- What was it for the situation?

I grew up in such a world that the usual person is just unfamiliar. Born in the village of Ukurik, in the Chita region, that near Buryatia. Our land is saturated with myths, legends, legends. There they believe in spirits, shamans, witchcraft. Although they believe it is not even quite a suitable word. As residents of ancient Greece and did not think to doubt the existence of gods, their will, spirits, dragons, all sorts of unclean, quite comfortably existing in such a system of the world, about it so live and Buryats. And the man who grew up and living outside the Buryat land is difficult to perceive all this.

- And you really had to become a shaman, not a sculptor?

I have powerful shaman roots. But since childhood, I sought to be another: to be an artist, realize myself in visual art. In general, we were brought up like this: never scolded, never beat, never advised anything. For example, I was seriously engaged in boxing and very well saw that parents belong to this disapprovingly. I did not say a single word, but I felt their extreme discontent.

- But did you ignore it?

The fact is that I was forced to play sports, I needed to fight well to survive. At seven years I came to the boarding school, orders in which are quite comparable to army. This cruel world has become a contrast to the world of my early childhood, filled with beauty, fairy tales, communication with nature. I think that the disease that has pursued me up to youthful age and which many have taken to the category of PR techniques, was not least caused by this dissonance. And shamans, curses prescribed by them methods of treatment - all this was also present and completely logically imposed on the life situation. I am a very sensitive person, and I was extremely difficult among rudeness and cruelty. I had to learn to defend yourself.

- How was artistic education inside the family?

My parents are peasants, but the father at the same time is the Buddhist artist. Not an artist by profession, he always painted, cut out from a tree for Buddhist temples. Such an artist can only be a believer. All upbringing in the family signed children - and we are eight people - it is on artistic creativity. We were all sculpted, cut the wood, painted the fabric wool, coins for metal. Sitted in a circle and fabric, for example, a carpet. Father gave a certain topic, and each in its own way of its fabric part of the general pattern. In the same way, they painted: each in the measure of his forces performed that fragment of the general picture, which he was on the shoulder. So I always dreamed of being the artist.

- Buddhist artist?

You see, this concept - Buddhist art - has its own specificity. Everything that the Buddhist artist does, subordinate to one goal: to express the attitude of the sincerely believer person to religion. The little child is God, all he does is absolutely devoid of sinfulness. And from this point of view, everything that I did then, in childhood, was much closer to Buddhist art. But you need to understand: what I do today is what is represented in my exhibitions and in the catalogs is absolutely secular creativity. There is a huge number of nuances, which, in fact, make a sculpture of religious or secular. In order to seriously deal with Buddhist art, I need a lot of learning in more detail and deeply - traditions, story ... The slightest mistake entails the punishment - this is a look at the work of Buddhist. Religious things are designed to strictly match the canon. Today I do not feel ready, quite mature for this kind of work. I left it for later, the time will come, and I will do the really Buddhist plastic. Probably for a person far from the Buddhist environment, any exotic - Mongolian, Tibetan, Buryat and Buddhist. I was born in this cultural tradition, grew up in it, and, apparently, all I do, will carry a somewhat exotic, and for the amateur is the Buddhist echo. Even if I woof, it is impossible to get rid of it.

In Buryatia, I lived in an absolutely closed space, did not know in America or in Europe, in Moscow, it was a couple of times and not for a long time. I did not see the museums of the world, did not have a particularly clear idea of \u200b\u200bcontemporary art. But, you know, sometimes it seems to me that if I had rotated in a more open environment since childhood, I would not have the way I was. My work would be mediocre and faceless, it would be difficult for them to catch my individuality. Of course, information is necessary, it is impossible, and it is impossible to artificially protect yourself from it. But some closure allowed me to fully absorb in myself, survive and feel the culture and history of Buryatia, my native people.

- But at the same time, did you get a classic art education?

- Yes, I graduated from the Branch of the Sculpture of the Krasnoyarsk Art Institute. But, as you can see, academic education did not adjust my own copyright look, did not make my work more European, did not deprive them of what is called "ethnic flavor". It is possible, I am graduated from any of the more authoritarian schools of painting - say, Surikovsky Institute in Moscow or the Academy of Repin Arts in St. Petersburg, everything would be somewhat different. There, in any case, until recently, they taught hard enough. Frequently from the influence of a certain school in painting is difficult: we know a lot of examples when the whole flow of students writes as their teacher - and nothing can be done about it.

In this case, do I need to study the artist? Not in this threat to its originality?

To do anything, it is necessary to have a specific database. At the Institute I got purely academic skills: an image of light, shadow, proportions, plastic tricks. Mastering all this at the art gives freedom in the expression of the idea. But the study did not affect my perception of the world. I was very lucky with teachers. Among them were, for example, people like Eduard Pakhomov and Azat Bayarlin, they themselves quite recently graduated from the rope and did not try to somehow influence their students from the standpoint of authority, did not apply themselves as mentors. Influenced, to educate in art - the case is extremely responsible, and they, fortunately, understood. We are more friendly friendly than students' apprenticeship. But after the Institute had to be engaged in the most different things, including those who do not have any attitude towards visual arts. After all, I graduated from the institute in 1992, remember that it was a crisis, uncertainty. In addition, it was in Ulan-Ude, and not in Moscow. If there were wealthy foreigners interested in painting, then everything was much more difficult there. In any case, it was not realistic to earn any art. But I had to contain a family. And I, for example, engaged in business - traded tea. Everything was. I was very lucky: my wife always supported me. She accountant, then worked in the banking structure and did not dive me, did not make me go and whatever money for money. My wife said to me: "Wait, let him not now, but later your time will come."

This is still not my vocation. I've seen the guys really ingenious in this area, a business - this is also a calling, exactly the same as drawing or singing. I do not think I could give up your dreams to become a sculptor. Now, when my wife and I come to rest on a tourist, for me, just flour - sit without a business on the banks of the river. I think about my future work and at the same time draw, I see what I want to do is completely. After all, sculpture, in my opinion, is more difficult than painting. There, the artist deals with a plane, something can hide from the viewer, to hide, play with light and shadow. All what sculptor does - in sight.

In general, it fonds me much. After the institute, I worked for five years in jewelry. It was, on the one hand, curious for me, on the other - let out the opportunity to earn something: I did my first exhibition for sculptures at the expense earned by jewelry plastic.

Now I'm somewhat tired of the sculpture, I want to return to the jewelry again. Perhaps this will be some utilitarian, the researchers may be figurines made of precious metals. I can not say exactly. Book graphics still attract me, I really want to illustrate the heroic Buryat Epos. Folding out over the centuries, they became too complex for the perception of an ordinary person, if he is not an ethnographer and not a historian, so high-quality literary processing is very important here. If this will be represented by someone from the writers, I would gladly work over the illustrations. There is also an idea to engage in animation, develop drawings for a large cartoon, again based on Buryat mythology. I wonder everything, I am in many ways ready to try myself.

- And what books do you read?

Now I began to read, by the way, much more than in youth. Of course, I reread fat, Dostoevsky, it must be done. Many ideas, the thoughts of these authors I begin to understand truly only now. I read fashionable authors - I think it is also necessary, at least in order to get an idea of \u200b\u200bbooks that are popular today. So Haruki Murakami and Paolo Coelo read. By the way, I really liked the "alchemist" coelo, I even felt that this book was about me: so many parallels with my life, with my thoughts. It was interesting to me.

"You know, they say that Coelho, being a student of the magician, enchanted the circulation of his books, so they disagree so quickly. They are talking about that you specially energetically charge your sculptures and a person, hitting this charge, cannot quietly pass by.

Yes, I read someone from art historians something similar. Naturally, having a very strong predisposition to shamanic practice, I simply cannot but inform my things some potential. One shaman who came to my exhibition, just flew from the hall: he became impossible to be near my sculptures. These are very thin things. But especially for my statuettes sell, I, of course, do not spend rites over them.

- How do relationships folded with critics?

Honestly, while I did not notice any negative serious criticism. Apparently, the mate art historians have not reached me. When they get, I will look carefully, suddenly in their comments will be rational grain?

- Who do you like from modern colleagues?

- My interests, priorities are constantly changing. If we talk about contemporaries, I'm interested in Jacomo Manza, Henry Moore, Brankuzy. Not so long ago, I discovered the Italian sculptor Marino Marini. So far I have not seen his works "live", I found them primitive.

Previously, the main landmarks in art for me were those who were imposed and promoted by the school: Greece, Rome, Italian revival. But when I myself began to be interested in the world culture in detail, I realized that there were no less interesting and significant items. For example, in the sculpture of Africa there are externally absolutely primitive things, but perfection in them is no less than in David Michelangelo. Having come to the museum, I first go to the Hall of Primitive Culture. The art of this period is not hidden under the husks of civilization. It's close to me from Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Phenicia, in the direction of India, China and Japan. And all that was done south - let's say, Indonesia, - I don't like it: too, in my opinion, sweet. But in principle, if modern art had reached the level of primitive, it would be just aesthetic breakthrough. If you set the goal and ride around Russia, you can find a dozen very interesting sculptors. In Yakutsk, in the Urals there are guys on the head above the masters revealed today. They just sit in their outback, and no one knows about them. All parties and PR shares occur in Moscow, it is here that the artist becomes famous. After all, in order for the museum or collector to bought the work of this or that artist, it should be demonstrated.

- In modern Russia there is an institution of patrony?

It should be in every cultural society, in our, fortunately, is reborn. I was lucky, Konstantin Khankhalayev met on my way, he literally pulled me to Moscow for his ears. Someone should help artists, without this it is impossible to develop art. I did not know whether it would be perceived and claimed what I am doing, outside of my land, but I did not think about it, I just looked for what he was fascinated. I understood that this search was a thin blade, step left, step right - and you got stuck, just did not find your face. This is the main danger, because in this case you are not interested in yourself nor the viewer. But, judging by the fact that my exhibitions are interesting in Europe, and in America, and in Russia, I dare to hope that I managed to stay on this fine face in the future.

Dasha Namdakov - Russian sculptor, schedule and jeweler, member of the Union of Artists of the Russian Federation. Born in 1967 in the Chita region, graduated from the Krasnoyarsk Art Institute. In 2003, Dasha was awarded the silver medal of the Russian Academy of Arts for the works presented at the personal exhibitions in Moscow.
In recent years, Dasha held more than 15 personal inserts in the largest museums of the world: the State Tretyakov Gallery and the State Museum of the Peoples of the Nations of the East in Moscow, the Center for Tibetan Culture "Tibetan House" in New York, the Beijing Museum of World Arts, Museum of Art Guangzhou in China , National Art Museum.
