Grace, it's no secret that you studied in Moscow. Were you good years?

(in Russian) Yes, I studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory and lived in a hostel. And it was very interesting (laughs and switches to English). Living in a hostel was both weird and wonderful at the same time. Music played there 24 hours a day. As a result, I lived in Moscow for 2.5 years, met a bunch of wonderful musicians and still fondly remember that amazing time.

So every time you come back to us as an international star, a wave of nostalgia hits you?

Of course! By the way, I just realized that it was a long time since you visited. Jack and I first came to Moscow about ten years ago. He studied at VGIK and worked at the Tretyakov Gallery: he organized exhibitions. We filmed our first video, "Mozart" s House "in Moscow in that insanely hot summer of 2010, when everyone left the city because of the smog. ...

And we can say that it was this video that started our career. At that time we already had some recordings posted on the network, but no one listened to them. And the video suddenly went off, and our songs started playing on BBC radio. So we have very important memories associated with this video.

I know that you are generally serious about filming videos. In the new video "I Miss You" you did a real fire show. How did you agree to this?

Initially, we did not plan to shoot anything like that in the video. But already on the set, Julia Michaels (whose voice sounds in the song - the author) said that she knows how to twist a hoop. And I was always attracted to circus tricks, and I thought: it would be so cool to shoot Julia spinning a hoop, standing on a piano in the middle of the desert.

And when the shooting was over, I decided that I myself would like to show some kind of trick. And now, after a couple of weeks in England, we finished shooting the scene where I turn the fireworks. As a teenager, I often went to psychedelic raves, where I learned how to do it. And I thought that I would remember everything with ease. It was not so! In the first take, I fired a fire straight into my head and burned a bun of my hair. A terrible commotion immediately began, but I was not going to stop, and we still filmed the scene. And, in my opinion, it turned out quite convincingly.

What other secret talents do you have? Or won't you show all your cards yet?

Oh, you can't tell right away. Here is Jack and Luke skateboarding. I think they need to demonstrate this in the video somehow.

I would not call myself a singer. I like to sing, but against the background of powerful voices that are usually heard on Clean Bandit recordings, my voice will sound like a whisper. Although that “my” song “Come Over” is still one of my favorites.

Truth?! I don’t know anything about Russian hip-hop yet, can you tell us more? I have always adored Zemfira, it would be great to record something with her. And when we lived in Russia, Jack and I liked the UmaTurman group, do they still perform? They were very funny guys!

We will hand over everything to them. For now, let's talk about the tour. You take that gorgeous mirrored cello from the I Miss You video on tour, don't you?

I seem to take it. There is only one problem: it is all pasted over with a mirror mosaic, which makes it wildly heavy. To be honest, I don't know if you can take her on board.

Speaking of touring. How do you generally monitor your health?

I started practicing Ashtanga yoga a couple of months ago. I like that it can be done anywhere: in a hotel, and even at the airport. And no gym is needed, the main thing is to remember the order of asanas. It is also good for both body and mind.

Excerpt from Clean Bandit

- And you're still afraid! Eh you, learned people, - said the third courageous voice, interrupting both. - Then you, artillerymen, are very learned because you can take everything with you, and vodka and snacks.
And the owner of the courageous voice, apparently an infantry officer, laughed.
“And you're still afraid,” the first familiar voice continued. - Afraid of the unknown, that's what. Say what you like, that the soul will go to heaven ... after all, we know that there is no sky, but there is only one sphere.
Again a courageous voice interrupted the artilleryman.
“Well, treat the herbalist to yours, Tushin,” he said.
“Ah, this is the same captain who stood at the storekeeper without boots,” thought Prince Andrey, gladly recognizing his pleasant philosophizing voice.
- A grass-root can, - said Tushin, - but all the same to comprehend the future life ...
He didn't finish. At this time a whistle was heard in the air; nearer, nearer, faster and more audible, more audible and faster, and the core, as if not having finished speaking everything that was needed, exploding splashes with superhuman force, splashed into the ground not far from the booth. The ground seemed to gasp from a terrible blow.
At the same instant, the first to jump out of the booth was little Tushin with a pipe bitten on its side; his kind, intelligent face was somewhat pale. Behind him came the owner of a courageous voice, a brave infantry officer, and ran to his company, buttoning up his buttons as he ran.

Prince Andrey stopped on horseback on the battery, looking at the smoke of the cannon, from which the cannonball flew out. His eyes were widespread. He saw only that the formerly immobile masses of the French were swaying, and that there really was a battery to the left. The smoke has not yet cleared on it. Two French horsemen, probably adjutants, galloped up the mountain. Downhill, probably to strengthen the chain, a clearly visible small column of the enemy was moving. The smoke of the first shot had not yet cleared, as another smoke and a shot appeared. The battle has begun. Prince Andrew turned his horse and galloped back to Grunt to look for Prince Bagration. Behind him, he heard the cannonade grow louder and more frequent. Apparently, ours were beginning to answer. Below, in the place where the envoys were passing, rifle shots were heard.
Lemarrois (Le Marierois) with a formidable letter from Bonaparte had just galloped to Murat, and the ashamed Murat, wanting to make amends for his mistake, immediately moved his troops to the center and bypassing both flanks, hoping even before the evening and before the arrival of the emperor to crush the insignificant who stood in front of him, squad.
"Started! Here it is!" thought Prince Andrew, feeling how the blood more often began to rush to his heart. “But where is it? How will my Toulon put it? " he thought.
Passing between the same mouths that ate porridge and drank vodka a quarter of an hour ago, he saw everywhere the same rapid movements of the soldiers building up and taking apart guns, and on all their faces he recognized the feeling of animation that was in his heart. "Started! Here it is! Scary and fun! " spoke the face of every soldier and officer.
Before reaching the fortification under construction, he saw in the evening light of a cloudy autumn day, riding towards him. The front-line soldier, in a burka and a cap with straps, rode a white horse. It was Prince Bagration. Prince Andrew stopped, waiting for him. Prince Bagration suspended his horse and, recognizing Prince Andrey, nodded his head to him. He continued to look ahead while Prince Andrew spoke to him what he saw.
Expression: “it's started! here it is!" there was even on the strong brown face of Prince Bagration with half-closed, dull, as if sleepy eyes. Prince Andrey gazed with restless curiosity at this motionless face, and he wanted to know if he was thinking and feeling, and what he was thinking, what was this man feeling at that moment? "Is there anything at all behind this motionless face?" Prince Andrew asked himself, looking at him. Prince Bagration bowed his head, in agreement with the words of Prince Andrey, and said: "Good", with such an expression as if everything that happened and what he was told was exactly what he had already foreseen. Prince Andrew, puffed up by the speed of the ride, spoke quickly. Prince Bagration pronounced the words with his oriental accent especially slowly, as if suggesting that there was nowhere to rush. He started, however, at a trot on his horse in the direction of Tushin's battery. Prince Andrew, along with his retinue, went after him. They were following Prince Bagration: a retinue officer, the prince's personal adjutant, Zherkov, an orderly, an officer on duty on an englised beautiful horse, and a state official, an auditor who, out of curiosity, asked to go to battle. The auditor, a plump man with a full face, looked around with a naive smile of joy, shaking on his horse, imagining a strange sight in his camlot overcoat on a furshtat saddle among the hussars, Cossacks and adjutants.

The night before, the Tsvetnoy department store hosted a concert of British electronics engineers, winners of this year's Grammy, whose work is closely associated with Russia. We caught them right before the first solo concert in Moscow and found out how they became popular so quickly.

In 2013, Clean Bandit released the track Mozart "s House, which was ranked 17th inUK Singles Chart, in 2014 - the single Rather Be, which took first place in the same chart. And in 2015 the composition was awarded a Grammy in the nomination« Best Dance Recording».

The history of the group in which the participants gatheredstring quartet from Cambridge, started in 2009. Surprisingly, some members of the team have an important part of their lives connected with Moscow: Grace Chatto studiedplaying the cello at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, andJack Patterson - operator at VGIK. In short, it was from here that the name of the group came - "pure bandit", here the first video for the song was filmed.Mozart's House, and in general, the influence of Russia has greatly influenced the work Clean Bandit. The group's compositions always have strong vocal parts, violin and cello sound. What seemed at first unattainable to young musicians became real in 2015.

Last year you became one of the best music groups in the world and received a Grammy. Were you ready for this?

Grace: At that time, our group was 7 years old and we dreamed of going on tours and traveling, but we certainly did not expect an award. Billions of people around the world listen to different music, thousands and thousands of songs - and suddenly we get a Grammy. It was just crazy to find out about it.

Jack: Yes, it was very strange to go to this for so many years.

I know that when you lived in Moscow, you were inspired by Russian house music coming from the tents. What inspires you now?

Grace: We often heard this kind of music on Gorbushka, and we even liked it. Now we prefer variety: classical, rock, modern music. Still, of course, travel plays an important role. Recently we were on a music tour in Japan and at the same time decided to recreate our documentary, which was filmed many years ago when we were vacationing there. Moreover, Jack is directing all our clips and videos himself, and it was not that difficult.

What contemporary musicians do you like?

Jack: I listen to modern jazz, I like it when there is a lot of saxophone. This is probably because I make pop music myself every day.

Grace: We love both Disclosure and James Blake. We even played together with Disclosure a few years ago. It's hard to say who else you like, because there are so many different artists around, playing in a variety of styles.

Have you thought about collaborating with other musicians?

Jack: In fact, each of our tracks is a collaboration with different artists. We would like to do a joint project with musicians from Asia. It would be cool.

Grace: We also do remixes, made tracks with Gorgon City, Jess Glenn, performed with Marina & The Diamonds.

When will the track with Marina & The Diamonds come out?

Grace: We don't know yet, just recording vocals. I would like to process the material as soon as possible, we have a lot of accumulated tracks, and we are trying to finish everything.

I know Jack is directing your music videos. How do you work? Who is responsible for what?

Jack: Grace and I are producers.

Grace: Jack shoots all our videos, and helps with editing and other technical things of his classmates from VGIK - Dasha Novitskaya and Anna Patarakina. They are operators with Jack.

Describe your music in a few words.

Jack: (Laughs.) In Russian? It's complicated! Dancing, funny, melancholic and a little contrasting.

What are your plans for the near future?

Jack: To release the next album, do some tours, complete all recordings and finish producing them.

Where do you go after Moscow?

Grace: For quite a long time we will tour America with Duran Duran, then Asia in December.

During the Big Love Show concert at the Olimpiyskiy Sports Complex, which is held annually by Love Radio, OK! spoke with Grace and Neil, two soloists of the British group Clean bandit.

Clean Bandit released their first single just a few years ago, but today they are already the winner of the Grammy award for the best dance track - Rather Be. They are not the first to use a mixture of classical and electronic music, but perhaps one of the few who did it so organically. The British quartet Clean Bandit, oddly enough, has a close relationship with Russia. The unspoken leader of the "pure bandits", pink-haired Grace Chatto, speaks excellent Russian - she lived for several years in the Russian capital, studying classical music at the conservatory. According to her, Moscow has had a huge impact on the work of their team, in which a mix of completely different directions is heard.

First of all, I would like to congratulate you on the Grammy statuette. I wonder if the awards inspire you?

Grace: It really came as a big surprise to us. It was so great to know that so many people loved our song. We ourselves were betting that the Disclosure duo would win.

Neil: Of course awards are nice, but we don't write music for them. We just love what we do, and the prizes give us inspiration to work further.

We know that Russia has inspired you and continues to inspire you. Grace, why did you decide to come to study with us?

To begin with, I studied Russian at school, so I knew a little about Russian culture - I was always very interested in it. And I also had a wonderful cello teacher, who advised me to go to study in Russia after graduation. I listened to his advice and happily agreed.

How would you describe Moscow in three words?

M.G .: Big, beautiful and crazy.

Regarding the madness, what impressed you the most in Moscow?

M.G .: Metro! It is more than just transportation, it is art! All these mosaics, chandeliers ... And it works much better than in England. And from the Russian cuisine we were impressed by the soups. Borscht is something!

Your first video clip, for the song Mozart's House, was filmed in Moscow. What did your friends say when they saw him?

M.G .: They liked it, but many did not even guess that this was Moscow. After all, most Englishmen think that there is always snow in Russia, and we filmed this video in the hot summer of 2010, when there was smog in Moscow from forest fires.

You speak excellent Russian! What word in Russian did you find funny?

M.G .: Oh, that's our name! When we heard the phrase “well, just a clean thug,” we laughed a lot, because the word “clean” is used here as a synonym for the word “absolute”, but in English there is no such meaning, there is only “not dirty”. We found it very interesting. It's true. ( He laughs.)

How did you get the idea to relate this phrase to your music?

M.G .: In fact, this name does not refer to music anymore, but to the people in the group.

That is, if I understand correctly, you are the very “absolute bandit”?

G.: ( Laughs.) Exactly!

N: And I agree with that. Because she always knows what she wants.

Your team is distinguished not only by the musical component, but also by the video sequence. Who is the author of the ideas for your video clips?

M.G .: The video is a credit to one of our team members, Jack, who, unfortunately, was unable to attend the interview. He studied at VGIK, so he is the one who shoots and directs everything. Well, he also offers all sorts of crazy ideas ...

N: ... and Grace implements them. She's kind of like a producer in that regard.

Can you argue with Jack?

M.G .: It is impossible to argue with him! He simply does not accept the fact that there is something unrealizable in this world. ( Laugh.)

But your logo - a composition of a rhombus, triangle, square and circle - is not at all a gangster ... What does it mean?

N: This is a design of four stringed instruments in electronic form. We started out as a string quartet, with wooden instruments, but we wanted to make unusual electronic versions of them. As a result, we got such a design in the form of a diamond-shaped cello and a square violin. We never made them in reality, but maybe in the future ...

That would be an interesting piece of the image! In your opinion, can a carefully calibrated image help an artist become more popular?

M.G .: Probably it can. But this is not our story. We don’t really think about our clothes or hairstyles at all - if we are talking about appearance. For example, I recently changed my hair color from light blond to pink, but I did it just like that, for no reason. But, oddly enough, they began to recognize me less often on the street!

On February 14th, you were a member of the Big Love Show. Why did you agree to perform at this particular venue?

N.: We were very pleased to perform at the show dedicated to Valentine's Day. And we happily congratulated all lovers on the holiday, without exception.

Would you like to work with any of the Russian artists?

M.G .: With Zemfira. We haven't talked about it yet, but I would love to record a song with her.

In the media, your style is often called "baroque house". Do you agree with this definition?

M.G .: Not really. The concept of "baroque" is attributed to us, probably, simply because of the presence in our music of the sounds of violin and cello. But in general, our disc is a mixture of various styles.

N: We are closer to the definition of "electronic chamber music". But I would call it all just pop music.

How do you like Dostoevsky from Disco? This is the first time you have been called that by The Guardian.

M.G .: Oh yes, we really like this! I love Dostoevsky's work, I read Crime and Punishment and The Idiot.

That is, if we write that you are "Dostoevsky from disco", will you not be offended?

N: No! On the contrary, we will happily agree to another interview in the future!
