E-book formats: what they are and what they differ. What is the difference between e-book formats and which format is preferred

Almost all people who ask me the board of choosing a particular reader, ask questions and about e-book formats - what better and why. In this article I will answer these questions very detailed; I will consider both formats for reading fiction and formats for reading the literature of technical, scientific and educational.

Fiction

There are the following formats in which you can meet artistic literature on the Internet: TXT, RTF, FB2, EPUB, MOBI, DOC, PDF, DJVU. I will immediately say that it is better to buy / download books in Epub., FB2. or MOBI.. These formats are most adapted for reading fiction.

PDF and DJVU formats are too heavy and uncomfortable; Often, the text in them is actually a picture, that is, you can only scale the entire page, but not the size of the font itself. On devices for reading (readers) books in PDF and DJVU are sometimes displayed: beaks can be very small; Read the text is inconvenient.

TXT and RTF formats are deprived of such drawbacks, but have other disadvantages: the text in TXT cannot be formatted at all, that is, headlines, epigraphs, the quotes will not be highlighted; Moreover, the TXT does not support covers, pictures and tables. This is a very poor, simplest format. In RTF, of course, the possibility of formatting is richer, but there are no shortcomings: automatically collectable table of contents and footnotes are not supported. In addition, the RTF files usually weigh quite a lot, and some reader devices are not always correctly displayed.

DOC format (and its type DOCX) is excellent for complex documents, but for fiction not suitable: it is too cumbersome, complicated; DOC documents are often displayed differently on different devices.

It is quite another thing - the top of the specialized formats, sharpened precisely under fiction literature: Epub, Mobi, FB2 (and its variety FB2.zip). These formats are based on the so-called "floating layout", which allows you to change the size, the headset of the font, the magnitude of the cross-interval and the width of the fields. In this case, these formats support pictures, tables, automotive table of contents, footnotes and many other things. Read books in FB2 / FB2.zip, Epub, Mobi is really nice and comfortable.

Of course, there are certain differences between these formats, but they are insignificant for beginners. Although it is worth noting that in the Russian-speaking Internet the most books in FB2, in Epub - already less, and in Mobi - even less.

The final format selection also depends on your reader: with some format it can work better, with some worse. Here you have to experiment. In addition, there are devices that support only one format from the specified triple. For example, Amazon Kindle reads only Mobi, and B & N Nook - only EPUB.

More information about FB2 format can read about Epub -, about Mobi -.

Scientific, technical and educational literature

It is already more difficult here: this kind of literature is usually distributed in PDF, DJVU, Doc (DOCX) formats, each of which, as I noted earlier, has certain disadvantages. It is sometimes still complicated by the fact that some books are available only in one format, and sometimes - and only in one version.

DOC format, in principle, not so bad - in comparison with PDF / DJVU. On the computer read in it books more or less comfortable. Worse dealing with readers: Some readers displays it almost like naked text, excluding a number of illustrations, tables, formulas, and so on. Others are displayed rather as a picture: the design elements are shown, but you cannot change the size and headset of the font, which sometimes turns into a catastrophe.

PDF. There are three options for this format: text, graphic ("picture") and graphic ("picture") with an OCR layer. The first option is most preferable: it may contain all formatting elements, and the text remains scalable. In the case of graphic PDF, the text is just a picture that can be increased only; The font size is not subject to change. On devices with small screens, graphic PDF read is therefore very difficult.

Sometimes on the pages of graphic PDF is superimposed by the OCR layer using the text recognition program. In the PDF book with the OCR layer, you can search, use the dictionary. This option is not bad. But, again, not all devices for reading this OCR layer "see". Yes, and increase the font size it does not allow. Therefore, the OCR layer often turns out to be useless.

DJVU format as a whole resembling a graphic PDF: Usually it is just a set of scans or photos of a paper book. The quality of these scans / photo can be just terrible, and maybe quite decent. Sometimes the OCR layer is superimposed on the scans / photos using the text recognition program. In the DJVU book with an OCR layer, you can search, use the dictionary. This option is not bad. But, again, not all reading devices, this OCR layer "see", and the font size it will not increase. Therefore, often the OCR layer is practically useless.

Let's summarize: the most preferred format for reading scientific / technical / educational literature is a text PDF, I would put DOC to second place, on the third - graphic PDF and DJVU with an OCR layer. The last place is occupied by picture PDF and DJVU without an OCR layer.

Documents, Tables and Presentations

Most of the documents, tables and presentations are distributed in MS Office formats: DOC / DOCX, XLS / XLSX, PPT / PPTX. This formats are very functional, but unfortunately, quite "bulky" and very "closed" (in other words, third-party developments are quite difficult to create a program for reading files in these formats). Therefore, some devices do not support them. You have to translate documents in PDF.

Move the document / Table / Presentation in PDF is very easy: it allows you to make any decent text / tabular editor. In addition, you can use some converter: you can find their list.

If the document is simple, and most importantly in it - text, it is better to convert it in PDF, but in FB2 - so it will be read on a reader with great comfort. See the list of relevant converters.

Enjoy reading!

Sometimes it seems that it is quite difficult to determine the format, there are so many of their advantages. Many authors are asked: "How to choose a format for an e-book?" We conducted our analysis of formats and found out what exactly the best format for ordinary books. We carefully studied many formats, and they considered them both in terms of the convenience of the reader and in terms of the convenience of the author. Let's plunge into the details a little and see what influenced our choice.

Why is Epub - the best format?

During the development of our services, we studied some technical nuances that affect the appearance and work with the electronic book.

Let's start with the simplest - managing the display of the book. Those. The reader's possibility to change the font size and page orientation. Epub perfectly adapts to changing the size of the device screen or font size. I would like to note that the specification states that in fact the format supports 2 layout modes - first (reflowable) when you can change these parameters, and the second (Fixed-layout) when you can clearly indicate where it is located.

Consider the layout modes somewar more.

Placement reflowable

Into Russian can be translated as fluent, Adaptive or floating. Allows you to adjust the contents of the book to the device screen, change the color and font size. Ideal for ordinary books with simple text - novels, poems, technical literature. Those. A total of a clear image binding or a complex visual representation.

This marking is not suitable for visual interactive books and children's books with many illustrations, that is, those where a spatial binding of graphics, a different kind of a combination of pictures and rugs. The Epub format itself allows you to create interactive books, but the adaptive design of such books is real art.

This is what the adaptive markup looks

The use of this markup is ideally in the case when you definitely do not know where and how your book will be made. Due to the flexibility of markup, the book will be correctly displayed almost on any device, ranging from the computer and ending with some smart clock. Plus, this marking is perfect for people with disabilities.

Fixed Marking - Fixed-Layout

This type of markup implies that all elements have a clearly fixed position on the page with a clearly specified size. This markup has a format that is most close to the physical media, for example a regular paperbook page. All in their places and no adaptation. On devices, adaptation most often looks like a scale scaling with all this in the ensuing consequences. What looks acceptable on the computer screen is already fine on the tablet, and on the screen of the smartphone do not discern at all. Well, the game with a magnification and a decrease in scale turns into a reader torture.

Fixed Markup Display Example

This format is suitable when you know exactly that your product will read on a carrier with a specific size, under which your work will be sparkled. It is initially assumed that this markup is designed for further printing of the work, so it indicates the dimensions and format of the future carrier. we not We recommend using this markup for e-books, so it limits the reading area of \u200b\u200bbooks with defined screen size.

The most common digital representative of this markup is a PDF format, but EPUB also supports it.

We decided to reduce popular formats in the table and show the support of various marking inside them.

The layout figured out. Now we consider the most exciting authors moment - copyright.

Support copyright protection at e-book formats

As a rule, the authors insist on support for DRM (Digital Rights Management) or technical means of copyright protection in e-books. This is one of the most unpleasant for both the authors and readers, but affects the interests of publishers too. And the main problem is that there is no reliable way to protect against copying, because The book is a source of predominantly text information presented in graphical form. You can create an exceptionally reliable way of delivering content by encrypted file transfer to a special separate application or even a special separate book reading device, but it will all be offered a simple camera with subsequent text recognition. So all the most complex and unpleasant procedures will be leveled by the most primitive way of copying, which is already more than two centuries. All that sees a person's eye, it will all see the camera. And then the case of technology.

So, what is the case with support for DRM in various formats. We collected information and placed in the table

From the table, it can be seen that EPUB, PDF and MobiPocket are formats that are perfectly supporting copyright protection.

However, as we noted above, nothing but the inconvenience for the DRM user no longer creates. Many were in a situation where a book urgently needs, but it is not available in a format available for your device. As a rule, this situation often finds a person by surprise or at the most inopportune moment. Usually people decide that in different ways, in most cases just looking for another book on the same topic, but already in an affordable format. As a result, the author loses readers and, of course, money.

The main problem of the protection of the field of rights lies in the field of people's education and their attitude to copyright protection. For example, after all, no one comes to the head to steal directly from the store, although everything lies, only to last hand. Similarly, with digital content. Just aware of the fact that the product belongs to the author and this is the result of his work, which must be paid. The more people aware of this, the less books will be stolen.

Providing legal access to books is one of the missions of our library.

Summarizing the above, we again come to the conclusion that Epub is an excellent choice and from copyright protection.

What is wrong with the EXE format?

Surely many have heard such a format. This format is called the application for the Windows operating system. That's right, this is not an e-book format, this is a regular Windows program that needs to be installed and which only works on a very limited circle of computers and Windows tablets. Open such a "book" on the iPad, Kindle, Nook and Android tablet will not be able to not speaking about other systems such as OS X or Linux. Moreover, because The format is an executable file, then viruses are very often cling to it, which makes it exclusively unsafe. That's so simple, I downloaded the book in EXE, and got a virus. The attackers often lay out viruses in the Spirit "All Books Dontsova.EXE", but instead of books people get a bundle of viruses.

There is a similar format called Java - for a while was popular on old smartphones. The essence is the same - the program, but only for the smartphone. Similar disguise viruses for smartphones.

About FICTIONBOOK

Popular called FB2. Popular mainly in Russia and in the post-Soviet space, so we can safely call it a national format.

Nevertheless, this format contains logical markup, a book is broken into sections that can be poems or prose. However, the format itself is very limited, because Not only there is no support for complex layout and formulas, but also banal things like labeled lists.

There is an idea of \u200b\u200bFB3 format, improved FB2, judging by the description of the ePub format that is a clone. It uses a similar zip archive and separating files to a description, text and pictures. Dmitry Mushroomov is intensively working on a new format and we hope that he will delight authors with new features.

This format is well suited for simple fiction written in Russian.

About TXT format

About Mobi format

Mobi format has several varieties in the formats of AZW, characterized by a higher degree of data compression.

  • AZW1 is another name for the format "Topaz" (also called.tpz). This type is designed to store scanned documents and looks like DJVU. TPZ format - used in the Whispernet network. Whispernet is a special cellular 3G network, which was created by Amazon to support Kindle books and synchronization of books, bookmarks, etc.
  • AZW3 is another name for KF8. This format first appeared for Kindle Fire. It is a combined EPUB format with Palm database, AMAZON DRM protection, almost copying all EPUB format features and providing compatibility with old Kindle readers.
  • AZW4 is a special format for textbooks (similar to PDF).
  • AZK is a special version of Mobi format under iOS for Kindle Reader and other Apple products.
  • KFX is one of the relatively new formats from Amazon, which appeared simultaneously with Kindle Paperwhite 3. Is the AZK heir. It has been added to it such as playing sounds and video, displaying tables on a separate screen, added a new font and image format JXR.
  • AZW8 is an extension for KFX, which is another special format currently at Kindle Paperwhite 3, Kindle Oasis and Kindle Voyage. Currently this is the most advanced format and is used in modern devices from Amazon.

About PDF format

About DJVU format

DJVU - Lizardtech format, which is increasingly used for scientific publications. The main purpose of this format is the storage of scanned images containing text and relatively simple graphics. Its main characteristics are that the compression ratio is about 10 times better than in format.pdf with the same quality. Nothing compares with this now for black and white text and images. Most likely, in it, you will meet such magazines as a radio or constructor modelist, their old versions are practically not available in other formats, because most of the old magazines are ordinary scanned images. In order for it to work in it, add a special invisible layer with the text obtained using text recognition systems (OCR). For e-books, this format is completely unsuitable because it cannot be adapted for devices with a small screen, and many readers do not support it.

About Doc, DOCX format

These are the usual text documents created in the Word Editor from Microsoft Office. They can be edited, change fonts and design. This format is supported by a very narrow list of devices and programs due to the very high complexity and closedness of the format, plus very often can not be correctly displayed. The format is suitable as a draft for a book, but unacceptable for distribution.

About Epub format

The only officially recognized world community (international forum on digital publications) format of e-books. Supports almost everything you can dream of: complex formatting, lists, tables, formulas, footnotes, raster and vector images, various layout modes and DRM copyright protection.

There are quite a few programs for creating e-books in the above formats, we also developed a specialized decision for the authors.

I like everyone's reader for smartphone tablets Cool Reader, but recently it has become recently to re-establish important parameters for me when resetting the device. And even accidental press switches the scroll mode into the scroll mode.

On the smartphone, convenient navigation plays a big role. Rewind, sampling, selection of text - this should be carried out in a convenient way. I do not have a big hand, but by 5.5» smartphone in some readers hit the right place with your finger very difficult. And I read a lot, the benefit is generally very worthy batteries that you can just read the week.

Of course, for me Cool Reader is the best reader, but I wanted something simpler and more convenient "out of the box." I want to introduce you a review - a comparison of readers for e-books FB2 formats, EPUB and others. Go.

Comparison of Universal Readers for Cool Reader Books with EBOOX, Readera, FBReader, Moon + Reader

For testing, chose several readers:

I assume that all the readers support formats.txt, .epub, .fb2. Evaluate the programs for reading e-books I will be in such parameters:

  1. The first impression and how easy it is to figure out how to manage.
  2. Brightness control, navigation
  3. Quick access to functionality
  4. Fast allocation
  5. Setting the visibility of books in case they are in different folders. For example, in the book folder and the download folder.

So, I will say that I immediately installed and I like everything in any application. As in the status of girls - everything is difficult. Let's see where it is difficult, and where even more difficult.

Cool Reader. - Monster among the readers. I can do everything and even more. The minus of this monster is by chance that the configuration turns into a quest quest quest. If you take this app as a reference, then the following is all easier.

The reader has libraries, split the screen to assign gestures with a long and short press, reading offline voice (rather decent). The day / night mode is present and there is everything you need and even more. Books search is not very convenient, through folders, but you can hide automatically directory without books.

The annex ancient interface is already annoying, but the application is the best set of functionality, for which I love it.

My rating: 5-for some confused settings, difficulty with the allocation mode (you must first configure or go through the menu) and the old-fashioned interface.

Reader eBOOX NEW. It has a pleasant interface. Intuitively understand almost everything. The toolkit is minimal - several online book directories, their libraries on the device, synchronization with the Google Books account and that's it.

Add books, folders with books by pressing a plus log button. The application does not grow together by the smartphone independently in search of books.

Management is minimal. Settings are enough. Access to most through the menu. The minus called finely rewind control and no transition to a specific page. Application settings are sufficient and intuitive. Calling the settings - tap (by pressing) in the center of the screen. It is convenient to allocate and share the text fragment. Brightness is controlled through the menu, not a gesture on the screen. In addition to bookmarks, you can store quotes, which is very convenient. You can synchronize with other devices through the Google account.

My rating: 4+for thought, healthy minimalism. You can not add cloud storage, alas.

- similar to EBOOX new reader for books.

The application knows how to scan directory, allows you to control the gesture brightness, all important functions are at a distance of two clicks from any page. Lt. as in the previous application: the left side of the screen - back, right - forward, center - settings.

My rating: 4 ++for thought, healthy minimalism. You can not add cloud storage, alas. But there is scanning.

One of the most famous applications boasts settings comparable by quantity with COOL Readera settings.

An interesting chip, which does not have other applications - sending a book to a friend. Your book in the form of a file.epub or one click is sent in the messenger or in the social network dialogue.

My rating: 4+for the lack of scanning and bookshelf (there is in the paid version).

Another famous application - Moon + Reader.

The application resembles EBOOX: Reader books FB2 EPUB and READERA - reader for books. There is a bookshelf, but a lot of advertising. The menu is organized from several blocks, which is not very convenient. Wide functionality in this case only a hindrance.

According to the results of acquaintance with applications, I decided to leave myself readera and I will use them instead of Cool Readera. Let's see what happens.

Lovers of literature often encounter a problem when the downloaded file does not open, because its encoding is not supported by the device. To avoid this, let's understand what format books for Android will be suitable and most convenient during reading.

What are the formats of books for Android

Consider what e-book formats support each device based on android. Here is the list of the most popular extensions:

  • ePUB,
  • tIFF
  • djvu.

Each format has actually its advantages and disadvantages that we will touch below.

This extension is based on XML technology, while developed by domestic programmers. The format is extremely popular in Russia and the CIS countries, but actually few people have heard about it in more distant abroad. Readers choose FB2 due to the following advantages:

  • Text document of this type is easy to structure (add data about the author, content, annotation and content);
  • Support illustrations and images. Editions in FB2 format have a cover and pictures along the narration (if any);

  • Such a book will not take much space. At the same time, the only format that can compete with FB2 for this indicator is TXT;
  • Simple navigation and fast movement via pages;
  • There are preset design options.

Files with extension FB2 are often distributed as ZIP archives. So they take less space on the device. Most of the "readers" open books directly from the archived source, which is also the advantage of the FRICTION BOOK.

Epub.

The main competitor of Friction Book in the domestic market - EPUB. Functional is a little different from the format described above. It also presents support for illustrations, text structure, quick transition through pages and other integral qualities of good e-book. Epub rarely extends to zip-files, because In itself, the extension is an archive containing text with different markings. This significantly saves a place in Internet storage and user devices.

In which of these two formats download e-books for your Android device - exclusively your choice. FB2 and EPUB are supported by any "reader", while you are unlikely to see the differences between them during the reading process.

MOBI.

The format was developed by the French company Mobipocket on request Amazon. Mobi is used in all applications and by Amazon, so the circle of its use is very limited. However, the format is not inferior to EPU and FB2 by functionality, so it is often offered as the only one available when downloading the book. Supported by almost all applications.

RTF, TXT, DJVU and other extensions

Such extensions are usually used for highly specialized literature or in cases where the use of other type files is simply impossible. For example, DJVU is scanned or photographed book pages translated into an accessible form using this encoding. Before downloading files with such extensions, make sure that they are "on the teeth" of your program. Due to its specificity, the books of this type are not always supported by the "readers" on the phones.

Books reading books

After you figured out, in which format it is necessary to download e-books and text files on Android, it has time to select the utility to start. Here is a list of the most popular reading programs:

  • CoolReader. It can boast the wide range of supported extensions (FB2, EPUB, TXT, DOC, RTF, HTML, CHM, TSR, RDB, PRC, MOBI, PML). The program is easy to manage, while it is extremely convenient for reading any text documents;

  • FBReader. It differs from CoolReader design style and a "lightweight" interface;

FBReader is a free open source application, so it understands only open formats. This means that if you have a book, protected by DRM (simply speaking, encrypted by the manufacturer), then FBReader will not be able to open it.

  • epub. We consider EPUs as one of the three main formats. (Two others - fB2. and mOBI..) FBReader processes all the main features of EPUB, except for tables. CSS formatting is partially supported.
  • epub 3. FBReader does not support almost no new features of EPUB 3. We will gradually add the most common of them, but the entire standard of EPUB 3 is too large and we do not plan to support it entirely in the foreseeable future.
  • fB2. From a practical point of view, format 2.0 is fully supported. In version 2.1, tables appeared, FBReader does not understand them. On the other hand, as far as we know, real books in FB2 2.1 do not exist.
  • Mobi (Books Kindle, AZW3). FBReader opens the unencrypted books * .Mobi Files. For encrypted books, you can search for information about how to turn them into unencrypted. We are not confident in the legality of such a transformation.
  • PDF.
    • Android: Starting with version 2.0, FBReader opens books in PDF format using
    • Other PDF platforms are currently not supported.
  • Djvu.
    • Android: Starting from version 2.1, FBReader opens books in DJVU format using an optional module (plug-in). For drawing, a third-party library is used, so the appearance is somewhat different from the appearance of books opened by the main program.
    • Other DJVU platforms are currently not supported.
  • HTML.. Strictly speaking, this is not an electronic book format. FBReader does not claim to use as a web browser, but supports some minimal subset of HTML, allowing you to read most of the books we encountered.
  • Text files. Supported. There may be problems with splitting text to paragraphs.
  • rTF, Doc (Microsoft Word). FBReader opens relatively simple * .rtf and * .doc files. For reading artistic books, this is usually enough.
  • Plucker
    • On other platforms, it is supported, but the formatting commands in Plucker are designed for the screens of certain permissions, so that the result is not always good on modern devices.
  • CHM.
    • Android: currently not supported.
    • Other platforms. The full open description of this format does not exist, different Open-Source libraries support different sets of features. CHM support in FBReader is written regardless of standard libraries like chmlib, so the mapping may differ quite strongly.
  • .Lit.. The format is not supported and will not be supported. Microsoft Reader no longer exists, so that new books in format. Lit will not. We do not want to spend strength to support obsolete formats. At the same time, the legality of reading such files by third-party programs remains in question, and we have no desire to discuss her with lawyers Microsoft. You can use the program.
