"The best that has read recently was tweeting Hokang Holly. Twenty One Pilots: The long-awaited interview with Josh Dan

The American group Twenty One Pilots is one of the most high-profile new names in modern music. The video on their main hit Stressed OUT gathered on Youtube 700 million views, tickets to the Moscow concert in the Stadium hall were overlooked for half a year before the show. The price per ticket to the danceparter at the dealers reached 30 thousand rubles. Before the performance of "Lenta.ru" met with the members of the group Tyler Joseph and Josh Dan and discussed the popularity suddenly condicted on them.

"Lenta.ru": When you started, you probably thought about success. Now Twenty One Pilots is one of the most sought-after groups in the world. How do you like success? Whether he was as if you were before?

Tyler Joseph.: In all this a lot of things, what we just could not expect. Some aspects of popularity we could not imagine. But I and Josh - we always believed in our group. All about what we had been told with him - what we want, how would you like to become - everything happened. This is a very good feeling. Feeling confidence. The artist always doubts his art, and this doubt always accompanies the process of creativity. But when people appreciate what you are doing - it really helps.

And our daily life is now quite crazy: all these endless trips and so on. None of us went so much until we started to perform. See different countries - this is a commercial dream. In Russia, we are the first time, and, I must say, it was worth it.

What are unexpected consequences of popularity?

Josh Dan.: It is difficult to imagine what your usual daily life turns into. When we previously discussed our ideas and dreams, we only thought that we would play on the stage in front of a lot of people. It was the main thing. But from which life is before and after the performance on the stage - we somehow did not think about it. And we still learn how to live in this new situation for us. Here even take our conversation with you. I would never have thought that we can be in Russia and someone will be so interesting our group that we will ask about our lives there.

In the video for the song Lane Boy, two in the scene dance two in the chemical protection and with the inscription "Success" on the chest. Does it mean that, in your opinion, success is poison?

Etc.: I said that success can give confidence. This is his positive side. But there are many negative sides. There is a temptation to do something only for the sake of success and glory. When it goes to the fore, art suffers. We were convinced of our experience in the veracity of these words. Lane Boy is a song where we frankly spoke about writing, about pop culture, about the desire to get to the radio, become famous. We are this song as if they would protect themselves from this negative side of success. These two guys in the chemical protection symbolize it. In the final video, they fall on his knees in front of me - in such a way we show that we overcome all this.

There is also a line in this song: "I can do real only at concerts." What does it mean?

Etc.: Good question. I tried to say that I feel the most free in the creative sense in exactly the scene. At this moment, no one can indicate us what to do. Everything happens so quickly when you oppose people. On the one hand, this is a big nervous shock, the pressure, and on the other - complete freedom.

Concerts for us - the most important thing. Yes, we compose and write songs, but focus primarily on speeches. We write songs in order to play more concerts. In Lane Boy, we are talking about what kind of songs we want to compose. This song itself was born from longing for the freedom that I feel on the stage.

We pass through the phases: what is composed, is written in the studio, and we cannot wait for the day when we go to the tour to play it alive. But when he played in a tour, we think about new songs - such a cycle.

And how is the composition of songs?

Etc.: I try to write more texts separately from music so that they get more meaningful and saturated. When then connecting it with music, eventually comes out something completely unexpected. Now we are forced to compose on the road. This is now life now. Our last Blurryface album was entirely writing on the road. Concerts that we play, and our fans have a big impact on the music, because we often compose immediately after the speech.

Does outline on Laptop?

Etc.: Yes, there is a laptop with all my sounds, and when we are on the bus, we have a mini-studio. And the microphone is always with me. And there is always a phone to which I spoil and crucial ideas. I write down all sorts of interesting phrases and words, and they pull various images. Then it can do everything in the song.

When in a group of only two people - to play easier or harder?

DD: Probably, and so, and so. Sometimes it gives more freedom. We can rely on technology: among other things, they free our hands on stage. The show should entertain, pass people - and sometimes it is generally not connected with the playing game. We can afford more than just playing the tools. But on the other hand, be in our group more people, we could make the sound even more saturated. Yes, and fill the scene itself: because when you all two, you feel sometimes very vulnerable and too open. All the attention of the audience is concentrated only on you. But but it forces it to look really cool ( laugh).

Could you tell me more about this character - Blarifyses ("blurred face"), whose name is your album? Maybe someone will surprise your appearance on stage and in the clips with hands and necks painted black.

Etc.: I had a thought to make an album, which would be a story about someone. But I did not want it to be just some kind of real person. I wanted to plunge deeper into myself. There is something, on what I constantly work and with what constantly struggling is uncertainty. This is what I don't like yourself. I think in any person so. But I wanted to give this uncertainty the name, face, story. Something, what I can focus to try to understand, figure out. Brimalithis - a character personiform insecurity - whether it is a live concert or daily life. I am painting the neck black - so I show that bliffness, uncertainty, shake me. Black hands - a symbol of how uncertainty can paralyze creativity and in general everything you do. Someone will see a familiar situation in this and will try to defeat the bliffness. The album captured several such attempts. I liked to focus on something defined, writing a new album, instead of just burn a bunch of scattered songs. A certain thread stretches through the entire album. And this is what happens to us now. And we wonder what will happen next.

That is, the bliffness will still appear?

Etc..: Yes, because the history should have some kind of disagreement: everything continues everything is still or with this character is all finished. Or he turned into someone else, or there will be some new character. We do not know exactly, in which direction everything goes, but some ideas are already there.

What are your ideas about Russia before you arrived here?

D, D..: Seen photos of Moscow, understood that this is a city with a beautiful architecture. All Russians, whom I first met, were very cool. Feels, everything is completely different here than in the States. But this is great. We have already managed to see something from you, very cool. And you know, this crowd in front of the entrance to the club, people who came here for a few hours to look at the group that has never seen - it is awesome.

Etc.: Those who come long before the show are the most devoted fans. And it is they who make our concerts as cool.

Josh Dan is the drummer of Twenty One Pilots. While many are trying to expand their departments of their hobbies and engage in several things at once, Josh has been improved exclusively in the game on the drums and reached the greatest professionalism in this matter.

Josh was born on June 18, 1988, in one year with Tyler Joseph, in Columbus (Ohio, USA), he has two sisters and brother. Tyler, contrary to the rumors that appear on the Internet, not his brother 🙂

Josh grew up in a religious family (by the way, like Tyler), which did not prevent him from doing music. Parents have always supported the passion of the Son and even highlighted him a room in the basement under the musical studio, where Josh squatted for hours, loying on his drums.

Josh has no musical education and everything that he learned, he achieved independently, using the rollers of other musicians, found on the Internet. There was a time when he did not even have his own drum plant and he went to train at the nearest music store.

Josh's aggressive game on the drums threatened him to spread on the drum bears and then Zildjian, which produces musical equipment suggested that he was made by an individual order reinforced (and slightly elongated) drumsticks. Later, the model was launched into mass production.

In Russian-speaking Tusovka, Josh received the nickname "Kazakh", with a light hand of one online user who wrote a message in the style of "Help to identify the clip", where the main characters of the video "Boy with a dirty neck" and "Kazakh" 🙂 after that ...

At all concerts, Josh performs its crown number - flip back with the piano. Permanent visitors to the speeches of the group so they are accustomed to this that everyone is already waiting for this number and Josh is not to choose ...

Josh is confessed in natural modesty and this explains that the first time performed at concerts in a variety of masks (including Balaclava). Later he managed to partially defeat this shyness and, at the moment, only red eyes and bright chapels remained from the previous costume.

At concerts, in addition to Salto, Josh has another corona number - crowdserving with drummed installation. Those who have seen say that the spectacle is outstanding.

Tyler and Josh periodically troll about homosexual preferences. The guys show the utterly indifference to these hints, and sometimes they begin to pinch and pour oils themselves into the fire. What you can't do to give the public scratching languages \u200b\u200b...

Hi, Josh! Some of these issues may seem strange, but know: we have no complaints, these are fans tried ! First of all, tell me what your expectations from Russia do you have? You probably think that we still have a perestroika and bears along the streets?

Haha, yes no .. I have never been to Russia. This will be my first visit to you in Twenty One Pilots. But from the seventh grade I dreamed of visiting your country. Therefore, I am very excited that I will finally manage to come and feel like a part of the Great Culture. Of course, I can not imagine what to expect from you. But I would not want to rely only on someone's jokes, bikes and video - it is important for me to get your own experience. It is impossible to understand someone else's culture, while you yourself are not visiting this country. So I really look forward to the ride and want to find any, meet cool people ... In general, I am ready for adventure!

What rumors or myths about Russia do you first come to mind? For example, about vodka ...

I'm trying right now to remember anything, but nothing is remembered. But I met a lot of Russians, they were all very kind. So I think I will get acquainted with you with a bunch of good people.

And whose was the idea - to come to Russia? Does your manager or decided to visit such a dangerous place? Maybe adrenaline wanted?

Hehe! When Tyler and Tyler with music, we traveled a lot to the native state of Ohio, where they were born and grew. But once we agreed that when we all succeed, we will definitely begin to travel with a big scope. So it came out, we began to richly rude in the world and now we want to visit as much cool places as possible! And to the conversation about what Russia will be: I think she will be amazing!

What do you do first, when will you get out of the plane in Moscow?

First of all, I, perhaps, will find your best coffee and be abundantly refilled to be a flaw. I love coffee, you know.

We approve! What do you know about Russian music? Listen to any of our performers?

Good question. I am sure that someone accurately heard, but now I will not remember. Maybe you will advise anything?

No problem! At "" just there is a tradition: when the famous performers come to Moscow, we show them the best Russian clips. If you are not against, we will invite you to this transmission and you will most closely meet Russian music.

Yeah, cool!

Well, we will contact your manager and try to organize a meeting. What kind of music has listened to himself lately?

Hmmm ... Yes, I don't know what I listened for the last year ... Sometimes I turn on old plates - those groups from which the ballad in high school. I recently chased Rage Against The Machine and. Sometimes I can listen to Opera, even Pop. Green Day type. Or just relaxing music, without words. In general, I listen much.

To the conversation about the words. Do you remember the texts of all your songs by heart?

If I remembered all our songs, I would have been complicated. By heart, of course, no. But I am preparing for the show.

Which drummers consider to be their idol?

A lot of those. A bunch of professionals helped me to master the drums while I did not find my style.

Twenty One Pilots (the group name is always written by the line) raised a lot of noise over the past few years with their experiments over musical style and remarkable alive performances.

Debuting in 2009 and subscribing to the label Fueled by Ramen in the 2012 Group, consisting of the vocalist Tyler Joseph and the drummer Josh Dana, released two heat taken by the critics of the album: "Vessel" and "BlurryFace". The latter became their business card. Their lyric, unleashed texts found a response among the many fans around the world.

The nearest Twenty One Pilots concerts in Russia will be held on February 2, 2019 in Moscow (VTB Arena) and February 4 in St. Petersburg (Ice Palace).

TWENTY ONE PILOTS Name Taken from Arthur Miller's Piesen

In college Tyler Joseph studied Miller's play "All my sons" about a person who becomes a moral choice after deliberately sells spare parts for aircraft for the Air Force, with the result that during the Second World War, twenty-one pilot die during World War II. Inspired by this moral dilemma, Joseph calls a twenty-one pilot group. It is such ethical issues and situations from life that became the basis for many songs of the group.

Musicians placed photos of their grandfathers on the cover "Vessel"

Two elderly people on the cover of the debut release on the label Fueled by Ramen are grandfathers of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dana. Joseph and Dan decided that it would be cool, because no one did it before.

Their ski masks symbolize the chance

After the release of the album "Vessel" Twenty One Pilots began to wear balacls during live performances, and on MTV Movie Awards in 2013, they even followed the audience. In an interview, the group stated that ski masks - a way not only to catch people by surprise at concerts, but also to make music more faceless and thereby easily - to separate it from faces and names so that people could make her own.

BlurryFace is a character in honor of which the album was named

Tyler Joseph told that BlurryFace is a character invented by him, personifying his own complexes and complexes of other people. To enter the role on the stage, he struck black paint on her neck and hands, which, according to him, symbolizes the fear of suffocation (paint on the neck) and the thing he makes them with their own hands (paint in the hands). It also carries red swelling, because the red is the color of this character.

They tried to attract the attention of the employees of the scene during concerts

When Twenty One Pilots was just a place in Columbus, they tried to attract the attention of all those present in the club, even bartenders who served visitors. In an interview, Tyler said that they were striving for even the service personnel at least for a second interrupted their classes and looked at the scene.

They are christians, but not Christian performers

And Tyler Joseph, and Josh Dan said they were Christians, but they are not going to convince anyone in anything with the help of music. However, since their beliefs are important for them, they somehow often slip in texts and general symbolism.

Tyler somehow came the visitor from the concert

Once Tyler Joseph stopped the show, because he saw the guy in the hall hit the girl. He stopped playing and with several other people pushed him off the site.

Twenty One Pilots will not say what their logo means

Tyler Joseph drew the logo of the group himself, and calls it "Kitchen Drug". He stated that it had a certain meaning for him, as well as he was the only person who knows what it symbolizes. And if he tells, then the meaning will be lost.

None of the group members play guitar

Twenty One Pilots usually cope with synthesizers, ukulele and drums, which makes their music quite peculiar because they do not use the guitar at all. This is because neither Joseph nor do it play it. They say that if they used the guitar, I would have to look for someone who would play on it, and then the music would pass through someone who is not part of the group.

Josh played the drums in House of Heroes

Before joining Tyler Joseau in Twenty One Pilots, Josh Dan was a touring drummer in the Rock group House of Heroes. After the participants in the original composition of Nick Thomas and Chris Salin left the team, Dan, who worked at Guitar Center with Salin, met Joseph and they began to play together.

Tyler Joseph released a solo album

Student school, Tyler Joseph released a mini-album of christmas songs. He also appeared on a live speech "Oh Come, Oh Come, Emmanuel" in the Christmas program with the stars for the Five14 church and in the role of back vocalist on Single Dallon Woods (Panic! At the Disco) "Sickly Sweet Holidays".

Also Tyler starred in videos for her church

Before Twenty One Pilots became famous for the whole world, Tyler Joseph shone acting talents in short videos, which he did and a few more people from his church in Ohio. In the video called "The (Moderately Inspiring Tale of The) Longboard Rodeo Tango" he plays an intern who finds out that his comrades are a gang of skateboarders.

The album "Vessel" was written without much expectations that someone hears him

When the album "Vestel" came out, the group was still quite a little known, so when they went to the studio to record, no one waited for them. However, the group said that when they recorded "BlurryFace" difficult to not think about the fact that somewhere there is an audience that thirsting this record.

They removed the video on Will Smith's Care

In one of its most interesting video on "House of Gold", the group appears in front of the audience in the middle of some empty and their half of the body is broken off. But the place itself is also of interest. The clip is removed on the ranch north of Los Angeles, which belongs to Will Smith.

Once they were whipped with a tattoo right on stage

And the Tyler and Josh have a tattoo in the form of the letter "X", which they were blocked right on stage in Columbus. Joseph is at the forearm, and it is given behind the right ear, and symbolizes the devotion of fans in their hometown.

The world's world success from Ohio Twenty One Pilots puzzled everyone, including it seems to be his participants. Thaler Joseph and Josh Dan degraded with tattooes and black paint, as if those who came out of the posters from the Bravo magazine of the 2005 sample, quietly produced the albums and slowly increased their "click of skeletons" (so they call them fans themselves). As suddenly, their sarafined hit "Stressed Out" rang on all radio stations of the planet, and the song "Heathens" was in the soundtrack of a loud summer blockbuster "Self-suicide detachment". In general, now it is they who belong to the hearts of adolescents, hungry on beautifully reflexing cumin with tunnels in the ears.

The program writing Twenty One Pilots, Track "Stressed Out", was released in April last year. But the hype around him began with the intake for about six months. Since then, he has been viewed more than 650 million times.

On tour in Russia

In general, the Tyler with Tyler has long dreamed of arriving at you. We know a lot of cool Russians, we are waiting for something unforgettable. In turn, I promise to beat the drums with all my might!

On the handshake from the clip "Stressed Out"

We came up with five years ago. They sat at the hotel room at four in the morning, could not sleep and then such: "And let's come up with a secret handshake? It must have all the best friends, right? " Since then, every time you greet. After the clip, however, this is no longer a secret. But I will not teach anyone: let's come up with your option with your best friend.

About the film "Squares suicides", the main topic of which was the track "Heathens"

Listen, well, in person personally, the film is entertained, and this is the main thing. I generally love movies about superhero. And I never come to them overly critically: it's just the opportunity to disconnect from reality for a couple of hours and relax.

About supercans

I would like to be able to run very quickly. At least 50 miles per hour.

About reading

The best that I have read recently was tweet Holca Hogan: "Kevin Owens and Hey.J.Stiles, remember: To the WWE, everyone demolished the tower, you need to disrupt from Eric Yanga pants and leave it in some" Spiddle "(the American is listed RESTLERS. - Approx. ed.).

About fear and uncertainty

The more adult becomes, the more you start to worry. Anxiety grows over the years - my doctor once compared it with an eruption of a volcano. In general, the main problem is that often in principle it is difficult to understand, because of what exactly you are experiencing. For me, the music has always been the best antidepressant and replaced psychotherapy. I am sure that I am far from one.

About the most fun colleagues

We toured with a lot of artists - from Fall Out Boy to Echosmith. Who is more fun? Last summer, I celebrated my birthday in New Hampshire with Mutemath and Chef'special Group. So I ate pudding from "Oreo" and drove it with a cake from Oreo - and it was probably my wild birthday in life.

How to maintain healthy relationships in the team, where only two participants

What do we do if you quarrel? Honestly, we just don't quarrel at all. It is important that we were already good friends when they started playing together. We respect each other each other, which is very important when you spend so much time together.

On October 22 and 23, Twenty One Pilots will perform in Russia for the first time. Tickets for a Moscow concert at the Sokol club (former Stadium Live) are long sold out, in St. Petersburg, the organizers moved a performance to a more spacious "Ice".
