continue.

Author name: Publish date: 01.08.2012 Discussion: Categories: About: Hi. My name is Maria Trudler. I am an artist. I love art. In all forms and manifestations. I paint, paint. I keep a handwritten diary about creativity in my free time from drawing. I publish selected entries on the blog.
