Since slate paint has become popular in interior design, many homes can be found in various elements - from tablets to entire walls - on which you can write with chalk. In this post, we'll show you how to make a slate board a beautiful piece of decor, not just a place for notes and children's creativity.

Than to write

The answer to this question seems obvious - in chalk, of course! However, the manufacturers showed their imagination: in addition to chalk different sizes and colors there are chalk pencils, chalk markers and even chalk paints. The choice of instrumentation is very important for the final result.

Marker - Ideal for small lettering and thin, clean lines, but lettering without the characteristic chalk texture. It is more comfortable and pleasant to hold in your hands. If you buy one, keep in mind that not all markers are equally well erased - it is better to experiment on a less noticeable area.

You can make chalk paint with your own hands by rubbing an ordinary crayon on a fine grater and mixing the resulting powder with sanitary hand gel to the consistency of a syrup. The paint is indispensable for painting over stencils and large areas.

Plain crayons You can also make it more pleasant: a variety of crayon holders, which are now quite easy to find and buy, will not leave dryness on your fingers.

What to portray

On the slate surface, you can simply draw, improvise, write down your thoughts and recipes, or leave messages to your household. However, this kind of creativity may look sloppy and not serve the benefit of the interior. Often, cafes become the standard for the design of a slate wall - the walls in modern establishments are painted with beautiful fonts in different combinations and supplemented with drawings.

It is almost impossible for a person without special education and experience to make beautiful lettering on the board by hand without special education and experience, so just find a blank on the Internet or compose your composition from different fonts in your favorite graphic editor. How to transfer this artistic splendor to a wall or board, we will tell you further.

Method 1. Stencil

This method works best for large lettering or repeating items. The stencil can be printed on thick paper and cut by yourself, you can buy ready-made ones or order production in a printing house. The last two have the advantage of being reusable.

Use chalk paint or markers to stencil the image. The advantage of chalk over ordinary paint is that if it doesn't work the first time, it's okay, just wash off the area and redo it. You can also touch up the borders with a damp cotton swab.

Method 2. Carbon copy

This method is a little more difficult to implement, but it opens up more possibilities, because manufacturing a large number stencils are expensive. You will need a printed lettering or image, tape, graphite, pencil, and fine chalk or chalk marker.

The technology is as follows:

  • shade the back side of a sheet of paper with graphite (you can replace it with chalk, but it will stain the surface around more);
  • turn the sheet over and glue it with tape to the slate surface;
  • circle the image with a pencil, pressing hard;
  • peel off the sheet - the image outline will remain on the surface;
  • carefully circle and paint over it with chalk;
  • correct the sloppy areas with a wet cotton swab.

In Photoshop. Use the Crop Tool (C) to crop the image to get rid of the rounded corners and black background.

Go to the Levels adjustment (Image? Adjustments? Levels) and change the values as shown below. This will make the board surface darker.

Step 2

Load the Blokletters font into the shared library, go to the Window menu? Character and set up the font as shown below. Write "Back to School" on the chalkboard. The lettering should be in two layers. See the second screenshot below.

Step 3

Select the Brush Tool (B), open the brushes palette (Window? Brush) and adjust as shown below.

Step 4

Hide the text layers by clicking on the eye icon.

Right click on the text layer and select Create Work Path.

Pick the Direct Selection Tool, set the foreground color to white and create a new layer on top of the others. Name it "Chalk".

Right click on the path and select Stroke Path.

In the window that appears, select Brush. This means that the path will be stroked with the brush that we adjusted earlier.

As a result, you will see a chalk inscription. Press Enter to get rid of the outline. Keep in mind that the brush size may vary depending on the font size.

Step 5

To stroke each letter, create a path and select it with the Direct Selection Tool.

Before doing the stroke, set the foreground color in the toolbar. Do not press Enter until you have circled all the letters.

I used the following colors:

S - # f5989d

c - # fff799

h - # bd8cbf

o - # fdbd89

o - # 79bcde

Text written in chalk in paint.net

In this tutorial I will show you how to make chalk lettering in paint.net.

The idea of the lesson was borrowed from the English-language site, however, it has been slightly changed, since you can achieve the desired chalk lettering effect much easier and the result will be better. For inscriptions with chalk, we need a picture with a texture on which we will make this very inscription. For example, the following drawing of a blackboard will do:

Using the board as background, create a new transparent layer and write on it. The key drawback of the original lesson, they made the inscription thick, which made the sense of reality disappear. Those who studied at school and had experience with the chalk board know that it is very difficult to do beautiful inscription with letters as thick as three pieces of chalk. :-D I used the Script font for the inscription, which is available on almost all systems. However, all the parameters in the figure below:

Apply the standard paint.net effect "add noise" from the paint.net menu Effects - Noise to the layer labeled.

Apply the standard paint.net effect "Gaussian Blur" from the paint.net menu Effects - Blur to the layer labeled.

Create a copy of the layer with the resulting caption. Apply the standard paint.net "Dents" effect from the paint.net menu Effects - Distort to the top copy of the layer. In the figure below, the Scale parameter was set to 2. The rest of the parameters are default. The value for the "Scale" parameter can be higher, it all depends on the thickness of the text you are making.

Merge these two text layers.

Make a copy of the resulting text layer. Turn off the visibility of the layer on the top copy, we will need this layer later. For the other visible text layer, set the blending mode to "Add". Apply a Curves adjustment to this layer with the settings as shown below:

As you can see in the picture above, the inscription is already similar to the one made with chalk, only faint. Now you can turn on the visibility of the top copy of the layer with the caption. Set the blending mode of this layer to Screen Light. By adjusting the transparency of this layer, you can change the brightness of the inscription. For the picture below, the opacity of the layer was set to 180.

List online services providing the opportunity to draw on a virtual blackboard with crayons. After drawing, the picture can be saved, downloaded to your computer.

Let's start with the best I could find. Demo version of the web application - Drawing Board, there are three crayons for drawing (white, red, purple). The drawing process is accompanied by pleasant sounds of chalk hitting the board.

You can draw with chalk, or you can write something in print. The disadvantages include the small size of the board and the inability to adjust the thickness of the chalk. What you have drawn can be saved as a picture, for this enter your email address in the line above the upper left corner of the virtual board. Press the "Submit" button and a message with a picture will be sent to your mail.

The second service is My online blackboard - the size of the board is huge, almost the entire browser area. You can paint with all colors that exist in nature.

Use straight lines, squares, rectangles, or just freehand. Unlike the first service, the chalk thickness is regulated here. However, here I never found the button to download the image, all that remains is to take a screenshot using the "Prt Sc" key on the keyboard. And the lines themselves here are not like lines drawn with chalk, although perhaps it all depends on good drawing skills.

Chalk Text Effect is not exactly a board, just choose the font you like and the background in the form of green, black or any other chalk board and write the text.

The result is quite high quality, just like real photo... But the fonts do not support Russian letters, so it is suitable only for those who want to write something in English.

Here's an example of what kind of picture you can get.

And finally, a game in which you can also remember your childhood and draw with crayons - Chalkboard Paint. And then reproduce the whole process at high speed and see how you drew it.

I really couldn't download the picture, because didn't find such a function. But I do not exclude the possibility that it is there (I do not understand Chinese at all). A green board and six multi-colored crayons. Everything is accompanied by sound effects.
