A new reading of the story of Kai and Gerda
The famous tale of the legendary Danish writer, written in the 19th century, remains one of the best creations for little ones to this day. Without it, it is difficult to imagine celebrating the New Year. This is exactly what the directors and the entire circus collective of the Zapashnykh thought!
This year, the Circus of Famous Brothers decided to rethink the Andersen fairy tale, familiar from childhood.
It tells the story of an evil sorceress who kidnapped the boy Kai so that his heart, which turned into a piece of ice, would stop loving.
The performance entitled "The Snow Queen" at the Bolshoi Moscow Circus, located on Vernadsky Avenue, will delight all lovers of circus art, young and old.
It will be an enchanting show about true friendship, courage, valor, nobility and honor - all those human qualities that are not afraid of any insidious obstacles.
Askold and Edgard Zapashny, numerous circus artists, the developers of the Russian animation franchise of the same name, have gloriously worked on the creation of a large-scale action.
The old-old tale of good and evil
The well-known story will appear before audiences small and large in a completely new light. It will consist of a number of dizzying circus acts: Gerda's adventures, her meetings with various heroes, a sleigh ride of Kai and the Snow Queen. Viewers will see:

- magnificent acrobatic and illusion performances;
- trained animals.

The very first scene begins like this.
In the arena, we see the red-tiled roofs of houses. One window is wide open. There is a beautiful rose in a pot. There is a fluorescent yellow crescent under the dome. Ole Lukkoye appears. Then Kai and Gerda come out. By the way, they are not just artists, but also trapeze artists, and in front of our eyes they soar high up, and in one issue Kai throws down golden stars, a picture of stargazing is obtained. A magical sight!

All together creates a dizzying effect of being in the Fairy Tale.

Remember when Gerda left home in search of Kai and ended up with the Old Flower Girl in the marvelous garden?
Here it is done SO that I even forgot that I was in the circus. Scarlet stripes of silk, a gorgeous gymnast, below there are artists with huge roses on their heads, giant petals are scattered around the arena. Something surreal, in the spirit of Salvador Dali, and something like a Venetian carnival! Unbelievably beautiful!
Room with polar bears- ohh, great! unique! The prelude was intriguing. First, they unrolled and raised the ring from the net around the arena. Then slowly, slowly, the ice rink began to rise instead of the stage. For some reason it was scary! White bears are exactly like on wrappers of famous Moscow sweets! Skating trainers. Polar bears, by the way, do not lend themselves to training, they are predators, but as the tamers say: "You can negotiate with them."
The number with polar bears is called "Northern Lights", and we will see him (Aurora Borealis) in the form of pulsating light flashes under the dome, and there will also be Laplanders in fur coats, beating tambourines!

The scene in the royal castle, where Gerda came at the prompting of the crows. What beautiful costumes and curled wigs the royal subjects - acrobats! The king in a real tiara and a red robe with a white trim is a funny chimpanzee, you can laugh at the way he behaved at the table.))
In the scene at the robbers we were shocked horse riding... Hurricane! What a skill! What good fellows! Real robbers!
And I have not yet told about adorable dogs, clubfoot bears, acrobats on horses, acrobats on throw-up boards!
Do not be confused by the name of the show "The Snow Queen" and the thought that it should be watched only in winter. This is not so, this is stereotypical thinking! The Great Moscow State Circus on Vernadsky Avenue is the largest stationary circus in Europe. The capacity of the auditoriums is over 3,300 seats, the height of the dome is 26 meters. It has five fast-changing arenas - equestrian, ice, water, illusion and light.
The circus building belongs to the style of artistic functionalism. The offices of the circus are completely hidden, and the townspeople see a tent under a folded dome, glazed around the entire circumference. The design of the dome was developed by engineers G. Krivin and A. Levenshtein. The dome consists of 24 metal folds with a cantilever, each weighing 30 tons. The idea of constructing removable arenas belongs to Georgy Khromov (Honored Builder of Russia, laureate of the USSR State Prize). For construction (started in 1964, finished in 1971), a site was chosen at the intersection of Vernadsky and Lomonosovsky prospectus on the Leninsky (Vorobyovy) Hills on the site of a large wasteland dissected by a ravine.
The director of the circus is Edgard Zapashny. Artistic director - Askold Zapashny.

On December 17, on the eve of the New Year holidays, the audience saw the new play "The Snow Queen" for the first time, which promises to become an unprecedented circus project in terms of the number of unique performances. Brothers Zapashnye Companions with each premiere move to a new level of skill, surprising the sophisticated metropolitan audience.
All our circus projects are unique, they are not alike, ”says Edgard Zapashny, general director of the Bolshoi Moscow State Circus. - The brightest scene of this show is the number with polar bears. I should note that this is the only such attraction in the world; there are no polar bears in circuses anymore. And the appearance on the arena of such rare animals as chimpanzees arouses genuine interest among the public, since this is one of the smartest creatures on planet Earth. Also, children took part in this show along with honored artists. They played without fear, performed. The show is not at all like other projects that are now shown to the public. It is distinguished, first of all, by its scale, the ability to come to the show with the whole family. We have tried to make sure that the viewer of any age does not get bored.

We decided to transfer the classic plot of Andersen's fairy tale "The Snow Queen" to the arena. The director and scriptwriter for this project is Yevgeny Shevtsov, - said the artistic director of the Bolshoi Moscow Circus Askold Zapashny. - The Snow Queen is played by Lyudmila Titchenkova - one of the two tall sisters who took part in many of our projects. And this time we decided to use Lyudmila's impressive height to make the Snow Queen spectacular. Kaya and Gerda are played by trainers brother and sister, Oleg and Victoria Alexandrovs.
Everyone remembers from childhood the story of the great Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen about Kai and Gerda, children from very poor families who loved to grow roses on the windowsill, and their friendship was really close, sincere. In the circus on Vernadsky, this tale opens in a new way, and consists of a series of mind-blowing numbers.
This time, the arena of the Bolshoi Moscow Circus becomes a snow-covered city, whose residents are preparing for the New Year holidays. They play snowballs and make snowmen with brown bears. The boy Kai is kidnapped by the Snow Queen and taken to her ice castle. The brave girl Gerda sets out to find him, courageously overcoming dangers and meeting interesting characters on her way.
The well-known fairy tale acquired new characters in the circus production. For example, an ice assistant to the Snow Queen appeared, whose role was brilliantly played by the clown Nikolai Kormiltsev.
Watching the performance, young spectators and their parents find themselves in a real world of wonders, where, thanks to the number with Zoya Barkova's canvases, a garden of flowers comes to life on the arena, where an intelligent chimpanzee becomes a prince, and robbers demonstrate their skills in tricking and acrobatics. Each circus act is organically woven into the touching and kind story of Kai and Gerda.
Of course, the children will especially admire the appearance of four-legged artists. In the show "The Snow Queen" you can see the world's only attraction "Northern Lights" with polar bears on ice under the direction of the Honored Artist of Russia Yulia Denisenko! Polar clubfoots roll with pleasure on the ice and play musical instruments.
Also, a group of brown bears led by Yuri Aleksandrov will show their skills on the arena, horse riders - owners of the Silver Clown in Monte Carlo under the guidance of Honored Artist of Russia Yakov Eck, pole acrobats led by Honored Artist of Russia Maxim Selnikhin, trapeze gymnasts Oleg and Victoria Aleksandrovs and acrobats on throw-up boards under the direction of Anatoly Ruban.
