Until recently, the name of Elena Polenova remained in the shadow of the glory of her brother - a famous Russian artist XIX v. Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov, although her work was no less original. She stood at the origins of the Russian neo-romantic style, following the traditions of V. Vasnetsov's painting. Elena Polenova - author of magical illustrations for Russian fairy tales who embodied the "captivating madness of childhood fantasy." In 2012 in Tretyakov Gallery her personal exhibition was held - the first after 1902. After that, they remembered and started talking about her again, and her work became known to a wide audience.
A. Benois wrote about her with admiration: “Polenova earned herself the eternal gratitude of the Russian society for the fact that she, the first Russian artist, paid attention to the most artistic field in life - on children's World, on his strange, deeply poetic fantasy. She, gentle, empathetic and true good person, penetrated into this closed, so abandoned children's world, guessed its peculiar aesthetics, all became infected with the captivating "madness" of children's fantasy. "
Fairy tales for Polenova became a kind of escape from reality: at the age of 27, she survived personal tragedy who broke her and almost became the cause of insanity. The girl was going to marry a doctor whom she met while working in a hospital during the Russian-Turkish war. But her parents were strongly opposed and upset the marriage. After that, Elena decided to devote the rest of her life social activities and art.
Her brother, artist Vasily Polenov, helped the girl find salvation in art. In the manor famous philanthropist Savva Mamontov, the best representatives gathered in Abramtsevo at that time creative intelligentsia... Together with Mamontov's wife, Elena traveled through the villages, collecting folk costumes, household utensils, towels and tablecloths for the future museum. In the carpentry workshop, unique furniture was created based on her sketches.
Fairy tales became a real outlet for Polenova: she created illustrations for "The War of Mushrooms", "Frost", "Cat and Fox", "White Duck", "Wolf and Fox", "Hut on Chicken Legs", "Stepmother and Stepdaughter". She said about many works that they came to her in a dream. The atmosphere of her paintings is so mysterious and mystical that it is easy to believe in it. To illustrate, she took not only famous fairy tales from the collection of Afanasyev, but also those that she heard and wrote down herself, in the surrounding villages.
Polenova's hobby folk art was versatile: she created sketches of furniture, inspired by folk motives, selected for theatrical performances The Mamontov circle, peasant costumes brought from the Tula province, made sketches for embroidery and wallpaper, not only wrote illustrations for fairy tales, but also stylized the text to resemble an old font. According to critics, Polenova's work contributed to the formation of the Russian national version of the Art Nouveau style, stood at the origins of the neo-romantic style.
“I would like, - wrote the artist, - not to lose two abilities - the ability to help, inspire, serve as a support and impetus to work for other artists. Another ability is to love and believe and get carried away with your work. I don't need anything else. Of course, the appreciation, support, interest of other people, especially those whose opinion you value, are very precious, but immeasurably more important are the forces that live inside and which give nourishment to the fire burning in the soul. If only it does not go out ... ".
Elena Polenova was not the only artist who saw the plots of the paintings in a dream:
Once upon a time, my grandfather lived with another wife. The grandfather had a daughter, and the woman had a daughter. Everybody knows, how to live with stepmother : you turn over - a bit and you will not trust - a bit. A own daughter whatever he does, they pat him on the head for everything: clever.
MOROZKO FAIRY TALE
The stepdaughter also watered and fed the cattle, firewood and I carried water to the hut, stoked the stove, chalk hut - even before the light ... You can't please the old woman with anything - everything is not so, everything is bad. At least the wind will rustle, but it will calm down, but the old woman disperses - it will not calm down soon.
So the stepmother came up with the idea of squeezing her stepdaughter out of the light.

The old man lost his temper, began to cry, but there was nothing to do, you couldn't argue with a woman. Harnessed the horse:
Sit down, dear daughter, in the sleigh.
I took the homeless woman into the forest, dumped in a snowdrift under a large spruce and left.
The girl sits under the spruce, trembles, chills through her. Suddenly he hears - not far away Frost crackles on the trees, jumps from tree to tree, clicks.
He found himself on the spruce under which the girl was sitting, and from above asked her:
- Is it warm for you, girl?
- Warmth, Morozushko, warmth, father.
Frost began to descend lower, crackles more, clicks:
She breathes a little breath:
Heat, Morozushko, warmly, father.
Morozko went down even lower, cracked more, clicked harder:
Is it warm for you, girl? Is it warm for you, red? Is it warm for you, honey?
The girl began to ossify, moving her tongue a little:
Oh, warm, dear Morozushko!
Here Morozko took pity on the girl, wrapped her in warm fur coats, warmed her with duvets.
And the stepmother celebrates her commemoration, bakes pancakes and shouts to her husband: Go, old man, take your daughter to bury!
The old man went to the forest, reaches that place - under a large spruce tree sits his daughter, cheerful, ruddy, in a sable coat, all in gold, in silver, and around - a box with rich gifts.
The old man was delighted, put all the goods in the sleigh, put his daughter in bed, took him home.
And at home, the old woman bakes pancakes, and the dog is under the table:
- Tyaf, tyaf! The old man's daughter is in gold, in silver they are taken, but the old woman is not married.
The old woman will throw her a pancake: - Not yapping like that! Say: "They take the old woman's daughter in marriage, and they take the bones of the old woman's daughter ..."
The dog will eat the pancake and again: - Tyaf, tyaf! The old man's daughter is in gold, in silver they are taken, but the old woman is not married. The old woman threw pancakes to her and beat her, the dog - all her own ...
Suddenly the gate creaked, the door opened, the stepdaughter goes into the hut - in gold and silver, and shines. And behind her they carry a high, heavy box. The old woman looked - and hands apart ...
Harness another horse, old man! Take, take my daughter to the forest and plant it in the same place ...
The old man put the old woman's daughter in a sleigh, took her into the forest to the same place, dumped her into a snowdrift under a tall spruce and left. 
The old woman's daughter is sitting, chatting with her teeth. A Frost crackles through the forest , she jumps from tree to tree, clicks, her daughter looks at the old woman:
Is it warm for you, girl?
And she told him: - Oh, it's cold! Don't creak, don't crack, Frost ...
Frost began to descend lower, crackling and clicking more.

- Oh, hands, feet are frozen! Go away, Morozko ...
Morozko went even lower, hit it harder, crackled, clicked:

- Oh, completely chilled! Get lost, get lost, damned Frost!
Morozko got angry and so enough that the old woman's daughter ossified.
A little light, the old woman sends her husband:
Harness quickly, old man, go for your daughter, bring her in gold and silver ...
The old man left. And the dog under the table:
Tyaf, tyaf! The grooms will take the old man's daughter, and they carry the bones of the old woman's daughter in a sack.
The old woman threw her a pie:
Not yapping like that! Say: "The old woman's daughter in gold and silver is being taken ..."
And the dog - all its own: Tyaf, tyaf! The old woman's daughter is being carried in a sack ...
The gate creaked, the old woman rushed to meet her daughter. She turned her horn away, and her daughter lay dead in the sleigh. The old woman began to shout, but it's too late.

Then he catches up even more cold and blizzard and again asks, and she respectfully replies that it is warm. Then he becomes sorry for her and gives her fur coats. According to the second version, Morozko offers to knit a shirt, the girl does not refuse and sews it all night. In the morning, Morozko appreciates the diligence and presents a chest of jewels. In all two versions, the father takes his daughter home in the morning, the stepmother is angry, what kind of things are they and sends her daughter in the hope of getting riches too, but her daughter is not brought up and in the first case, she says: "Shine Morozko", but in - second - "I will not do anything." Morozko is very angry and makes a blizzard, covering with snow. Nobody finds her in the morning.

Yard dog - foreshadowed trouble in the house. If the dog was constantly barking, then the owner perceived this as an unkind sign and always listened to the four-legged guards.
