Spring in Moscow will be "hard". In May, the capital will be visited by the "pioneers of nu-metal", the American group KoRn. Together with another legend of the hard scene - the group Soulfly, the musicians will go on a big tour in support of the latest albums throughout Russia.

In anticipation of the show, the web site spoke to the band's guitarist James "Monkey" Schaffer, who spoke about the return of Brian "Head" Welch, the twentieth anniversary of their first album, and why the term nu-metal is "dumb".

Hi Monkey! In May, KoRn will return to Moscow. I hear Jonathan likes it here. And you?

I don't just like Moscow: I love it! I remember when we played with you last time, it was unrealistically cool. So many people came to the club, everyone felt so much drive ... And the sound was gorgeous. A very memorable concert! I am terribly glad that we are going to you again.

And we are so glad! Have you seen anything interesting in Moscow during your last visits?

Nothing special ... well, the most common tourist places - the Kremlin, Red Square, all that.

Live concerts by KoRn are something. You have crazy energy. I heard that the future of the show will be almost a rock show ...

I have no idea, to be honest. Everything is constantly changing - we add something to the program, then we don't. I know there will be a few chips that we will show at some European concerts. Maybe something like this will work out in Russia. It is better to find out from our tour manager.

Brian Welch joining the tour?

Yeees. Absolutely right. We will bring it in anyway.

By the way, tell us about his return?

Once we met Head at a concert. At that time, he had not seen us for seven or even eight years. We hung out all day, chatted a lot, had fun ... then asked Brian if he would like to come on stage with us and play. He agreed.

Several months passed, I called him and asked: "Hey, listen, what do you think about taking us to the studio to record with us?" At first Head, of course, was not enthusiastic about the proposal. He refused. But then he thought a little and, as it seems to me, realized that he needed it. That the group is the very place to which he belongs.

Probably, Head just needed time to find out who he was, to find his own way, to grow in a sense. And then he felt that the moment had come to return. And he accepted our offer. In general, now Brian is with us, and everything is going well. I am very happy about that.

We, too! Listen, you and Head were both high school friends. Didn't they say a word to each other all eight years?

No! More precisely, somehow we may have communicated, but very little. Jonathan and I were touched by his departure the most: we felt this loss so sharply that we felt just abandoned. In general, I didn’t check his Facebook page, I didn’t follow him on Twitter. (laughs) I'm kidding, of course.

I can imagine how happy you were with his arrival.

Yes. Head very funny guy which always brings a lot of joy. It's very easy with him.

Does his religious beliefs somehow influence KoRn?

Not really. At least not me. You know, he now seems a little more focused, focused - which reflects well on the energy of the whole group. This, in my opinion, is cool. And in general, I think it doesn't matter at all which god you pray to. I absolutely don't give a damn about that.

Okay, now let's talk about you yourself. Monkey, I know you had own project- Fear and the Nervous System. Are you still doing it?

Yes. I have some ideas and I am going to release another album when the time comes.

It was a cool and fun project. I think that next time I will manage to make a disc faster than the last one. New job I would like to do it in the same line-up as before, but hopefully now we will have more coherent, "focused" material.

You are on a tour with Soulfly. Have you played with Max Cavalera before?

We've been fans of them for a long time. I know that Jonathan recorded a track from Sepultura - it came out on their album Roots. As for Soulfly itself ... I personally really like the Omen record, it's so heavy.

In general, we have known these guys for a long time. We worked together with Sepultura, Soulfy, Cavalera Conspiracy. They have known Max and Gloria for many years.

KoRn's first album turns 20 in October. This is a serious time! How will you celebrate?

Oh, that's a great question. We haven't really thought about it yet. But we will definitely do something. Maybe we'll give a concert, we'll play the whole album on it from beginning to end. True, I know that so many bands do ... let's see, in general.

Or maybe you should play all the albums? Do the longest concert in rock history.

Wow, all the albums - it won't be a concert, but a whole tour! In general, a cool idea.

Jonathan has given up both alcohol and drugs. What about you? Do you drink?

Not today!

Maybe tomorrow?

Well, you never know for sure what will happen tomorrow.

But celebrate the twentieth anniversary of KoRn with alcohol?

Maybe ... let's take twenty cans of beer, for example.

But without Jonathan.

Who knows? Maybe I'll make him drink twenty cans of beer.

Where do you like to perform more - at festivals or recitals?

These are very different things. The festival is a crowd, a huge mass of people in front of you. This is great. On the other hand, on solo albums, even small ones, the energy of the audience can be even cooler. After all, every person who came to your show really wants to be on it. They all yearn to see you.

And at festivals it usually happens like this: like, well, let's go see them, listen to a couple of songs, they say they are good on stage. In general, on little show the energy is more intense, concentrated.

By the way, KoRn performed at our Kubana festival a couple of years ago. Did you like it?

Kubana? The one on the beach? That was fucking awesome! We had a lot of fun then. The day before the show, we hung out all night until the sun rose. Then we slept until lunchtime. Amazing. It seems like that show opened our tour. I remember I was lying on the beach ... it was cool.

KoRn is considered the first nu-metal band. And Jonathan usually says he hates being called that: he thinks the band plays rock. And what do you think?

I think it's great that people, when they first heard KoRn, could not attribute us to any of the "traditional" directions. We didn't fit the description of an ordinary metal band, and we didn't fit into any category.

Now, looking back, I understand how cool this is. Although the term nu-metal itself (I don’t know who invented it there) sucks. For me, KoRn is a funk metal band. This is who we are. We've always tried to mix metal with others musical styles... Jonathan even had a DJ experience in the past ...

In general, the very term nu-metal is stupid. But after all, something had to be invented for us, right? And in itself it's cool - whatever our direction is called. It's just funk-metal for me.

Monkey, what has changed in you and the rest of the band during these twenty years at KoRn?

We've all grown up. Each of them had their own families and children. And we, I must say, are very happy that we managed to hold out together for so long - after all, not every band succeeds. I think children and families motivate us a lot and help us move forward. Now, naturally, we are thinking more about what will happen tomorrow. Before, we didn't give a damn about it.

In general, the composition of KoRn has not changed much for twenty years. Also Brian came back some time ago. It's hard to be friends all the time, not to allow major scandals, quarrels?

Of course. There are a lot of different relationships in the group: between the guitarist and the drummer, the drummer and the soloist, the soloist and the bassist ... about twenty such relationships in one single group. And they are all not perfect.

When people are regularly together in a confined space - on a tour bus, plane, airport - it's hard. Imagine: you're tired, hungry and all that. At such moments, you begin to see the people who are nearby in a completely new light.

There are different situations, and sometimes someone just doesn't have the patience. I think that's when some bands fall apart. But we, in spite of everything, seem to get along well with each other. I think it's even better now than before. Time has definitely turned out to be good for KoRn.

Korn was formed as a result of the breakup of L.A.P.D., in which the main vocalist suffered from drug addiction... The rest of the team members wanted to continue their careers and therefore created new group... The group began looking for a new vocalist. The new vocalist was found in one of the nightclubs when he performed with the Sexart group. Jonathan Davis (Jonathan Davis) immediately agreed to join the team. At this point, the group Creep was formed, which was later renamed Korn. The team immediately began working with producer Ross Robinson. They soon recorded a demo version of their first album, which included four tracks. Paul Pontius of Immortal / Epic Records heard Korn perform and immediately signed with the band on the spot. After that, work began on the first album.

The record was released on October 11, 1994. From that moment, the group began its tour of the cities of the United States. The tour took place without the support of radio and video channels. But this did not affect their performances in any way. Fans loved the live performances of their idols. Shoots and Ladders won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. The band played their first big tour as an opening act for Danzig and Marilyn Manson. On October 15, 1996, Korn recorded their second album at the same studio. The album was called Life Is Peachy. To promote this album, the group began performing together with the legendary Metallica collective. The Internet, which was just gaining momentum, was also used. And the Internet helped them. One hundred and six thousand copies of the album were sold. Due to this, the disc reached number three on the Billboard 200. The band's performance with Tool in 1997 also greatly influenced the band. This performance boosted Korn's popularity significantly. In late 1997, the band formed their own label Elementree Records. They signed contracts with bands such as Deadsy, Videodrone, Marz and Orgy.

Prior to the release of their third album, the group is launching their online TV show KornTV, which ran once a week. On this show, fans were able to track the recording of the album, as well as call and talk to the band members. By August 18, 1998, the band was recording and releasing their third album, Follow the Leader. Many celebrities of modern show business were invited to release the album, which allowed the album to quickly develop. Within a couple of months, this album took first place on the Billboard, this time the number of copies sold was 268 thousand. The cover for Follow the Leader was drawn by a comic-book artist. It was the famous Spawn, Greg Capullo. As a result, the band received two great awards for this album: Best Editing and Best Rock Video. It became the most commercial album in the world. In total, about ten million copies were sold. In the same year, the band opened their annual tour called the Family Values Tour. Korn. The fourth album, Issues, was released on November 16, 1999. Although it did not become such a successful album as the third, it started to hit the Billboard 200 at number one.

The album was celebrated with a live concert at the Apollo Theater in New York. This event was broadcast on many radio stations. The band's fifth album made fans wait almost two years. On June 11, 2002, the album Untouchables was released. It sold 434 thousand copies and this allowed the album to climb to number two on the Billboard 200. Legendary new metal band Korn from Bakersfield was formed in 1993 after the actual merger of the two bands, and in record time broke into the leading position. Their first album sold over three million copies worldwide. Some explain the success of "Korn" by the extraordinary vocal abilities and heartfelt performance of the group's vocalist D. Davis, who was invited from the "Sex Art" group, others - by an extraordinary cocktail of musical genres in the work of the group. Their music unites the incompatible: groove metal, hip-hop, franc, industrial and grunge. Perhaps there is something prophetic in the name of the group (translated from English - "grain") - after all, it is this group that is credited with the birth of a new musical direction- nude rock. Decades have passed, but every Korn concert proves that the music they create is popular and attracts thousands of fans looking to buy Korn tickets.
