This building has a rich history: back in 1711, in this place Peter I laid the palace for his daughter Anna and called this Palace Italian. From this palace there were names for large and small Italian streets (now Italian street and Zhukovsky Street).

After the restoration, some departments of the Public Library are located in it (now - the Russian National Library), and the concert hall itself is located in the premises of the former church of St. Catherine, built also by J. Kurengy. The overall interior of the temple has been preserved to this day unchanged.

The architecture of the hall was solved in the strict style of early classicism (J. Kaprengy), the columns of the ionic order decorate the entrance, smooth walls are supplemented with pilasters, warm light falls through the semi-curvous windows. The hall has an extraordinary acoustics providing a philharmonic sound. The atmosphere of the hall in all incoming causes feelings of joy and peace.
