In June, artist Max Goshko-Dankov will carry his painting wall around the world: he will visit Harbin, Luxembourg and Zagreb. The size of the art object is impressive - three by four meters, but the main feature is that the author painted it with decorative painting only half, the rest of it needs to be completed by the audience. In fact, this is a collective performance, where everyone contributes to the creation of the work. In 2016, large painting walls first appeared in Kamergersky Lane, but they have been around the world for about four years. Exactly so much time has passed since Max Goshko-Dankov quit doing PR and went on a free voyage. We talked with the artist about the difficulties of a cardinal change of profession and the meanings of creativity.

Start

I started painting when I was 12, I even graduated from art school. But in my youth I never seriously studied art, it always went parallel to my main activity. I moved from Smolensk to Moscow in 2002. I entered the magistracy at the Faculty of Journalism, where I studied French and English, now I know them perfectly. During his studies, he was engaged in political PR for some time, was an assistant to several Frenchmen. After graduation, he became a PR specialist in the beauty fashion sphere and remained in it until he was 33 years old. And then it dawned on me that I didn't want to do any more commerce or PR. I understood that all the time I was doing what my heart did not lie to. I was grossly distorted, and I went nowhere. That was four years ago. From my savings I had 350 thousand rubles, but from this money I also had to pay for the mortgage (82 thousand rubles a month). My finances were running out quickly. I didn't know anyone in the art world then, there was an ocean in front of me: swim wherever you want. I made a bet on the West, as there is no grateful art market in Russia. And he made the right decision.

Professional background as the main assistant

I wouldn’t have become an artist if there was no commercial background. For example, I am not afraid to declare myself and stand out, because there is a clear rule - water does not flow under a lying stone. An artist in the modern world needs to be super active in order to become even noticeable. At the moment, I only choose those projects that I like. And before agreeing to a job, I say to myself: “Max, have you completely changed your life in order to do now everything that you are offered? No, you changed your life in order to do in the first place what you are interested in, what you feel. " I work more now than ever because I do it for myself.

Own handwriting

So far, I am not a media person, I am not recognized by my face, and I don’t need it. I am very niche. I quite clearly understand why I am doing art - to express myself. I don't follow trends. I started to make decorative, because I wanted to and that's it. Since childhood, I loved small drawing: first b / w, then I began to score with color. And I always tried to make organics - this is when you have no idea to draw something specific. I sit down at a painting, I don’t know what colors I’ll use, I don’t know where my hand will go, how crooked the lines will be. I trust this organic story, and my hand always tells me what to do. Likewise, out of nowhere, I got the idea to paint. I needed her. I can't explain why, I made it first of all for myself. But globally, it must calm, pacify. Everyone chooses a color for her, decides whether to drive behind the lines or not, and every action is a frustration. And all because no one really knows himself, what he wants. My global task is to help people think about the questions for five minutes: “Who am I? What I like?". We do not hear ourselves in the eternal wheel: home, work, family, plus endless negativity that rushes from all sides. When people look at my bright works, they take a break from problems, and at the same time understand themselves. Nobody has ever drawn obscene words on my city coloring pages, and there can be no question of vandalism. The only time they wrote nasty things on my works was the cultural forum in the Manezh!

No idols!

I have no problem with inspiration because I am so afraid of idolatry. I want to stew in myself and give out an individual product, without the top of my favorite artists and a selection of the best museums. I see a lot of opportunists who travel to exhibitions, see what is in trend and begin to do everything under this oil. It doesn't work, you need to create trends yourself, create something that the world has not yet seen. When I started the project of large coloring pages, it turned out that no one had done this before me, and I did not even know about it. I was the first peasant artist who created an art coloring book not only in Russia, but also in Europe. At least that's what the publisher said.

Stories in Pictures by Maxim Goshko

Wild Forest, 2010

The world of imaginary animals and plants; what is impossible to see with the naked eye is now available to the eye ... just take a closer look. Drawing with sexual connotations.

Columbus Square, 2010

One of the most famous squares in Manhattan, a kind of zero kilometer in New York, attracted attention not by the Columbus monument, but by the clumsy matryoshka statues symbolizing Spanish women in national costumes ... find them in the picture.

Volcano or Deep-eyed Forest, 2010

On March 21, 2010, Europe was enveloped in ash clouds, the reason for this was the awakened volcano near the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. This drawing is dedicated to him: clouds of smoke, eyes of a crater, immersed in the darkness of the city and endless chaos. Drawing with sexual connotations.

Hearts, 2010

According to one version, the symbol of the heart appeared in ancient Rome, according to the other - much later, thanks to a pair of swans swimming towards each other against the background of a bright red sunset. In any case, the heart symbolizes loyalty, devotion and dedication ...

The Man Eating Fish, 2010

In the alchemical tradition, the fish is interpreted as a symbol of mystical rebirth, mystery and silence. A man who devours a fish opens a new path for his thoughts and desires, is reborn into a supernova. It was this drawing that became the logo of our brand ...

Russian Flower, 2010

Russian Flower is a tribute to the traditions of Russian patterns. Before you is not just a drawing, but a collective image: yellow chamomile inflorescences on clay pots and nesting dolls, greenery of endless fields, cornflower petals in a bouquet and scarlet roses, the main characters of Russian romances ...
