The material set out in the textbook covers the period of development of Russian music since the XVIII century and ending with the work of Tchaikovsky. Following the two essays about the Russian musical culture of the XVIII and XIX century, chapters dedicated to six largest classic composers are placed. Each chapter consists of a brief life language and work parsing, the study of which is provided for by the program.
Published as an annex to the textbook "Reader in Russian music literature" (E. Sirnov and A. Samonov) is designed for students to learn more to learn musical material, independently playing individual works or excerpts from them. To this end, some of the most complex works for students are given in a lightweight arrangement for piano. Part of the examples from the opera "Boris Godunov" Mussorgsky is given in the editorial office of Rimsky-Korsakov.

Creativity of composers-Classic Glinka, Dargomyzhsky, Borodina, Mussorgsky, Roman Corsakov, Tchaikovsky - a genuine treasure of Russian culture of the XIX century. Their traditions found their implementation and development in the works of composers of the end of the XIX and early XX century - Taneyev and Glazunov, Lyadov and Arenal, Kalinikov, Scriabin and Rakhmaninov. All of them are worthy successors of their great predecessors.
Russian classical music has evolved in close connection with advanced Russian literature and art. The ideological and aesthetic principles of the classic composers of the last century were a kind of beacon, freshen the way to Russian musicians of the 20th century.
The whole life of Russian composers-classics is a selfless service of art, their people, their homeland. And art for them is a means of communicating with people. Not for the narrow circle of subtle connoisseurs created their works Russian classics, but for the whole people.
The music of classic composers reflects the centuries-old history of our Motherland, the liberation struggle of the Russian people against the oppression and violence, the people with his mental beauty, grief and a dream of a bright future.
The best traditions of classic composers found their development in the work of the Musicians of subsequent generations - Myaskovsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Khachaturian, Kabalevsky, Shebalin, Sviridov and many other composers.
