The idea was suggested to Shishkin by his friend, also an artist. And he even had a hand in complementing the landscape with bears. They turned out so well that the artists both signed the painting. However, Tretyakov, who later acquired this painting, left only Shishkin's signature, the second signature was covered over. Considering that the main style of writing is nevertheless closer in spirit to Shishkin.

And, indeed, Shishkin very accurately conveyed the general atmosphere of the spilling forest. We can watch the rays of the rising morning sun that only touches the tops of the trees. When a picture is too popular, it flashes everywhere and everywhere. In every tutorial. On candy wrappers (from which the wildly popular picture began 100 years ago).

As a result, the viewer loses interest in the picture. We glance over her with a quick glance with the thought "Oh, this is her again ...". And we pass by.

For the same reason, I did not write about her. Although I have been writing articles about masterpieces for several years now. And one would be surprised how I got past this blockbuster. But now you know why.

Why "Morning in a Pine Forest" is a masterpiece

Shishkin was a realist to the core. He portrayed the forest in a very believable way. Choosing colors carefully. Such realism easily draws the viewer into the picture.

Just look at the colors.

Pale emerald pine needles in the shade. The light green color of young grass in the morning sun. Dark ocher needles on a fallen tree.

I disagree with this position. It is important what angle the artist chooses, what kind of lighting, what fog and even moss. All this taken together reveals a piece of the forest for us from a special side. The way we would not see it. But we see - through the eyes of an artist.

And through his eyes we experience pleasant emotions: delight, inspiration, nostalgia. And this makes sense: to induce the viewer to a sincere response.

Savitsky - assistant or co-author of the masterpiece?

The story with the co-authorship of Konstantin Savitsky seems strange to me. In all sources, you will read that Savitsky was an animal painter, and therefore volunteered to help his friend Shishkin. Like, such realistic bears are his merit.

But if you look at the work of Savitsky, you will immediately understand that animal painting is NOT his main genre.

He was typical. He often wrote to the poor. I am happy with the help of pictures for the disadvantaged. Here is one of his outstanding works "Meeting of the Icon".

Yes, besides the crowd, there are also horses on it. Savitsky really knew how to portray them very realistically.

But Shishkin also easily coped with this task, if you look at his animalistic works. In my opinion, he did no worse than Savitsky.

Therefore, it is not entirely clear why Shishkin instructed Savitsky to write the bears. I'm sure he would have done it himself. They were friends. Perhaps it was an attempt to help a friend financially? Shishkin was more successful. Received serious money for his paintings.

For the bears, Savitsky received 1/4 of the fee from Shishkin - as much as 1000 rubles (for our money, this is about 0.5 million rubles!) It is unlikely that Savitsky could receive such an amount for a whole own work.

Formally, Tretyakov was right. After all, the whole composition was thought out by Shishkin. Even the poses and positions of the bears. This is obvious when you look at the sketches.



Co-authorship as a phenomenon in Russian painting

Moreover, this is not the first such case in Russian painting. I immediately remembered Aivazovsky's painting "Pushkin's Farewell to the Sea." Pushkin in the painting of the great marine painter wrote ... Ilya Repin.

But his name is not in the picture. Although they are not bears. And yet great poet... Which needs to be portrayed not only realistically. But to make it expressive. So that the very farewell to the sea is read in the eyes.

In my opinion, this is a more difficult task than depicting bears. Nevertheless, Repin did not insist on co-authorship. On the contrary, I was incredibly happy to work with the great Aivazovsky.

Savitsky was more proud. He took offense at Tretyakov. But he continued to be friends with Shishkin.

But we cannot deny that without the bears this painting would not have become the artist's most recognizable painting. It would be Shishkin's next masterpiece. A majestic and breathtaking landscape.

But he would not be so popular. It was the bears that played their part. This means that Savitsky should not be completely discounted.

How to rediscover Morning in a Pine Forest

In conclusion, I would like to return to the problem of overdose with the image of a masterpiece. How to look at her with a fresh look?

I think it's possible. To do this, look at a little-known sketch for the painting.

It is done with quick strokes. The figures of the bears are only outlined and written by Shishkin himself. The light in the form of golden vertical strokes is especially impressive.

Art critics have long proven that Shishkin painted the picture "Morning in a Pine Forest" from nature, and not from the wrapper of the "Bear Footed" candy. The history of writing the masterpiece is quite interesting.

In 1885, Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin decided to paint a canvas that would display the deep strength and immense power of the Russian pine forest. The artist chose the Bryansk forests as the place of painting. For three months Shishkin lived in a hut, seeking unity with nature. The result of the action was the landscape “Sosnovy Bor. Morning". However, Ivan Ivanovich's wife Sofya Karlovna, who served as the main expert and critic of the great painter's paintings, felt that the canvas lacked dynamics. At the family council, it was decided to supplement the landscape with forest animals. Initially, it was planned to "let the rabbits on the canvas", however, their small size would hardly be able to convey power and strength Russian forest... I had to choose from three textured representatives of the fauna: bear, wild boar and elk. The selection was made by the cut-off method. The boar disappeared immediately - Sofya Karlovna did not like pork. Prong also did not qualify for the competition, as a moose climbing a tree would look unnatural. In search of a suitable bear that won the tender, Shishkin was again resettled in the Bryansk forests. However, this time he was disappointed. All the Bryansk bears seemed to the painter skinny and unsympathetic. Shishkin continued his search in other provinces. For 4 years the artist wandered through the forests of the Oryol, Ryazan and Pskov regions, but he never found an exhibit worthy of a masterpiece. “The non-pedigree bear has gone today, maybe the boar will come up after all?” Shishkin wrote to his wife from the hut. Sofia Karlovna helped her husband here too - in the encyclopedia "Animal Life" by Brem, she read that bears living in the Vyatka province have the best exterior. Shishkin went to Vyatka, to the Omutninsky district, in search of the ideal animal. Unfortunately, very few people now remember the significant contribution of Vyatka nature to the painting "Morning in a Pine Forest". But in vain. To this day, a powerful and thoroughbred bear is found in these parts. It is well known that the bear Gromyka from the Zonikha animal farm posed for the emblem of the 1980 Olympics.

Memories of parents, chocolates and PR moves - this is what keeps us from forgetting about the painting by I. Shishkin "Morning in a Pine Forest" or, among the common people, "Three Bears".

Is it only Shishkina? The bears were painted on canvas by K. Savitsky, who at first depicted two club-footed ones, and then raised their number to four. Previously, it was believed that Shishkin, despite his rather significant successes in animal painting, was not able to portray bears, so he simply exploited poor Savitsky and did not even allow him to sign on the picture. In fact, the artists were friends, and the bears appeared after the latter said that the canvas was not dynamic. Shishkin could draw anyone, but not bears, so he gave Savitsky the opportunity to revive the picture and sign. The collector P. Tretyakov was not so loyal: he bought the painting from Shishkin, which means that the authorship is his, so there can be no Savitskys here. In general, the inscription was erased and "Morning in a Pine Forest" began to be considered one of the key paintings in the work of one of the most prominent Russian landscape painters.

Sweets "Bear-footed" with a Shishkin reproduction on a wrapper and gave the name to the painting "Three Bears". The delicacy that appeared had a filling of almonds, cocoa beans, was expensive, but it was so tasty that even the agitator of everyone and everything V. Mayakovsky could not resist and wrote that if you want "Bears", then put a certain amount of money on your savings account. This is how "Clubfoot Bear" became "Three Bears" (and there are four of them in the picture), candy - one of the signs of the USSR, and I. Shishkin - a national artist.

True, he was the singer of nature native land and up to "Bears". The artist wanted and knew how to surprise, first of all, with landscapes, which he painted with such jewelry that he earned the glory of a master of detailing. Only here you will see a haze of fog, as if hovering among the branches of century-old pines, soft and cozy moss on the boulders, clear water streams, morning or evening coolness, midday heat of summer. Interestingly, all of the artist's canvases are partly epic, but always monumental. At the same time, Shishkin is not pretentious, he is just the person who sincerely admires the majestic nature of his native land and knows how to portray it.

"Morning in a Pine Forest" pacifies the poise of its composition. Three bear cubs look very harmonious with their mother-bear, and I just want to apply to two halves of a fallen pine tree divine proportion... This picture is like a random shot on an old camera, which was taken by a tourist who had been looking for a true virgin nature for so long.

And if you look at the color of the picture, then the artist seems to be trying to embrace all the richness of the colors of the dawn time. We see air, but it is not the usual blue hue, but rather blue-green, a little cloudy and foggy. The predominant colors that surrounded the clubfoot inhabitants of the forest are green, blue and sunny yellow, reflecting the mood of the awakened nature. Bright shimmers of golden rays in the background seem to hint at the sun, which is about to illuminate the earth. It is these glare that give the picture solemnity, it is they who speak of the realism of the fog above the ground. “Morning in a pine forest” is another confirmation of the tactile nature of Shishkin's paintings, because you can even feel the cool air.

Look closely at the forest. Its appearance is rendered so realistically that it becomes clear: this is not a forest clearing, but a deaf thicket - the true concentration of living nature. Above her, the sun had just risen, the rays of which had already managed to make their way to the top of the treetops, splashing them with gold and again hid in the thicket. The damp fog that has not yet cleared seems to have awakened the inhabitants of the ancient forest.

Here the cubs and the she-bear woke up, developing their vigorous activity. The painting "Morning in a Pine Forest" reveals the skill of a realistic image and its quality, which is in many ways ahead of modern digital technology. Every blade of grass, every ray of the sun, every needle of a pine tree is written by Shishkin lovingly and reverently.
