Katerina sincerely loves and regrets her husband. She cannot indifferently look at his humiliation before the mother. But it is unable to fix something. The stuffy atmosphere, reigning in the city, gradually seizes it. Katerina unconsciously wants to escape from her.

Catherine's mental drama is that in other conditions she would never go to betrayal to her husband. But in this "sleepy kingdom" she is too closely, she chips from such a lifetime. In the famous monologue of the main heroine "Why people do not fly" is the most pronounced this spiritual desire. A fantastic desire to become a bird and flutter "far, far" is a passionate impulse of the exhausted soul.

In reality, the liberation of Katerina happened as a result of sudden love for Boris. The decency of the woman did not allow her to openly talk about it. The rapprochement occurred with the assistance of the barbarium. Roman with Boris, on the one hand, wondered Katerina, allowed her to feel the real pleasure of life. On the other hand, this novel became disastrous for the main heroine.

The image of Katerina is extremely tragic. It can not be considered a fallen woman who betrayed her husband for the sake of fleeting passion. Treason occurred about the fault of the old woman who survived the mind and her brown son. The time spent without a husband flashed as a moment. Katerina anticipates inevitable rules for his terrible sin. She could easily hide all this, but, being deeply believer, does not even allow thoughts about deception.

The spiritual confusion of Katerina exacerbates with the arrival of Tikhon. She lives accurately in delight, scaring around their behavior and words. Katerina is waiting for Divine Caras for his sinful behavior. The feeling of imminent death leads her to terrible recognition in front of her husband and his mother. Having confessed to sin, she seems to clean his soul before death. Katerina's suicide is a regular outcome of the work. Her spiritual drama could not resolve otherwise.

Katerina is an excellent sample of a strong spiritual personality. She is not to blame in treason, nor in his own death. Ostrovsky convincingly showed what destructive impact on the soul of man outdated concepts and prejudices. Catherine's spiritual drama is indicative for any historic era.
