Characteristics of the heroes based on the work of Dickens "David Copperfield". History of Uriah Heep, David Byron, Mick Box, Ken Hensley, Gary Thain, Lee Kerslake, John Wetton, Paul Newton, Trevor Bolder, Bernie Shaw

If the rules allowed good taste, then a dozen more exclamation marks should be added in the title. They - the very legendary, famous, stunning and influential, the most rock-solid British rock and roll again come to Israel for the sixth time and give a single concert on January 28 at the Tel Aviv Center for the Performing Arts.

Creativity Uriah Heep is rock! Hard rock, metal, progressive, art and jazz rock, already mythological acoustic folk rock. From the realm of myths and groups such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep purple... But they are no longer there, and Uriah Heep is one of the best British hard rock bands - a myth still valid despite more than four decades of stage career. Their music, their lyrics, stylistic experiments, ballads, their performance - but what is there to describe when you can still hear it live.

23 studio albums that have become classics of hard rock, 12 discs - live recordings, 13 collections - this is just the tip of the iceberg of Uriah Heep's popularity. In the 1970s alone, in the “golden” time for rock music, the group, whose debut album was released in 1970, sold over 30 million albums worldwide, making it one of the most successful rock bands. Back in the distant 70s, the covers of their discs with fabulous names were familiar to millions of rock lovers. On the early recordings, the undisputed leader was Ken Hensley, who is the author of most of the group's hits. By the way, he is a famous English poet. The voice of David Byron was unique. There were no more vocalists of this level in the history of rock.

The history of this group is confusing - the line-ups and vocalists changed many times - but each time it demonstrated a new, not yet known side of its work. In general, they do not lower the bar they set themselves. Founded in 1969, the musicians did not expect that, even after forty years, it would be difficult to get to their concerts and that they would become an object of research: four books about this group were published only in Russian.

Their hits are so popular that the names are becoming common nouns. So, for example, the famous song “July Morning” became the name of the summer music festival In Bulgaria. Already in the first line-up of the group, five vocalists met, which became its trademark, which has been maintained until now, the sign of their music - epic, dynamic, vibrant and diverse. Uriah Heep had their ups and downs, but they managed to survive all the troubles and retain a loyal following. In 1986, the “fresh blood” poured into Uriah Heep for the thousandth time finally worked. The musicians have not parted for over twenty-five years, and the 15th line-up in the history of the group turned out to be the most durable and durable. The magical characters of their songs (sages, witches, “rainbow” demons) and the general mystical atmosphere of the compositions created the image of a “fairytale” group for Uriah Heep, and many of their songs were included in the classic anthology of rock, as examples of rock from the 70s and 80s, and among them not only “July Morning”, but also “Lady in Black”, “Look at Yourself”, “Easy Living” - songs that the audience always sings along with.

Where did the self-name Uriah Heep come from? Well, what can serve as a source of inspiration for the British? Of course, Dickens. And, of course, one of his most unattractive characters is Uriah Gip (in Russian translation) from the novel “David Copperfield”. Everyone was talking about Dickens during Christmas 1969 in London - the hundredth anniversary of his death was celebrated. Apparently, the character of Uriya Gipa, Yuraya Hipa, at first perfectly matched the mood of young rockers, who in 43 years had managed to acquire fan clubs around the world, young and old fans who performed in prestigious halls and stadiums, who have repeatedly changed the composition of the group, but according to this day, beloved, popular and in demand.

At a concert in Israel on January 28 at the Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center, all the band's hits and songs from their latest album “Into the Wild” will be performed.
Mick Box - vocals, guitar
Trevor Bolder - vocals, bass
Bernie Shaw - vocals

Uriah heep

"Very` Eavy Very `Umble" (Very heavy, very modest) - this was the title of the band's debut disc, which was released on June 19, 1970. The musicians of "Uriah Heep" consider this date to be the birthday of the band. Over the almost 30-year history of the group, there has been a rather tangible "staff turnover" in its composition. More than twenty years ago, another bassist, Gary Thane, passed away. In 1985, vocalist David Byron, who left Uriah Heep in 1976, passed away. In 1980, keyboardist Ken Hensley left the band to pursue a solo career, and is now most often the promoter of St. Louis Music, which produces live amplifiers "Ampeg" and "Crate". But it was Gary, David and Ken who defined the classic sound of "Uriah Heep", remembered for such albums as "Look At Yourself" (1971), "Demons And Wizards" (1972), "The Magician's Birthday" (1972), " Sweet Freedom "(1973) and" Wonderworld "(1974). Among current participants only Mick Box has been playing in the group since its inception. Drummer Lee Kerslake has a slightly less "hip" experience. He joined Uriah Heep in November 1971 and has only spent about a year on the side since then with Ozzy Osbourne's team. For three quarters of the band's existence, Trevor Bolder is responsible for its bass guitar parts. And vocalist Bernie Shaw and keyboardist Phil Lanzon joined Uriah Heep in 1976.

It was then that the formation of the updated sound image of the team began. And soon she began to gain a "second wind". At the end of 1987, ten triumphant concerts of the group took place in the Moscow concert and sports complex "Olympic", with which she paved the way in Soviet Union for other western rock bands. Performances in the Land of the Soviets served the "hips" a good service. After all, according to Box, in native Britain, some at that time believed that "Uriah Heep" in full rest in the cemetery. The promoters vied with each other to invite the group on tour, and its performance at the 1988 Reading Festival was recognized as one of the best. There are also new Studio albums teams: "The Raging Silence" (1989), "Different World" (1991), "Sea Of Light" (1995) and "Sonic Origami" (1998). For the sake of fairness, it should be noted that the compositions included in them still do not carry the heat of creativity of the highest order, which was the difference between the hits of "Uriah Heep" of the first half of the 70s.

Now let's figure it out: why are they legendary and why they are "Uriah Heep". I want to say that there is nothing hip about `Hipah`, the name is borrowed from the literary classics, from the novel by Charles Dickens" David Copperfield ". Let me show you scholarship and quote: "He pointed at Yuraya. Pale, taken by surprise, he flashed his eyes with fury from some corner." Look at my tormentor, - continued Mr. Wickfield, - because of him I am little- gradually lost his name, reputation, peace and quiet, home and family hearth. Look at him, look - what kind of man he is! "End of the quote. In other words, Uraya, a literary character is a mean and calculating man. Dickens, this Dostoevsky of English life, with his hot pen burned in the national consciousness the image of a spineless scoundrel. a rock group is the best name - it immediately inspires confidence among all the poor students in the world!

A few words about the name of the Dickensian character. Hip is a surname. Just as Prince Hamlet became Hamlet and the city of Hastings became Hastings, Uriah Heep appears in the novel as Uriah Gip. Once Lomonosov called Newton Neuton. This I mean that in the translation of names - a tendency to how they sound, and not how they are spelled. Therefore, we with full syntactic right can call both the character and the group as they sound in their native English - `Yuraya Hip`. The name Yuraya is biblical, Old Testament. There is such a quote in the Bible: "And Uriah came to him and David questioned him ..." Well, and so on. It was fashionable in Victorian England to borrow the names of babies from the biblical writings. However, in Russia - too, remember all these Avvakums, Methuselahs and Absaloms. Having finished with the name, let's move on to the legend "Uriah Heep", which began to take shape exactly 30 years ago.

The history of "Uriah Heep" goes back to 1967, when in the English town of Watamstow 20-year-old guitarist Mick Box gathered his first band called "The Stalkers". When the "Stalkers" needed to find a new one to replace the departed singer, the drummer suggested the candidacy of his cousin, in our opinion, a cousin, David. David was on friendly terms with the musicians, they often drank beer together. He was friends, then he was friends, but he was afraid to go on stage. Mick Box eventually persuaded him: after a few mugs, plucking up the courage of the beer hall, David began to voice the rehearsed into the microphone and the fate of the new vocalist was decided. Metric surname David - Garrick, David Garrick. Somehow he did not like her, then he borrowed his sonorous pseudonym - Byron from the classic of the romantic era, the poet-aristocrat.

Boxing and Byron by that time felt confident enough and decided to take a fateful step: they turned from amateurs to professionals, in other words, quit their day job and completely switched to musician grubs. My new group they called "Spice" - you know: pepper, cinnamon, ginger. This is because there is an expression in English - when life is boring and monotonous, they say that spices must be added to it. They placed an ad in the newspaper saying that they were looking for a drummer, easy-going - unmarried, without a bride. From several candidates, one was chosen, his name was Alex Napier. I came to the rehearsal with a girl. "This," he says, "is my sister." Then, when they were already in the group, it turned out that she was not his sister, but his wife, well, it was too late. Bassist Paul Newman came from the band "The Gods".

The train was completed. So, what to play? The easiest way to please the audience is to play something familiar to everyone, most of the beginning bands usually do this. "The Spice", on the other hand, played little-known things, adding something from their own composition. At first, because of this, things went with a creak, their audience had to be conquered from concert to concert, until their own crowd was formed. The bassist's father, Paul Newman, was at first something of a manager - calling, closing concerts, organizing. By 1969, he had already managed to reach the level of London clubs such as "Marks", but for a high-quality throw forward, a different tractor was needed, for takeoff, a different fiery engine was required. Jerry Bron became such a man. Jerry was the manager and producer, the owner of the firm, who agreed to come and watch the band perform. He liked it, soon a contract was signed - at first only for the release of records. Then, having got to know the guys better, he decided to take on managerial responsibilities. Jerry Bron's firm was called Hit Records and had a working relationship with Philips Corporation, specifically with the Vertigo label. All four musicians drove to London to record at Lansdowne Studios.

It was the end of 1969, England celebrated the centenary of Dickens's death: memorial articles in newspapers, radio and television programs - then Jerry Bron suggested a new name for the group - "Uriah Heep", after the character from the novel "David Copperfield", spineless scoundrel and scoundrel. Another innovation was an increase in the composition, a keyboardist entered the group. “We've already recorded half of the first record,” recalls Mick Box, “and realized that we were missing something. him - a hovering guitar. Combined with the shrill, vibrating tenor of David Byron, we got the sound - what we need. " End of quote. At first, the keyboardist was simply called to record, and then bassist Paul Newman suggested his friend, Ken Hensley, with whom he once played in the band "The Gods". At that moment, Hensley was not playing keyboards, but guitar with a rather famous team called "Toe Fat", which translates as "Fat on the big toe." What Hensley heard at the rehearsal convinced him, he gave his consent.

"Come Away Melinda" - a composition from the first album "Uriah Heep", and it was called "Very Heavy ... Very Humble" or, how to pronounce it correctly "Very` eavy ... Very `umble" - the style was imitated in the title Dickens himself, who reproduced the London Cockney accent in the direct speech of his characters, and the Cockney letter `h` is usually not pronounced. The title I would translate as "Very heavy, but very modest." On this disc Hensley appeared late and participated in it only as an instrumentalist, his composing talents were destined to unfold on the following discs. During the recording of the first album, drummer Alex Napier left - the one who passed off his wife for his sister. Apparently, in the gypsy life of a rock musician there was no place for a family, he was replaced by Nigel Olsson, who actually worked with Elton John, but Elton had just finished recording his first disc and Nigel was free. The first album "Uriah Heep", "Very` eavy ... Very `umble", was released in June 1970, in America it was simply called "Uriah Heep". On the cover - a typical picture from horror movies: a ghoul with open mouth, the face is covered with cobwebs. David Byron posed as a ghoul, this is his face. He, in collaboration with Mick Box, wrote most songs that laid the foundation for the gold fund "Uriah Heep", who did not even suspect then - how many years they will then have to play and sing them in the cities and towns of the world

The English group "Uriah Hip" ("Uriah Gip" is a negative character in Dickens's novel "David Copperfield") was formed in 1969. Original line-up: Mick Box (guitar), Ken Hensley (keyboards, guitar), David Byron (vocals), Paul Newton (bass), Alex Napier (drums). In the first half of the 70s "Juraj Heep" were one of the most interesting hard-rock bands in Britain and were slightly inferior to the legendary "triumvirate" "Black Sabbath" - "Led Zeppelin" - "Deep Purple". The works of Ken Hensley (formerly he was the main composer of the group) were distinguished by a pronounced craving for lyrics, they were dominated by gentle sadness and some kind of unique combination of rock music and English folk ballads. The early works of the ensemble were rather complicatedly arranged and aroused respect even among fans of epic art (by the way, the covers of the early discs of "Juraj Heep" were designed by the same artist who worked with "Yes", Roger Dean). All products of the group up to 1976 were different high quality selection of musical material and virtuosity of performance. If the first disc "Juraj Hip" remained almost unnoticed against the background of the powerful octopus of the "triumvirate" groups, then starting with "Salisbury" the ensemble has become an international star, a real supergroup, which, moreover, was distinguished by a critical approach to political and social problems. The true masterpieces of hard rock were the same "Salisbury", "Look at yourself", "The birthday of the sorcerer", "Back to fantasy". Other programs of "Juraj Hip" of the early period were slightly inferior to them. The group was especially lucky with bass players, almost all of whom were invariably named among the most virtuoso bassists in rock. From 1972 to 1974, Gary Thain, who died in 1975, demonstrated miracles on bass guitar as part of "Juraj Heep". Thane was replaced by legendary bassist John Wetton, who made his name famous in many of the leading rock bands. The last strong album "Juraj Hip" (1975) was recorded with his participation. after which the group entered a period of crisis. Despite the fact that the ensemble continued to adhere to the style once chosen, its works in the second half of the 70s lost their former charm, the songs became simpler, and the arrangements were paler. At this time, the wonderful singer David Byron leaves the group to begin solo career ... By the way, not one of the members of "Juraj Hip" has managed to achieve success after parting with the group. This applies to both Byron (he died in oblivion in 1985), Trevor Bolder (he returned to the band - see lineup changes) and Kenn Hensley, who parted ways with rock music after releasing two uninteresting solo albums and sluggish activities. as part of the Blackfoot group, and only in 1989 joined the UOSP. In the "late" period of creativity of "Juraj Hip" its composition changed extremely often. As a result, now from the original line-up, only guitarist Mick Box remained in the group. The drummer Kerslake and the bassist Bolder also keep their cooperation with the group for more or less long time, the rest of the "positions" become vacant almost every year. From the group's work after 1975, some interest may have been generated by Firefly (1977), Conquest (1980), The Beast (1982), and especially the latest disc, The Angry Silence (1989). This is a strong program, but considering that The way to it took almost five years for the musicians, then there is no particular enthusiasm: many have already forgotten what "Juraj Hip" is. Other products of the "late" period of the group do not stand out in any way: they are frankly weak. In 1988, "Juraj Hip" toured the USSR, after which the concert collection "Sam in Moscow" (1988) was released in the West. The "Melodiya" company in the early 80s made a surprise to the fans of the group by releasing the album "Innocent Victim" under license. Uriah Heep (Juraj hip) - one of the most successful rock bands in England of the 70s, formed in 1969 in London, borrowing the name from the character of the novel by Charles Dickens "David Copperfield". The band's first line-up was formed when producer Jerry Brone invited keyboardist Ken Hensley (formerly of The Gods and Toe Fat) to join the Spice members.

Uriah Heep created their own original version of hard rock, saturating it with elements of prog, art, jazz rock. The trademark of their style (in the "golden years") were the spectacular backing vocals with complex multi-part harmonies and the dramatic vocals of David Byron. Uriah Heep's stylistic experiments were essential to the development of rock music; the group, in particular, largely anticipated Queen's similar experiments. One way or another, their music falls into such stylistic trends as progressive rock, hard rock, early heavy metal and sometimes even country.

The band's twelve albums were on the UK Albums Chart; greatest success here had Return to Fantasy (# 1, 1975). In the US, 15 albums were in the top ten of the Billboard 200. In addition, four Uriah Heep singles were included in the Billboard Hot 100. The group had significant success in the mid-1970s in Europe, Japan, and the United States, where the single "Lady in Black" became a hit. The albums released from 1971 to 1973 are considered undeniable classics of rock. Between 1970 and 1980, the group sold over 30 million albums worldwide. Uriah Heep's lineup has changed several times; a total of 22 people participated in the group, but the quintet is considered "classic": Mick Box, David Byron, Ken Hensley, Gary Thane and Lee Kerslake.

It is unfair that the band is underestimated by listeners, critics and heavy music lovers. This problem is a kind of fruit of a complex " life path»Groups where such harmful factors as: death of some members, drugs, alcohol and disagreements in the team are involved, from which the group started literally everything from the beginning for some time.

Celebration- (a compilation of the band's hits, played and recorded in a new way) was recorded in 2009.

Native Londoner and guitarist Mick Box (8/6/1947) suffered greatly from the fact that his band THE STALKERS was not successful. And this despite the fact that such an experienced vocalist as David Byron (January 29, 1947) sang in the group - he took part in the recording of anonymous cover albums, i.e. performed other people's hits under a false name Garrick (not Sukachev) and received money for food. This lasted from 1964 to 1966, until THE STALKERS were transformed into SPICE (sorry that not GIRLS ...). Boxing brought in a couple of new people - drummer Alex Napier and bassist-vocalist Paul Newton. This is where difficulties began, be careful - Newton came from groups THE GODS, which brought together a bunch of future superstars: two future "hips" Ken Hensley and Lee Kerslake, future THE ROLLING STONES guitarist Mick Taylor and bassist-vocalist Greg Lake, who replaced Newton and played later in KING CRIMSON and ELP. Well, is it complicated? But great! SPICE released their only single, "What About The Music / In Love," in December 1968, and the band was noticed by manager Jerry Bron, who insisted on a name change.

In 1970, two centennials were celebrated at once - the birthday of Lenin and the death of Dickens; it is clear to everyone which of these dates is more important for the British. All around were Dickens posters, films based on his books were shown in cinemas. Bron took his children to "David Copperfield" and was delighted with one of the characters - a small, cunning and disgusting Uriah Gip (as his name is traditionally translated into Russian, in fact, it is correct to pronounce "Uriah Heep"). After the session, Bron found his charges as quickly as possible and happily announced from the doorway: "From now on, you are URIAH HEEP!" "Never!" - the musicians barked unanimously. They were wrong. In December 1969, a keyboard player was added to the ranks of our heroes. It was Ken Hensley (08.24.1945) - a glorious man, besides the synthesizer and the piano, who also knew how to play the guitar and at the microphone. From THE GODS, he moved to the CLIFF BENNETT GROUP, which in July 1969 changed its name to TOE FAT (the leader of this group was one of the first white soulmen Cliff Bennett).

During the recording of URIAH HEEP's first album, the drummer left and was hastily replaced by Nigel "Ollie" Ollson, ex-THE SPENCER DAVIS GROUP. Well, the disc was called with a pretense - "Very`Eavy, Very`Umble", i.e. "Very loud - very quiet." "Very`Umble" is a favorite saying of Dickens's Uriah Gip. On the cover - a creepy face, covered with cobwebs. The work is mature, varied, presenting the classic sound of URIAH HEEP: vocal polyphony, "wah" of Box's guitars, romatic lyrics ... A hit for all time - powerful hard rock "Gypsy", the only song from the first disc in the current "live" repertoire of "hips" ... Hard leaders - LED ZEPPELIN, DEEP PURPLE and BLACK SABBATH - got nervous. Despite some borrowings, the “hips” managed to quickly develop their own style of hard-n-art, where there was a free place for hard riffs, and for organ solos, and for romantic piano, and for “twisted” compositions. If Plant suffered sexually in his blues, Gillan frenziedly yelled "Child In Time", and Ozzy raged like a wounded beast, then David Byron could let such romance, such quivering chivalry in his voice that he wanted to leave everything, jump on a horse and, crushing the unwary passers-by, rush through the night to the Lady of the Heart. In the early reviews, the music press criticized the album; Rolling Stone's Melissa Mills even promised suicide if "... this band becomes famous," calling the album's music "diluted Jethro Tull." Later, critics recognized him as an original combination of various musical ideas and influences, as well as undeniable importance for the development of hard rock and heavy metal. Martin Popoff, author of The Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal, puts Very ‘eavy… Very’ umble on a par with In Rock and Paranoid, specifying: “ Debut Album Uriah Heep is the weakest link in this trio of 70s metal albums that I believe laid the foundation for the genre ... The weakest because it's not overwhelmingly heavy; but it is included in the top three because it is in no way inferior in terms of innovation, saturated with ... fire-breathing guitar parts and an eerie gothic mood, which ultimately led aggressive rock away from blues and psychedelia into a completely new field. "

In the Salisbury album (1971), the group (according to Allmusic) abandoned the part of the experiments that burdened the Very ‘eavy… Very’ umble and took up the improvement own style, which combines the power of heavy metal and the complexities of progressive rock. The central feature of the disc was the art-rock suite of the same name, which occupied the entire second side, recorded with a 24-member symphony orchestra. Also critically acclaimed was "Lady in Black", one of the most popular songs of the entire concert repertoire of the group, in which the vocal part was performed by its author Ken Hensley.

The album Look At Yourself is uneven - against the backdrop of cool things like Look Af Yourself and Tears In My Eyes, Shadows Of Grief, Love Machine and What Should Be Done seem weak. The album's epic July Morning was (in the words of Ken Hensley) a symbol of the direction in which the band began to develop at that moment. Although, later he said that he wrote this song a year before the release of the album: “I wrote this song in the 70th year. That is, it was during a tour, in the middle of a tour in England, I was sitting on the bus, waiting for the others, they were running around everywhere, and I sat on the bus for a very long time. What was left to do? He took a guitar, began to play, and gradually the song came. And it really was a July morning, moreover, it was 3 o'clock in the morning ... "

For some time there was a small leapfrog with drummers in the group - Ollson was replaced by Keith Baker (February-October 1970), then there were Ian Clarke (October 1970 - November 1971) and Lee Kerslake (from November 1971). The fat and good-natured Kerslake, nicknamed "The Bear", became the main drummer of the team. There is also a mess with the bassists: simultaneously with the arrival of the Bear, Paul Newton fled from HEEP, who was replaced by Mark Clarke, ex-COLOSSEUM, and in February 1972, Gary Thane, ex-KEEF HARTLEY BAND.

A year later, Demons and Wizards was released, recorded in the spring at London's Lansdowne Studios. The singles from the album were released the songs "The Wizard" and "Easy Livin '": the second of them rose to 39th place in the USA, became a hit in Germany and New Zealand and, as Jerry Bron said, “helped the group to establish itself for the first time on the international scene ". The album cover was prepared by artist and designer Roger Dean. In October 1972, the album went gold in Britain (where it climbed to number 20 and stayed on the lists for 11 weeks), and later went platinum in the United States (No. 23 Billboard 200). The album also became a hit in Norway (No. 5), Finland (No. 1, 14 weeks) and Holland (No. 5). Much of the lyrics on the album ("Rainbow Demon", "The Wizard", "Traveler In Time", "Poet's Justice") are related to the fantasy genre, but Kirk Blues, author of the band's biography, noted that it is not conceptual; each track has its own significance here. Ken Hensley emphasized the same in the comments to the album on the cover: "This is ... just a collection of our songs, which we recorded with great pleasure." Hensley later called Demons and Wizards his favorite Uriah Heep album: “It was recorded in one breath. Those were the best times of a close-knit team and powerful music. "

In the autumn of the same year, The Magician’s Birthday, a fairy tale about the struggle between good and evil, was released (as stated in the comments on the album cover) based on a story by Ken Hensley. The first part tells about the journey to the Wizard's Castle. The second (Orchid Orchestra) is an unusual version of Happy Birthday To You (where the melodic counterpoint is provided by Lee Kerslake, kazoo). The third (instrumental) section illustrates the struggle between the forces of light and darkness: here we hear Mick's longest-running studio solo and Lee's furious drumming. In the fourth part vocal part David (he is assigned the role of a sorcerer) begins to convince us that evil triumphs. But the part of Ken (playing the role of the main character), opening the finale, heralds the triumph of love and its victory over evil. - Brief History of Uriah Heep. The Magician's Birthday. The album entered the charts in Norway, Australia (# 10), Great Britain (# 28), USA (# 31) and Finland (# 1, two weeks). On January 22, 1973, the album was certified gold in the United States.

By 1973, the group is trying to get out of the "fairy-tale" wilds, the songs are becoming simpler, more grounded. The album Sweet Freedom (September 1973) is a good example of this.
The disc climbed to # 18 in the UK, to # 33 in the US, to # 2 in Norway. On March 5, 1974, the album was certified gold in the United States. The album's lead single was "Stealin '" (# 91 on the Billboard Hot 100; Dreamer and "One Day" were also released in the US and Japan.

Wonderworld, released in June 1974, was the last album to be recorded by the classic lineup. “We became selfish,” Boxing recalls of that time. - They ceased to be a happy group, and this affected the albums. Everything began to fall apart: David was drunk all the time, Ken became tearful and mannered. It was a bad time. There was no joy at all. " It became quite sad in the group after Gary Thane was electrocuted at the concert. He was pumped out, but he had to refuse to work with "hips". Thane began to strenuously suppress the pain - both physical and mental - with white powder and on December 8, 1975, he ordered to live long.

The resourceful manager Jerry Bron brought in bassist John Wetton to URIAH HEEP for a certain amount of money, before that bassist in FAMILY, KING KRIMSON and ROXY MUSIC. The "classic period" of the 70s ended with the album "Return To Fantasy" (June 1975). It turned out to be the most successful commercially - 7th place in the British charts (in the States, "hip" discs were placed within the Top 50). Wetton gave his new colleagues a couple of good ideas, and the result is confident and smooth work.

The next disc, "High And Mighty", was released in 1976, according to Box, was "too experimental", the balance between hard rock and ballads was not kept. Wetton's influence grew every day, which was terribly disliked by Ken Hensley. In the meantime, David Byron just got drunk and lost his voice. “He needed to rest - to talk in a whisper for six months,” Wetton recalled. - But the group did not let him relax. The thirst for money drove them to the studio and on tour. " The apotheosis was the incident in Philadelphia in 1976, when a drunken Byron shouted to roaring fans: "If you don't like the show, you can get out of here." In June, David was unanimously removed from the group.

A replacement for Byron almost became ... David Coverdale from the collapsed DEEP PURPLE. But he did not want to get involved with the group rolling down, moreover, he himself wanted to lure Box and Kerslake into the future WHITESNAKE. Nobody moved anywhere, and the new vocalist of the "hips" was John Loughton from the German band LUCIFER`S FRIEND. The album "Firefly", like the previous ones, was almost entirely written by Ken Hensley (February 1977), with the new bassist Trevor "Bross" Bolder, who previously played for David Bowie, took part in the work. Starting with Firefly, URIAH HEEP has been pushing their fans with a beautiful wrapper without candy inside. And although all the concerts were still going "with a bang", the group has long given preference to material from 1970-73, and from the last albums they performed one or two songs. The new vocalist diligently imitated Byron, although he himself had a luxurious and energetic hard rock voice.

The next works - "Innocent Victim" (November 1977) and "Fallen Angel" (September 1978) turned out to be slightly weaker than the previous one. The band came to commercial hard 'n' heavy. The roster, due to scandalous reasons, was renewed by two-thirds again - Lawton was replaced by John Sloman from LONE STAR, and Kerslake had a falling out with the manager and went to Ozzy Osbourne to work on Blizzard Of Ozz. Chris Slade of Manfred Mann's band took the drums. These changes went to the team almost at a loss: the album "Conquest" (February 1980), already bears little resemblance to the early creations of the "hips", in contrast to the previous 3 albums, and in general did not contain more than one hit. As Hensley's imagination was completely exhausted, Trevor Boulder also took up songwriting and wrote the song "Fools". Self-critical. For almost a year, the "hips" toured without Hensley (he was replaced by Greg Dechert from PULSAR), and in April 1981 Mick Box was left in splendid isolation - Bolder moved to WISHBONE ASH, Slade - to Gary Newman, and Sloman - to another Gary, Muru. The story, alas, is typical for many old bands: the same thing happened with BLACK SABBATH and DEEP PURPLE (however, with some bands founded after 70, for example with SCORPIONS, AC / DC or KISS, the situation was different). It seemed that the fairy tale called URIAH HEEP had come to an end.

However, Box still had some gunpowder in his flasks. Singer Peter Golby from TPAPEZE, keyboardist John Sinclair from HEAVY METAL KIDS, bassist Bob Daisley from Ozzy Osbourne's band and ... Lee Kerslake from there were called up under the banner. The revival of the group caused a surge of interest in it, the album "Abominog" (March 1982) took 34th place in the charts. Again, as on the debut disc, there was a face on the cover of the disc, this time a devil with a frightening toothy mouth. Things seemed to go, Bolder returned to the team, and in this line-up two more albums were created, "Head First" (May 1983) and "Equator" (March 1985), which did not add anything good to the discography. By this time, URIAH HEEP had already lost contacts with major record companies, interrupted by tours in Indonesia, China and the USSR, once a year sang in front of the nostalgic British "Easy Livin" and became addicted to publishing "live". Due to the hopelessness of such a rock and roll life, Goldby and Sinclair left the group in the fall of 1985. Phil Lenzon, who had previously played in GRAND PRIX and even managed to work with SWEET, was hired as a keyboard player, and Steff Fontaine tried to become a singer, with whom the hips never recorded anything.

In the end, Mick Box invited the Canadian Bernie Shaw to audition - small, blond and very agile. Shaw moved to Britain in 1979, where he joined GRAND PRIX, and two years later joined former IRON MAIDEN drummer Clive Barr's PRAYING MANTIS (later renamed STRATUS). The band released an album in Japan and disbanded. When URIAH HEEP auditioned for "Stealin", all the musicians had one sheet with the lyrics, and everyone looked at it in turn. And Bernie Shaw defiantly turned away from the text and sang from memory. It turns out that in his homeland, Bernie performed in a group that performed only cover versions, among them, of course, were all Juraikhip's classics. All the "hips" were pleasantly surprised, and the always gloomy Bolder smiled and said: "You are suitable for us, boy."

So in September 1986 the composition was stabilized ... "Fresh blood" poured into URIAH HEEP for the thousandth time, finally worked. Firstly, the musicians have not parted for over 20 years, and the 15th line-up in the history of the group turned out to be the most durable and durable. Secondly, the albums "Paging Silence" (April 1989), "Different World" (February 1991) and "Sea Of Light" (May 1995) are head and shoulders above what the "hips" did during the last 15 years. The style of the group can be called "modern progressive hard rock" - without a hint of nostalgia for their own past and without much regard for musical fashion. Of course, this is not the mainstream, because this kind of music is sold poorly today, but the more respect you have for the "hips" who confidently do what they see fit. "Sea Of Light", designed more in the style of the YES group (by the way, in the early seventies the covers of both groups were designed by one artist, Roger Dean), testifies that "hips" have found a second wind, repeating old finds.
Then the equally powerful album Sonic Origami (1998) is released, and again acquires a large number of listeners, and the hit Between Two Worlds is comparable to the classic hits of those times. All this "this" continued until 2007. The team drives through "a lot of greenery" with old and better material.

In 2008, the album Wake The Sleeper was recorded, in the spirit of Uriah Heep of the Byron period, with new drummer Russell Gilbrook (Lee Kerslake left the band for health reasons). And in 2009, in honor of their 40th anniversary, the "hips" are planning to re-record their best mega-hits, this collection is called Celebration.

After quite successful albums and tours, the fact of the "burial" of the group was pondered from the outside - it would seem that everything will be enough, as long as possible. But it is not for Uriah Heep to give up ahead of the due and desired time, and by 2010, to the delight of fans, the group is preparing to record an album. Into The Wild is released in 2011, and this is not the end of the HARD ROCK story ...

URIAH HEEP
The English group "Juraj Heep" ("Uriah Heep" is a negative character in Dickens's novel "David Copperfield") was formed in 1969 year.
Initial composition:

Mick Boxing(guitar),

Ken Hensley(keyboards, guitar),

David Byron(vocals),

Paul Newton(bass),

Alex Napier(drums).

All products of the group up to 1976 of the year was distinguished by the high quality of the selection of musical material and the virtuosity of the performance. If the first disc "Juraj Hip" remained almost unnoticed against the background of the powerful octopus of the "triumvirate" groups, then starting with " Salisbury", the ensemble is becoming an international star, a real supergroup, which, moreover, was distinguished by a critical approach to political and social problems. The same became the true masterpieces of hard rock." Salisbury", "Look at yourself", "The sorcerer's birthday", "Back to fantasy"The other programs of" Juraj Hip "of the early period were slightly inferior to them. The group was especially lucky with bass players, almost all of whom were invariably called among the most virtuoso bassists in rock.

WITH 1972 on 1974 year miracles on bass guitar as part of "Juraj Hip" demonstrated Gary Thane who died in 1975 year. Thane was replaced by legendary bassist John Wetton, who made his name famous in many of the leading rock bands. With his participation, the last strong album "Juraj Hip" ( 1975 ). after which the group entered a period of crisis.

Despite the fact that the ensemble continued to adhere to the style once chosen, its works in the second half of the 70s lost their former charm, the songs became simpler, and the arrangements were paler. At this time, a wonderful singer leaves the group. David Byron to start a solo career. By the way, not one of the members of "Juraj Hip" has managed to achieve success after parting with the group. This applies to both Byron(he died in 1985 year in oblivion), and to Trevor Bolder(he returned to the group - see line-up changes) and to Kenna Hensley, who parted with rock music after the release of two uninteresting solo albums and sluggish activities as part of the Blackfoot group, and only in 1989 year joined the "UOSP".

In the "late" period of creativity of "Juraj Hip" its composition changed extremely often. As a result, now from the original line-up, only the guitarist remained in the group. Mick Boxing... For more or less a long time, the drummer also maintains cooperation with the group. Kerslake and bassist Bolder, the rest of the "positions" become vacant almost every year. From the work of the group after 1975 years may cause some interest " Firefly" (1977 ), "Conquest" (1980 ), "Monster(1982 ) and especially the last disc " Angry silence" (1989 ). This is a strong program, but considering that the way to it took almost five years for the musicians, there is no particular enthusiasm: many have already forgotten what "Juraj Hip" is. Other products of the "late" period of the group do not stand out in any way: they are frankly weak.

IN ^ 1988 year "Juraj Hip" toured the USSR, after which a concert collection was released in the West " Himself in Moscow" (1988 ). Firm "Melodiya" in the early 80s made a surprise to the fans of the group by releasing an album under a license " Innocent victim".
