In addition, performers who have chosen such a vocal specialization master the art of vocal improvisation in professional level and are able to apply in practice specific techniques of sound production inherent in jazz. At school site you can start learning any singing style you want.

It is not hard to guess that pop-jazz vocals have grown at the junction of two directions, which are reflected in its name. Let's dwell on each of them and their contribution to the resulting singing style.

Pop singing

Combines all the variety of singing techniques and possibilities. First of all, it points to the singers working on the stage. In the mind of most listeners pop music consists of light and easy to perceive musical compositions... Singing is more natural and open than the academic manner, but it also requires honed vocal skills, correct position and sound support. V pop songs folk and jazz motives can be traced.

Jazz

First of all, it stands out for its ideal rhythm and harmony. The singers have high voice mobility and developed musical improvisation skills. To work in this style it is impossible without the ability to feel the form of the work. The vocalist must present the listener with his own understanding of the performed composition. Music theme can be modified in accordance with personal perception of the meaning of the song, but at the same time it is necessary to preserve the original harmony and beauty. The ability to feel musical partners is equally important.

  • acquire and bring vocal techniques to automatism;
  • master other skills required modern performer... These include, for example, working with a microphone and sound recording equipment.

Everyone knows that jazz vocals differ from pop and opera in principle. With the help of jazz, you can show the extravaganza of emotions and feelings not only with words.

To sing jazz, at first you just need to learn how to sing. Just learning jazz techniques will not give much results. It is important to master the basic singing skills. Namely: breath setting, articulation, learning to use resonators, work out vocal techniques of subtone, growl, wheeze, melisma, vulture, deepening and entrances. If your voice range is small, you can still work on expanding the range.

Jazz vocals are defined individual characteristics jazz vocalist

When you have learned how to do all this, and your voice will sound correct and professional, it's time to start with jazz.
Jazz vocals are determined by the personality of the jazz vocalist. These features include the following: the manner of jazz performance, certain vocal timbres, unique tonal qualities of the voice.

To sing jazz, you need to understand why a particular performer sang this way. The basic techniques and methods of intonation, which formed the basis of jazz singing:

  • Shouting, or shout-style(shout - shout) - a special manner of singing, using a variety of methods of speech intonation (whisper, groan, scream, falsetto, etc.)
  • Glissando(drift) - a gradual sliding of the sound, a smooth transition through all notes within the interval.
  • Dirt tones(English dirty tones - unclean tones) - one of the specific techniques of intonation and sound presentation. They are distinguished by unstable ("motley") coloration of sounds within the same register, strong dynamics, hypertrophied vibrato.
  • Bending- pitch bend to the note.
Only when you have mastered the rhythm, vocal techniques and methods of intonation, you can try the main attractive element of jazz singing - scat.
  • Scat singing- this is an improvisation, when the performer sings individual syllables instead of words. Initially, singing with a scat meant singing singing maximalono similar to how a musical instrument plays or performing a single musical line with it. Therefore, in order to master this technique, you need to listen not only to classical jazz singers, but also instrumental performers.

The first time the scat was performed by Louis Armstrong. It happened when, while recording, he forgot the words and began to sing meaningless sound improvisation in syllables. But Louis Armstorg used this technique quite rarely. Much greater heights in this direction were reached by the popular be-bop performers in the 40s.

Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn reached unprecedented heights in this direction.
They invented the so-called scat language, which became common to all jazz singers. Their voice was not inferior in sound to saxophonists and trumpeters.

As you can see, in order to master jazz vocals, you need to learn to sing professionally and master jazz vocal techniques. it basic elements with which to start. After that, of course, you should think about charisma and image, because there is no way in jazz without this.

Jazz Vocal Teacher - Reviews

Pros: I don't want to write formal words about Tatyana Vasilievna: "punctual", "experienced" and "benevolent". They can tell little about her. Tatyana Vasilievna came to study classical vocals with her daughter for 9 years. It's nice that she wanted to teach, and not culturally sit out the time of classes. The fact is that School of Music she does not give special knowledge. And the daughter did not know how to conduct, read from sight and sing from notes. Tatyana Vasilievna identified her weak sides and began to work on them ...

Conducting, opening your mouth correctly, singing to the notes and listening to yourself. I sorted out mistakes and showed the correct version of singing. She did not spare her singing talent and showed many times how the note should sound. During the lesson they had time to work out a lot. The teacher herself selected the educational material: Vocalise , Song, and did not work with the standard exercise book. Cons: No Description: Perhaps THIS REVIEW WILL HELP TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS IN THE CHOICE OF A TEACHER.

It so happened that I am writing a review about Marina Vladimirovna 8 months after the start of classes. I have been practicing vocals for more than 5 years, I had to change 6 teachers. What I am doing now with Marina Vladimirovna - Great Luck for me. This is a teacher who, from the first lesson, gives an orientation towards Success, towards Development. This is a very demanding, high-class, professional super educator. And very beautiful woman, and wonderful person!!! When I came to Marina Vladimirovna, I had ...

goal: to reveal your vocal data, not to be afraid to sing in public, to learn correct breathing, and just sing, enjoying your voice, bringing joy to yourself and other people. In the very first months of classes, the results became visible (or rather, heard))). Marina Vladimirovna painstakingly, with patience, love and faith in me leads to those subtleties of vocal skill, which I was afraid to even dream of !!! The voice grows stronger, muscles are developed that are responsible for the correct formulation of the voice, fears, internal blocks and clamps that prevent the voice from opening disappear. I am beginning to understand and feel how my body works when singing. Dividing the lesson into 3 parts: chanting, working with vocalization, working on the repertoire - gives tangible results. Each lesson is opened and something new in vocal skill is developed. Marina Vladimirovna, with great patience, shows and explains how to correctly do what did not work out. She selects such an association that will help to correctly take the right note, letter. Great importance is attached to correct breathing: how to breathe, how to breathe, where to breathe; we learn to sing so that the whole body works and feels the whole process of singing. Classes are very fruitful, joyful, intense. I have a huge incentive to learn everything that I can absorb into myself! I highly recommend to anyone who wants to reveal their voice, their vocal abilities; everyone who wants to develop professionally as a singer, vocalist should turn to Marina Vladimirovna Efanova for help. She knows exactly how to help you !!!

Jazz vocal improvisation

Improvisation is an integral part of jazz music. There is no jazz without improvisation. Therefore, not all vocalists undertake the performance of jazz compositions. Improvisation itself is based on knowledge of harmonic sequences and the ability to use various melodic and rhythmic variations based on them.

Jazz vocal improvisation is characterized by imitation of instrumental techniques of performance. Speaking simple language, copying the sound and technique of performance on various instruments jazz band. Hence the high demands placed on the skill of a jazz vocalist. Jazz vocals presuppose a singer's mobile voice, capable of accurately repeating (imitating) the part of the instrument and quickly intoning. For jazz vocalists, in addition to jazz vocal lessons, we recommend attending jazz harmony lessons and jazz improvisation lessons.

Breathing in a jazz vocal lesson

Correct breathing is the foundation on which you can build a building in any architectural style or line up a voice for singing in different musical directions: pop vocals, jazz vocals, classical vocals, etc. If you hear a strong volumetric voice from a singer, then this is not so much natural data as good performance breathing. It is these voices that we remember, are able to influence us, and we want to imitate them.

You can read about the difference between voice training for jazz vocals and voice training for other types of singing here. Exercises to develop the voice for jazz singing and exercises to prepare the voice for pop singing or academic vocals are essentially the same. The difference is that in a jazz vocal lesson, the teacher uses for chanting not only the well-known major and minor scales from classical harmony, but also the blues scale with its characteristic harmonies. Besides, in different types vocal uses a different presentation of sound, different techniques of sound production.

Without special training, you will not be able to develop your vocal range and master various vocal singing techniques. This means that you can sing only the simplest jazz compositions, provided that the tonality of the song is convenient for you, the melody range is small and the manner of performance is semi-recitative. A full-fledged jazz vocal implies a strong, developed vocalist's voice with great technical freedom of performance and the ability to improvise (see Jazz vocal improvisation).

Often in the first stage of teaching jazz vocals, our students, aiming at Professional Development, are engaged in the production of voice from academic vocals. After all, speaking on theater stage, academic singers have to sing without a microphone, accompanied by a large symphony orchestra... In this mode of singing, your voice will withstand the load only if you have trained it correctly in jazz vocal lessons.

For a jazz vocalist, however, as well as for a good pop singer, great value has the correct formulation of the voice. That is why we recommend to our students in jazz vocal lessons most time to sing without a microphone in order to properly tune the breathing-vocal apparatus so that your voice is not afraid of any stress and any conditions of singing. You can read more about voice setting and breathing setting on the page.

Do I need to develop my ear to practice jazz vocals?

If you are undeveloped ear for music, you need to develop it regardless of what kind of vocals you are going to do: pop vocals, jazz vocals, folk vocals, academic vocals. We all understand that if we do not hit the notes, we cannot repeat the melody exactly, then good singing will not work.

If you are doing vocals for yourself, want to sing karaoke, then you do not have to take a whole course in solfeggio (mastering musical literacy). Just vocal solfeggio is enough, with the help of which you develop stable coordination between hearing and voice.

In that case, if you want to professionally practice jazz vocals, you definitely need to master both melodic and harmonic. Read more about this on the pages Musical certificate and Hearing development.
