St. Petersburg is the birthplace of the musical theater of Russia. The court opera and ballet performances of the Petrovskaya capital were given already in the 30s of the 18th century. In 1783, the Bolshoi Theater of St. Petersburg was built, and in 1860 - the Mariinsky Theater (created by the project of the outstanding theatrical architect A. Kavos and named after the reigning Empress Maria Alexandrovna, wife of Alexander II). In 1935 - 1992 was named after S.M. Kirov. On this stage, the world premieres of many masterpieces of Russian opera classics took place. Among them are "A Life for the Tsar" and "Ruslan and Lyudmila" by Glinka, "Boris Godunov" and "Khovanshchina" by Mussorgsky, "Prince Igor" by Borodin, "The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia" by Rimsky-Korsakov, "The Queen of Spades" P.I. Tchaikovsky. A distinctive Russian vocal school has been formed at the Mariinsky Theater. The fate of many stars of the world opera art is inextricably linked with him. The greats Fyodor Chaliapin and Ivan Ershov, Nikolai Figner, Leonid Sobinov and Felia Litvin sang on this stage, and in subsequent years - Nikolai Pechkovsky, Sofya Preobrazhenskaya, Mark Reisen, Georgy Nelepp. The Marinsky Theater has always had a reverence for classical traditions. At the same time, performances took place on its stage in the 20th century, which became epoch-making, milestones for the development of the new aesthetics of the opera house. Here Alexander Benois, Konstantin Korovin, Alexander Golovin and Valentin Serov opened up new opportunities for theatrical painting to the world. Here Vsevolod Meyerhold staged his brilliant performances, each of which became an artistic phenomenon that is of interest to the world to this day.

The repertoire of the theater includes works of the "golden fund" of opera classics. In recent years, the theater has performed joint productions with the largest opera stages in the world: Covent Garden, Opera de Bastille, La Scala, La Fenice, Tel Aviv and San Francisco Operas.

The theater is deservedly considered one of the oldest in Russia and thanks to the high level of training of opera singers and a choreographic troupe known throughout the world.

Guests of the Northern Capital seeking to join the world of art should find out in advance where the Mariinsky Theater is located in St. Petersburg. The main building is located on Teatralnaya Square, but lovers of opera and ballet can also visit the branches of the Mariinsky (as the theater is popularly called). By the address:

  • Second stage (Mariinka-2): st. Decembrists, 34;
  • Concert Hall (Mariinka-3): st. Decembrists, 37;
  • Primorskaya stage: Vladivostok, st. Fastovskaya, 20.

Although the current building was opened to the public in 1860 with the premiere of the famous opera A Life for the Tsar, the official date of birth of the Mariinsky is the end of the 18th century. In October 1783, the grand opening of the Bolshoi Theater, built by the personal order of Empress Catherine and designed by the famous Italian architect Rinaldi, took place. Italian and French operas were often staged here, as well as vocal concerts and musical evenings.

In the 19th century, most of the performances were staged on the stage of the Circus Theater, erected opposite the Bolshoi and almost completely destroyed by the fire of 1859. At the same time, work began on the construction of a new imperial theater, which became a real architectural decoration of the city. They were led by the talented Italian architect Alberto Cavos.

Most visitors are interested in who the Mariinsky Theater is named after. The euphonious name was given to him in honor of the wife of the Russian monarch Maria. The wife of the then ruler Alexander II was known as a real patroness of the fine arts. Therefore, the first performers of the Mariinsky were the singers and choreographers of her personal troupe.

Theater interior

The building of the Mariinsky is interesting not only for its unusual semicircular shape, but also for its interior furnishings. When visiting the performance, you should pay attention to the following attractions:

Tsar's box. It is one of the largest and most pompous in the building .. Once the box was decorated with a monogram, which picturesquely combined the first letters of the names of Tsar Alexander II and his wife. In Soviet times, it was replaced by the hammer and sickle emblem, but in the 90s of the twentieth century, the original decoration of the box was restored. Nowadays, ordinary people can also buy tickets to it on the official website of the Mariinsky Theater, located in the center of St. Petersburg, unless seats are reserved for diplomats and members of the government. The cost of tickets to the royal box is 4100-4400 RUB. In the wall of the box, you can see a secret door behind the scenes, which leads directly to the dressing rooms of the artists, to the "female part" of the theater. According to legend, in this way the Russian tsars visited their beloved ballerinas incognito.

Orchestra pit with rising and falling floor. For this, hydraulic lifts are built into it. During the restoration of the building, a layer of shards of broken crystal dishes was found under the flooring. As it turns out, over 200 years ago, architects used it to improve room acoustics.

Hall of Alexander Golovin, arranged directly under the roof of the theater and bearing the name of an outstanding Russian painter of the late 19th - first half of the 20th century. Nowadays, most of the scenery for operas and ballets is created here. Many of them can be safely called masterpieces of fine art. An armchair is still kept in the room, with the artist painted on a portrait by his colleague Yakovlev. This painting can be seen in the foyer of the 3rd tier.

The premise is famous for the fact that it was there that Golovin painted his famous canvas, on which the genius Chaliapin is depicted in the image of the usurper Godunov from the opera of the same name. Here prominent Russian poets Voloshin and Gumilyov quarreled, and it came to bloodshed and a duel.

A curtain. Its author is the same Golovin, who executed it surprisingly skillfully in the 1910s. The curtain is considered a symbol of the Mariinsky Theater and combines traditional visual techniques and appliqués, exactly reproducing the pattern of the train from one of the ceremonial dresses of Empress Maria.

Three-tiered chandelier, made of bronze and illuminating the auditorium. Its weight is over 2 tons. More than 200 light bulbs are installed in the lamp, giving an unusually bright light thanks to more than 2000 crystal pendants. The latter adorn all tiers of the chandelier, and the plafond is painted with images of merry nymphs and cupids, as well as portraits of famous Russian playwrights of past centuries.

Bell Has been in the theater for over 200 years. It is used in the operas Khovanshchina and Boris Godunov. According to legend, immediately after the revolution, he was removed from one of the temples and thrown into the Neva. From there it was pulled out shortly before the start of the Great Patriotic War and presented to the Mariinsky Theater.

Repertoire of the Mariinsky Theater

The 2017 Mariinsky Theater poster will delight art lovers with a variety of opera and ballet performances. Some of them have been on the scene for decades, others are designed for lovers of new products in the field of beauty. The Mariinsky's repertoire in recent years has included the following performances:

  • "The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia." This mystical story about love for the Motherland and the tender feelings of a prince and a simple girl, as interpreted by the directors, received a completely new sound. From the old Slavic legend, the action of the opera is quite organically transferred to our modern reality with homeless people and the clothes of heroes familiar for the 21st century. People depicting animals, insects instead of dashing Tatar invaders and today's homeless people in the role of beggars of the 13th century look quite shocking.
  • "Swan Lake". The main stage of the theater has been the scene of a beautiful love story thousands of times between Prince Siegfried and the enchanted swan princess, who has never lost her charm. The ballet to the immortal music of Tchaikovsky is a classical choreographic production based on the ideas of the famous choreographer Marius Petipa.
  • "The music is pleasant and unpleasant." At this purely instrumental concert, you will hear both melodic and touching, as well as unusual and rather extravagant musical works performed by talented violinists, pianists, clarinetists, cellists and flutists.
  • Carmen. In the new version of the opera, all the same famous operatic parts are sounded, however, its action is somewhat modernized and evokes more associations with our reality. A special find of the director is the use of a large number of stairs as decorations. According to his version, they symbolize the striving of the human soul for something sublime and divine.
  • "Salome". This is one of the most anticipated productions of the New Stage of the Mariinsky Theater. The biblical story of Herod's beautiful stepdaughter, who demanded the prophet's head on a platter, turns into a struggle between global ideas on which human society is based: selfishness and altruism. Modern videography adds to the spectacle of the opera.
  • "Yenufa". The story of a lonely pregnant girl who was abandoned by her lover is as old as the world, but the Mariinsky artists managed to give it a new sound. In the complex family twists and turns of this opera, many of the audience will find out what happened to them or their acquaintances.
  • Giselle. The experiences of the young heroine, deceived by her lover and died suddenly, will hardly leave the ballet fans indifferent. Incredibly beautiful dances of the heroes, reflecting the whole gamut of human emotions, will be a real gift for true aesthetes.

When the singer Anna Mironova enters the stage, it immediately becomes light in my soul. Her lyrical voice, no matter what music she performs, penetrates the soul and makes listeners forget about everyday worries and vanity - so subtly the singer penetrates into the world of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Glinka. She manages to convey the mood of each of these great composers. But the range of colors of her voice is wide, she is also good at low notes, and these smooth and sometimes unexpected transitions from high notes to softer and lower ones especially fascinate listeners. Anna Mironova is subject to both Russian and European classical music (she sings in different European languages), not only classical romance or an aria, but also Gershwin and Lowe, and many musical masterpieces from different countries and genres. Anna performs music well-known to many in such a way that new facets open up in it, a kind of healing power. Elena Obraztsova's creative heritage is truly enormous. Her career cannot but admire and impress. And it requires its own study, how the art of composers, artists, and writers is studied. Having entered the world galaxy of outstanding opera artists of the twentieth century, having performed the entire leading mezzo-soprano repertoire on the stages of all famous theaters, Elena Obraztsova in our country won fame and love of listeners also with a huge number of chamber music concerts. She, perhaps, became the last of the opera stars of Russia, who with such persistence conveyed to the audience the masterpieces of vocal music from different eras.

Today this wonderful tradition has practically died out, gone into the past along with the era of the Great, truly Legendary, Singers. But Elena Obraztsova's career coincided with the expanded possibilities of capturing performing skills in sound and video recording. A large number of Elena Obraztsova's concerts were recorded, and some of them were even filmed. Now these are documents of the era when this beautiful singer shone on the stages of theaters and concert halls.

"TRAIN TO PETERSBURG"

An evening of contemporary music and jazz

Trio "FUSION POINT": Kirill Sokirko (piano), Roman ZASTAVNY (double bass), Roman SMIRNOV (drums)

Ticket price 400 rubles.

The Fusion Point collective was created by pianist and composer Kirill Sokirko in 2009. The project was conceived as an instrumental chamber group that continues the tradition of performing in the trio format and performs author's music. The composition of the instruments was very common in the jazz environment - piano, bass guitar, drums. The first concerts were held in this composition. The audience noted the influence of classical music on the performed material, as the musical form prevailed over the improvisation that is characteristic of jazz. In 2011, after a series of concerts on the club stages of St. Petersburg, Fusion Point takes part in international festivals in Russia, Ukraine and Poland. Also, Fusion Point participate in programs, together with the chamber choir of the Smolny Cathedral as a guest group, and in early 2012 the debut album of the group - "Morning Rain" ("Morning Rain") is released. Critics take the album positively - mostly abroad. In the same year, the first extended solo concert of Fusion Point, which was recorded in DVD format, took place.

In 2013, Fusion Point began performing with guest musicians and recording their second disc, Mind and Illusion. At the same time, Roman Zastavny (double bass) joined the team.

The trio begins cooperation with the Mariinsky Theater. In the chamber halls of the new stage (Mariinsky-2), new programs are being implemented, and subscription concerts are being successfully held. In 2015, the musicians began work on the album "Circles of Time" - the third studio release, which is scheduled for release in 2017. Together with the studio work, the collective is actively conducting experiments in the direction of the synthesis of arts. So, for example, the idea of a special program was born, where the poems of poets of the 20th century were included in the musical material - this became a successful combination of poetry and music.

The ensemble's repertoire reflects various jazz and contemporary musical trends. Despite the polystyling of the compositions, some critics note that the sound of Fusion Point can be attributed to such a direction as modern jazz.

Fusion Point musicians - within the collective and separately - participate in concert programs of contemporary music not only on jazz stages, but also in the halls of St. Petersburg, such as the Great Hall of the Philharmonic Society, the Small Hall of the Conservatory. A. K. Glazunova, Concert and Exhibition Hall "Smolny Cathedral", Mariinsky Theater.

How did Agnes Sorel, bypassing church prohibitions, manage to introduce a fashion for open breasts? How the Pope's daughter was allowed to wear dresses with revealing necklines? Who of the rulers gave their luxurious clothes for the church and why. How did Spain turn from the birthplace of the Inquisition into one of the freest countries? For whom today famous couturiers, inspired by religious themes, create new collections? And how over the centuries fashion has depended on the dominant religion.

Special guest of the evening - composer and pianist Eduard NAZAROV

Ticket price 400 rubles.

We invite all connoisseurs of Armenian and Russian culture to the concert of the "ASHUG" musical and poetic ensemble. The evening will be dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the great marine painter - Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (Ayvazyan).

"Duduk, exciting like the sea ..." is a new program created by us for the anniversary year of the artist, whose work is loved by so many people, regardless of their age and nationality. However, not everyone knows that Ayvazovsky is a pseudonym derived from the Armenian surname Ayvazyan, and it is the Armenian roots that, in our opinion, were able to form such a spiritualized personality, the members of the group believe. - Anyone who has ever heard a duduk cannot but agree that it is capable of disturbing the deepest feelings. Anyone who has ever seen the sea experiences similar feelings. Music is also a great artist who writes on the canvases of our consciousness. "

The ensemble's programs were appreciated by people of different ages, social status, and nationalities. Music and poetry complement each other gracefully here. Each program is a holiday that is definitely worth getting to in order to touch the live sound, genuine feelings and folk color.
