Why is the historical context and his understanding for Canadian art? The historical features of the formation of Canadian mentality were expressed in the art by repetition of a certain cycle of topics. First of all, the topic of searching for Canadian identity is distinguished - and this is a burning question for any multicultural country, not only Canada. The theme of the isolation and privacy and their influence on the identity in society also attracts the attention of artists.
This question has several sides - it is enough to remember that from the point of view of borders, the most inhabitable part of Canada borders only with the United States; And from the point of view of the population density, in Canada, with the exception of its southern border part and coast, there are territories with a single density, with very rare settlements. You can also add the life of the Indians in reservations, which also carries the shade of insolation.

Thematic cycles

With these already themes, the issues of the interaction of several cultural layers are also associated, namely:

 • contacts of immigrants and the indigenous Canadian population, the development of their relationship;
 • contradictions and historically tense moments of relations between Franco and English-speaking Canada.

And no less significant for art than previous topics is the topic of Canadian landscape, climatic conditions and picturesque landscapes, which is reflected first of all in art visual.

First acquaintance with art

Throughout the Canadian Way of Development, held at first in the light of the British influence on the colony, and later in the close neighborhood with the United States, the search for an answer to the question of what distinguishes Canadians from their allies and neighbors. The art of Canada began as a derivative of European art. What is this continuity noticeable?

At the beginning of the XIX century, the British roots of the early architecture of Canada are still clearly traced. A wonderful example confirming this obvious thought remains the Anglican Cathedral of the architects of William Hall and William Rava - the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Quebec (it was built in 1830 and became the first Anglican Cathedral outside the British Islands). His prototype was the church of St. Martin (London, Trafalgar Square).

European romanticism had one of the first influences on Canadian painting. Joseph Leghera's work and artists of his period, portrait and landscape painting Canada, retain romantic traits. In the work of the first Canadian painters - P.Kain, F. Bern - the influence of the barbizon school (France) affected.

From the soft features of European romanticism and expressionism, Canadian painting begins in the XX century. Pioneers on this path were artists known as the "group of seven". The image of the harsh Canadian landscapes of this painter group laid the beginning of a new style. Against the background of the wild untouched nature, the contrast was distinguished by a fragile subject, most often any plant.

Group of seven and others

The very first, widely recognized, the traditional movement in the art of Canada became a group of seven. She was founded Tomson (although he died before the group was officially formed). The artists-men entered it:

 1. Franklin Carmichael (Franklin Carmichael)
 2. Lauren Harris (Lawren Harris)
 3. A.Ya.Jackson (Y. Jackson)
 4. Franz Johnston (Franz Johnston)
 5. Arthur Lismer (Arthur Lismer)
 6. J.E.G. McDonald (J.E.h. MacDonald)
 7. Frederick Varley (Frederick Varley)

In the visual focus of the prolific artists-landscape players were extensive landscapes. They skillfully passed the beauty of wildlife with its severity and contrasts, leaving for the forefront of the paintings. In the 1930s, a company of Canadian artists, followers of a group of seven were created. The work of the Company is associated with the work of the Canadian artist Emily Carr, the first woman who received national recognition.

Lauren Harris, departing from the landscape painting of the group, directed his work in the direction of abstract art. Harold Town and Jean-Paul Riopelle (Jean-Paul Riopelle) are famous abstraction artists who entered the eleven art group.

Woodland, Style-Heir's Herizer

The best samples of Canadian crafts - visual crafts and sculptures - take their origin in indigenous culture, Indian and Inito. Unfortunately, most of the art of indigenous peoples remains beyond the face of broad fame and recognition. Nevertheless, the art of indigenous people of Canada is rich in creative ideas and their embodiments in shape and constitutes a meaningful part of the General Student Culture and Art.

Norwal Morrisso, whose Indian Name Copper Thunder Bird, is a talented artist who had an invaluable impact on the development of authentic art. Being Shaman Okibva, Mr. Morrisso became the first artist, on the canvases of which the modernist style and traditional Indian imagery merged. His style is known today as "Woodland", painting legends. The revival of the ancient Indian engravings performed on Bereste, motifs similar to the image on X-rays, binding lines between animals and people are characteristic features of Norval Morrisso paintings.

The ability to synthesize the traditions of tribal peoples and the features of European and American traditions into a single whole has become an important face in the formation of the National Spirit of this Canadian art.

Before the beginning of the 20th century, Canadian art was closely connected with European. Canadian artists trained traditional art and technicians who were used by ancient masters and modern artists who lived on the side of the Atlantic Ocean. However, this did not prevent the positive response that artists received, sought to reflect the special character of this huge country and its inhabitants.

Cornelius Krighoff (1815-1872), originally from Germany, achieved perfection in the landscape genre. He did numerous sketches of the picturesque places of Quebec, especially snow landscapes. His style of many reminded the style of Dutch landscape players. Contemporary Krighoff, Paul Kane, was born in Ireland in 1810. He traveled through Prairie and Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean with the Fur Merchants. On the way, he painted everything that saw (for example, the last hunt for bison). His paintings, quite in the spirit of time, reflect the life of the West, which was on the verge of change. At the end of the XIX century, Quebec artists were influenced by French Impressionists, whose technique was used in the image of rural and urban landscapes of Eastern Canada. Landscapes of Montreal Maurice Cullen (1866-934), apparently, had a great influence on the perception by the inhabitants of their city. The same can be said about Quebec's landscapes of James Wilson Morris (1865-1924).

Later generation of artists settled in Toronto. They created an art school, which not only reflected the Canadian landscape, but also emphasized the identity of this country. These artists began to be called "Group of seven". The roots of this artistic association go in 1911, when the painting "On the edge of the maple forest" of the artist from Montreal A. I. Jackson took place in Toronto. The bright color and the special texture of his paintings were struck by local artists. According to their advice, Jackson moved to Toronto. Here he shot the studio along with other artists, fans of his talent. Jackson made friends with tomson's self-taught Tomson. Thomson grew up in the village, he knew how to fish, engaged in canoeing and shot a gun. Tomson's rude style later became more sophisticated under the influence of Jackson and other artists who admired his bold technician.

The rich patron of artists Dr. James McCalum gave them his summer residence in the area of Gajaian Bay Bay. McCalum, together with the wealthy artist Lawrene Harris, who patronized the engineering firm Massa Harris, also provided artists the famous building of the studio, from which the view of the Rowelee Gorge in Toronto was opened. Thomson lived secluded in a small lacker near the studio. There the artist worked on creating his most beautiful paintings on the oil sketches, which he did in nature. Among these paintings were the most beloved among Canadians - "West Wind" and "Pine Banks". Thomson drowned in 1917. His death was a shock for his friends. Nevertheless, in 1920, they founded the "Seven Group". In addition to Jackson and Harris, it included Frederick Varley, Frank Johnston, Arthur Liser, Franklin Karmichitel and J. I. X. McDonald. In his paintings, they portrayed the wild nature of the Canadian shield in the same energetic manner that was characteristic of Thomson. Varley succeeded in portrait art. Karmichitel portrayed not only natural landscapes, but also countryside, as well as mining villages. Harris created the landscapes of the North in the primitivistic style, and later switched to abstractionism.

My early childhood in the International Missionary Papua New Guinean camp also imposed a large imprint on anthropological interest that I have to culture, and especially the endangered native cultures around the world. Since I was a child, I was very interested in the first peoples of North America. I spent several years, teaching art and music in an isolated reservation of Ojibv, and this was the fertile soil for my expanding study.

The technological sphere is developing very quickly, attracting many developers, designers and multipliers. They all express creativity in their own unique style. This is another reason why I love to be where I am. Technology and art merge here, and I think that we will begin to see the mergers of interesting projects.

One example of modern painting is undoubtedly the works of the Canadian artist Jonathan Earl Bowser (Jonathon Earl Bowser). The artist was born in 1962. In Canada. Talent for painting manifested itself in early childhood. So, for the first time, his sketches appeared already in 8 years. Earl Barew - Alberta College of Art (Alberta College of Art) in Calgary, graduate 1984. After five years in a commercial illustration, which helped acquire it technical abilities in graphics and painting, he began to work independently, making a new vision into modern art. At the moment, the Bauzer works in the original manner, which the mythical naturalism itself called. His paintings are bizarre landscape landscapes, intertwined with the pictures of amazing women angels. Often, he represents his girls in the flesh - naive, passionate, tender, and sometimes vicious, they just attract the views of the audience

"The task of the artist, try to see the world as it is, and not as it seems to people who rely on their unreliable feelings. The artist must cling to the mysterious poetry from which the world is made, always hoping, find a rare and fleeting look at the truth for a veil of illusion that affects our thoughts and perception of the world. This unknown mythically-poetic foundation of the world consists of two fundamental aspects: the first - tangible, changing the dynamic processes of space - a male beginning; Other - intangible, cautiously sitting inside into eternal peace of mind, that in his infinite perfection, never changes - the feminine start. It is the second aspect, I sing in my work - the mystery of the cosmos and the mystery of the woman. "

And in fact, the works of the Bowser are written in a very peculiar manner of the so-called "fantasy", which makes his work very popular among fans of this genre. Bowser works with traditional materials - canvas and oil, which is surprisingly combined with the direction of work. His paintings can be found in private collections worldwide - from Europe to Asia. Even the Government of China and Taiwan purchased a series of his works for their collections. Among the picturesque works there are a series of unique painted plates located in various famous galleries in the world. His series of 4 paintings "Earth of Indigenous Americans" and "Mother of the Sky" was published and became famous worldwide.

The creativity of the Bauzer should be approached from a philosophical point of view, perceiving his vision of the world as a kind of matrix. The images created by the master is a kind of search of lyrical poetry, which is a light floe envelops our world. His paintings are the real works of contemporary art for which, undoubtedly, it is worth paying attention to all lovers of modern painting.

Jonathan Earl Bowzer is the author of over 130 original paintings and drawings, which are stored in 13 art galleries in the world: in America, Europe and some Asian countries. In all the paintings of the artist, the goddess of nature always acts as the main acting person.

Famous artists of Canada - who represents the country to world art scene?

June 29, 2017 - Our first edition we decided to devote to the famous artists of Canada, which brought a fresh look into the national art and a new wave of inspiration. We will go on a little journey through the canvas and copyright views on the world around us. From the legendary landscape players and fearless battleists to contemporary art with the original contribution to abstractionism - all these famous artists who were working in Canada.

Tom Thomson.

Tom Thomas John Thomson is one of the key figures in the world of Canadian art. Especially when it comes to the stunning landscapes of the typical natural beauty of Canada. He served as true inspiration for those who later created the so-called "group of seven", which included the most influential artists of those times. And his paintings "The West Wind" and "Jack Pine" are considered the legends of Canadian art.

Thomson was born on August 5, 1877 in Clermont (Ontario) in a rather creative family. He was the sixth of ten children. The vocation of his father and his cousin, who was one of the best biologists and natural sciences of his time was greatly influenced by him in childhood. It is for the time spent with them, Thomson learned to surprisingly combine the observation of nature and the representation of the true spirit of mysteriousness inherent in Canadian landscapes. Despite such creative childhood, Thomson entered the business College of Canada, and then visited such an educational institution in Seattle. In the same place, he settled on his first job in a commercial ART company engaged in engraving various formats. However, the unsuccessful attempt of marriage forced him to move to Toronto, where he decided to become an artist.

Up to this point, all his artistic activities were only amateur. Everything changed when he signed up in the evening school of arts, where he began to actively communicate with the company known to the art world called Grip Limited. Showing your work by local professionals, Thomson received a laudatory reviews. During each of his tourist or fishing units, the artist constantly made sketches, which then turned into real masterpieces in the studio. Such a scheme of work has become familiar to him, and it was she who allowed him to create his most famous paintings. His look at the incredible beauty of the Canadian nature became truly legendary.

Tom Thomson died in 1917 in the mysterious circumstances, which some called the murder and vinyl in this Shannon Fraser. However, there is no accurate evidence to this, so his death is officially considered an accident.

Jean Paul Riopelle

Jean Paul Ropehel(Jean-Paul Riopelle) is one of the first Canadian artists who received worldwide recognition. Also was one of those who signed the famous document "Refus Global", opposing all social, artistic and psychological mains Quebec of the time, against all the painting technicians at that time.

Being the Son of the Builder, Ropehel began to attend drawing lessons at 13th. The teacher instilled him the idea of copying nature in his works, and this base has become a real problem for a young artist when he continued his studies in the higher educational institution. Despite the desire of the parents to learn the Son on the architect, Ropel followed the call of the heart. At first, he had serious conflicts with the new teacher, since he did not recognize the realism of the paintings of the student. Over time, Ropel has opened new parties in himself and allowed the subconscious to enter the fore during the work on the paintings. So he began writing in the style of automatism, which denied the need for a conscious approach to drawing and considered the true art of only work created by subconscious solutions. After some time, Ropel began to compare with Great Jackson Pollock.

In the 1950s, Ropel developed his currently recognizable style by creating a famous picture "Blue Night". Having moved to Paris, the artist participated in numerous prestigious exhibitions, worked, created new masterpieces, and then met Joan Mitchell, the relationship with which was launched as much as 25 years.

In 1962, Ropel represented Canada on Venice Biennale and received a big retrospective in the Paris Musée National D'Art. Today, his work is presented in the National Gallery of Canada, in New York, Washington and many other major cities and galleries. In 1989, the artist returned to Canada, where he began working in a new style, which did not all manage to understand. However, his picture "Hommage à rosa luxemburg", written shortly after the death of Joan Mitchell, again raised him to the top of recognition. Ropehel died on March 12, 2002, leaving behind a lot of followers and world famous fame - his paintings are still successfully sold at a price of at least one million dollars.

Alexander Colville.

Alexander Colville (David Alexander Colville) began his creative career as a battleist, but later changed the main direction of its work, in parallel experimenting with the technique, as well as the materials used.

Kolville born on August 24, 1920 in Toronto, and after 9 years, the family moved to Amherst (New Scotland). After completing training in Mount Allison, 24-year-old Alex was sent to Europe, where he honed his skill of the military artist. A year later, he returned to Canada and began to write paintings based on his military sketches and watercolors. At a certain point, Kolville decided to completely devote his life to art by completing military career. In the period from 1952 to the 1955th Hewitt Gallery in New York became the first institution that provided the author of his early commercial exhibitions. Meanwhile, Alex received the most serious support in Canada, from the National Gallery of Canada, which in the 50s bought as many seven paintings.

The famous picture "Nude and Dummy" is a turning point in the career of the artist, since with her appearance Alex leaves a military report in his works and focuses on personal topics. His creations are always closely connected with the surroundings: his family, animals, nature nearby. At the same time, all of them are not a simple reflection of reality, but rather represent a special look of the artist who combines beautiful and joyful in the paintings with anxious and dangerous. Technique and materials also change: from oil to resin or acrylic. During this period, Kolville works carefully and only over one picture at a time. Its sophisticated geometry and an incredible feeling of proportions set a special tone. As a result, for the year Alex creates only about three or four paintings.

Kolville became the first Canadian author whose works were presented in Japan. He also arranged exhibitions in Germany and Canada. In addition, he represented Canada on Venice Biennale in 1966. For his life, he received many awards for his creative achievements. Alex Kolville died in 2013 - by that time he had been the rector of the prestigious University of ACADIA.

John Hartman.

Another famous Canadian artist with a unique style - John Hartman. A native of Midland (Ontario), which appeared in 1950, he was known for his incredible landscapes that did not just show the world around, but also tell real stories. It was this distinguishing feature of the works of Hartman who brought him today's recognition.

Physical geography and portraits became the main elements of his work, but Hartman's highlight is considered its original location of objects, as well as their contact. In all his paintings, the special atmosphere of Ontario was always traced, because it was here that he spent most of his life. Drawings of Hartman, its watercolor and oil work reflect his long-standing dream of creating a work of art about a certain place, geographic location, which should bear a whole story in itself or a memoil.

Chortman's childhood was held in combination of early education in Midlende and summer holidays in the picturesque Georgian Bay, who had a huge impact on his future work. Despite the fact that the young artist attended drawing courses from George Wallas, he received official education in the field of economics. Wallace was not a fan of landscapes that he had somewhat complicated Hartman's classes, but the teacher did not affect his formation. In an invaluable contribution to the development of Hartman's skills and its search for its own atmosphere, David Blackwood, who also combined landscapes with a story story on the canvas.

Having completed education, John did not work by profession, but dedicated himself to art. If at first he only experimented in search of his own voice, then with time he managed to develop a special recognizable style. Some considered his transition to the paintings from the height of a bird'sral flight to the desire to be freed from the structure of the traditional landscape. The author himself claims that this change reflects his memories of flights in a dream and a long-standing love for the beauty of the cards. In the account of Hartman, many exhibitions in prestigious galleries and world recognition. The author is creating and today.
