Russian book premiums. Literary premiums

Russian book premiums. Literary premiums

Long list of nominees "Clear Polyana". At the request of The Village Lisa Birger tells why the literary awards are generally needed and whether they can help the amateur begin to navigate in modern Russian literature.

Lisa Birger

How did the literary premiums arise?

Literary premiums exist relatively recently - from about the beginning of the twentieth century. Of course, we can consider their forerunner medieval Trubadurov or Awards of the Academy of Sciences, which in Tsarist Russia were awarded for works with scientific and educational pathos. But in fact it is clear that in order for the award to really had some weight and meaning, you need the books to be the market, and the literature is an institution. And this did not occur until the last century, and in some countries (we will not show your finger) and later. The awards are needed by bookcuts to sell books, they need critics and other market participants to identify trends, but first of all they need to build a hierarchy - that is, for order. But since each hierarchy has its own, then the awards exist a variety of.

How many literary premiums in Russia?

Many - much more than you think. There is a "Poet" and the debut premium, the Bunin Prize and the Alexander Solzhenitsyn Award, awards established by the Union of Writers and the FSB. Total - a few dozen, if not hundreds, but not necessarily know them all.

If the premiums are so much, then how do we choose, what is more important than others?

There are two important factors: money, that is, the size of the prize fund, and the quality of the examination. For example, a "big book" is the second in the world (after the Nobelian) a prize fund - how does it come to her after this with all seriousness?

The material remuneration of Andrei White Prize, existing since 1978, was one ruble, a bottle of vodka and an apple, but the choice here (until in 2010 it was not overrupting everything) made professionals, and the prize remained one of the main. It is important how (and by whom!) The books are selected, how (and by whom!) They are evaluated and even what books do we eventually choose: the brightest? The most innovative? Most Popular? The most important? If you look for the ideal Russian Prize, then this is perhaps the "Enlightener" Award for the Best Scientific Popular Book in Russian (Long List 2016 declared on June 7). Two respected Alexander, Gavrilov and Arkhangelsky, choose books for a long list, from which, in turn, will be a short list of a serious scientific jury. Selection criteria are clear here and clear: artistic fascination and scientific accuracy.

Or maybe there is some one, but the most important premium?

Alas. But there are several important, which in the aggregate will help to make an idea of what is happening in modern literature. "Big book", for example, is good because she has three winners (first, second and third place) and a complex selection system with a bunch of experts - which did not prevent her this year at the level of the short list "Losing" two most important If not all the main books of the year: "Kaleidoscope" Sergey Kuznetsova and "Shadow Mazepa" Sergey Belyakova. "Russian Booker" should have dragged the reputation of the British fellow, but completely lost it in 2010, Handed by the Graphoman novel by Elena the flaw "Flower Cross". "National Bestseller" is trying to go for public taste and in the end it is often distributed to the taste of the taste. And so on - here, as in dates in Tinder, the farther in the forest, the impossible meeting with the ideal.

Is it really written so many novels in Russia?

But this is the most amazing: even in the times of the obvious publishing crisis, when only a few publishers left throughout the country, in which new Russian books are coming out, you can dial a long list of several dozen names. And anyway, some books are not located - for example, Book Blogger Sergey Osipov regularly constitutes his own long list of books that did not enter the list of "Big Books".

That's when the winners of the awards will begin to coincide, then talk about trouble. This is rarely happening, but, for example, in 2015, Roman Guzel Yakhina "Zulikha opens his eyes" received the first award of the "big book", and the "Clear Polyana" award (and the "book of the year" at the same time). This year, his fate may well repeat the "Winter Road" Leonid Yuzfovich, already marked by the "National Bestseller". On the other hand, it is easier for us - it will be necessary to read less.

Why do premiums, as a rule, are different winners? After all, they all have to choose the best book?

Different jury from different short lists compiled by different experts are chosen, in general, different. A more personal choice on the criterion "What I liked the most" exists only in "National Best", the "big book" votes for the most significant work of the year, "Russian buoy" tries to evaluate with more literary positions. In addition, many premiums (for example, at the "natcable") there is a rule, according to which the winners of other premiums cannot be nominated for them.

Can premiums be wrong?

And more than what is worthwhile in 2010, the "Russian Booker" is helped with a helpless graphoman and without five minutes by pornographic novel, Elena, the flaw "Flower Cross". Of the recent examples, the "Poet" premium of 2015: Juli Kim became her laureate, after which two former laureate, Alexander Kushner and Yevgeny Rain, not the last, to put it mildly, poets of modernity, came out of the jury.

In fact, the justice (or injustice) of the premium is most often assessed only after time. And here - a very demonitive example - all these expert advice and cunning jury votes make it possible to miss the most important thing. In 2011, the Russian buter, not having time because of the change of the sponsor, to complete the nomination procedure, decided to choose not the best book of the year, and the main book of the decade from the nominees of the past years. The winner was almost not seen at his time Roman Alexander Chudakov "Miscelves to the old steps" from the 2001 Booker Prize Short List. Only ten years later it became clear that this autobiographical "Roman-Idylliya" about how it was possible to live with the honor of the twentieth century, it turned out to be more important than fantasies about this very century Mikhail Shishkin and Lyudmila Ulitsky.

What if it's easier not?

The simplest thing is not to try to understand all the awards at once, but to choose the one that you like most and read all its nominees. A short list of literary awards for familiarization looks like this: "Big book", "Russian buoy", "National Bestseller", "Nose", "Clear Polyana". Well, there is also a "enlightener" award, laureates (and nominees of a short list) of which it is necessary to read all entirely if you read something at all.

"The big Book"

Prize with ambition

A huge prize fund, a complex system of nominations, several winners and attempt at all levels to use so many experts as possible: in the literary academy alite, the voting of the decisive winners, about a hundred people. Thanks to all this "big book", which has existed since 2005, managed to achieve the status of almost the main prize of Russia. She may also do not affect the literary process (the winner will not be famous), but quite reflects his current.

Procedure:

From nominated works (to push the book or manuscript can practically anyone) The Council of Experts first selects a long list (April), then short (Mai), and then read the books of a short list for half a year, exposing points, members of the Literary Academy of the Prize. If at the Academy itself about a hundred people, then the Council of Experts of Nasks and Strict and consists mainly of the editors of fat magazines, so if the "big book" and it is possible to freeze something important and ignore, then, as a rule, at the level of the long list.

Formed by the Board of Trustees of the Prize - it, as a rule, includes journalists, writers and cultural figures.

Prize Foundation:

The winner of the "Big Book" receives 3 million rubles, owners of the second and third places - one and a half and a million, respectively.

Laureates:

You can argue about the distribution of places, but the look at the "Big Book" really reflects the literary situation of the decade. Lavr Evgenia Dolazkina, Teleuria Vladimir Sorokina, "Zone of Flooding" Roman Stengin, "Resident" Zakhar Prilepina, "Candle" Valery Svalochuh - Such different, these novels have really been discussed most of all in recent years.

Three important laureate books

Valery Zaleuha
"Candle"

M.: "Time"

Secondward Prize 2015

Grand (one and a half thousand pages!) "Novel about everything", but in fact, first of all about how we all (on the example of a separate hero) we live and burn.

Not the last in a number of outstanding second premiums - the historic Roman Sergey Belyakova about Lev Gumileva, valuable not only attentive and honesty towards the hero and his ideas, but also the ability of the author without fantasies and vulgarity to tell this complex history with a wide range of readers.

"Yasnaya Polyana"

In search of classics

The "Clear Polyana" premium is distinguished by an impressive prize fund and a propensity to constant: the same jury in the same criteria chooses the books of unchanged quality here. The choice is sometimes too obvious, sometimes strange, but it is impossible not to be able to trust him.

Procedure:

Experts (journals, critics, publishing, members of the jury) nominate books, of which the same jury first choose a long list (June), then -corrot (September), and then - winners in several nominations (October).

The "Casual Polyana" has a practically unchanged jury, consisting of honorary literary critics and critics, his unchanged chairman - Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation for culture and art Vladimir Tolstoy.

Prize Foundation:

7 million rubles. The biggest gain - the winner of the nomination "XXI century": 2 million.

Laureates:

The main idea of "Clear Polyana" is to reward for approximateness to the classics, and the two main nominations - for those who have already become a classic (the nomination is called - "Modern Classic") and those who only seek those (nomination "XXI century" ). As a result, the first nomination is awarded as if for merits, and for the aggregate of the last winners in it became in different years Andrei Bitov, Valentin Rasputin and Fazil Iskander. And in the second nomination it is often duplicated by the fate of the "Big Book", which is awarded later and at the "Clear Polyana" does not look around: "Zuuleika opens his eyes" Yaghina's Guzeli in 2015, "Lavr" Eugene Divolazkin in 2013.

And yet, the "Casual Polyana" has a remarkable property to allocate strong and strong literature - the "island" of Vasily Golovanov, the stories for the children of Yuri Nechiporenko, the story of Mikhail Tarkovsky. Well, the long list of the nomination "Foreign Literature" in and years can be considered a list for compulsory reading.

Three important laureate books:

Vasily Glaovanov
"Island"

M.: Ad Marginem

Prize 2009.

Ten years of traveling to the Polar Island of Kolgyev - the search for the meaning of life in a separate space. It is significant that the "Island" premium took from the second time - he came out in 2002 almost nobody noticed and only in 2008 was reprimanded in Ad Marginem as deservedly - one of the main books of the decade.

Lyudmila Saraskina "Alexander Solzhenitsyn"

M.: "Young Guard"

Prize 2008.

Outstanding - both by the number of material, and by the ability of the author in difficult minutes to maintain Poker Face relative to his hero - the biography of one of the greatest Russian writers of the last century.

Aleksey Ivanov
"Gold Bunt,
or down the river Tesnin »

SPB: "ABC-Classic"

Prize 2006.

It is difficult to believe in it, but the whole big troop of literary premiums diligently accounted for the most readable and people's favorite author of the decade: in his piggy bank only "Clear Polyana" for the historic novel "Gold Bunta".

"Russian buoy"

Poor younger brother

The Russian Booker Prize is the younger brother of the British Browlery Prize. He was created in 1992 at the initiative of the British Council, but became something completely different in the end. Like the British elder brother, the jury is changing every year (only the perfect British ratio of bookcipers, writers, publishers and experts to see the jury and did not succeed, they have been weighted in grams from a bucker. As a result, there is a difference and taste - we never know which surprises from this jury to wait, and his solutions are more likely to challenge. Even a long list of premium is significantly limited in that they form it almost exclusively publishers. Paradoxically, however, it is precisely the unrealistic choice of "Russian Booker" often allows him to create trends, and not follow them, well, but the status of one of the oldest independent premiums does not allow us to score to him completely.

Procedure:

All publishers, as well as elected libraries and universities, have the right to nominate the "buoy". From the nominated books of the jury chooses a long list in July, short - in October, and by December declares the laureate - usually it is timed to the Non / Fiction fair.

Five people - as a rule, writers, critics, philologists (publishers and librarians usually fall out, because they are the right to nomination), which change every year.

Prize Foundation

The laureate receives 1,500,000 rubles, the finalists are ten times less.

Laureates:

Andrei Hair (Roman "Return to Panjrud"), but not Evgeny Dolazkin ("Laurel"), Alexander Snegirev ("Vera"), but not Roman Senchin ("Flood Zone"), Elena Kolyady ("Flower Cross"), but Not Margarita Chemlin ("Clootswog"). The list of non-ideal bucker solutions can be continued for a long time, but we are accustomed to a rapid - and even get some pleasure from the process.

Three important laureate books:

Andrey Volo.
"Return to Panjrud"

Prize 2013

Long road from Bukhara to Panzruda Boy guide and blind old man, but since the old man is actually -eable poet (and a real historical person), their travel eventually becomes something big than a simple road Store. Andrei Hair is fascinating, extractingly and with knowledge of the case opens to us the medieval East, and the award that is all of the year, all Evgeny Dollazkin rarely when was so deserved.

Vladimir Sharov "Return to Egypt"

M.: Elena Shubina Editorial

Premium 2014.

Olga Slavnikova
"2017"

M.: "Vagribus"

Prize 2006.

Ural anti-nightopia, which grew up from the Bazhov fairy tales, - Slavnikova was one of the first authors who solved what the reader wants.

"National Bestseller"

If there are no bestsellers, they need to be invented

The National Bestseller Prize was invented in 2001 as a true democratic: here the honorary chairman of the jury can suddenly be Sergey Shnurov, Ksenia Sobchak or Artemy Troitsky. Professionals and experts usually make up a long list of nominators - and here it is especially followed that everything in the process has taken part. As a result, there is still a rock and roll, but since it usually begins only at the last stage, from "natcable", as a rule, funny short lists and curious lists are long. More award is very dreaming for the laureate to be performed by her motto to "wake up famous", but because from the street in her still not to enter, this has yet happened.

Procedure:

The nominators put forward books on a long list. A big jury, each member of which has the right to choose from it two works and put them three and one score, respectively, votes for a short list (this vote Open - Reviews and Evaluation of the jury can be read on the site). Small jury again chooses the winner with open voting. Everything happens quite rapidly: in February - a long list, in April - short, and in June there is already a winner what to pull something.
