Yuri Senkevich. Life is like an amazing adventure

Yuri Senkevich. Life is like an amazing adventure

Yuri Senkevich became incredibly popular in the Soviet Union thanks to the Travelers Club television program. As you know, 200 million inhabitants of 1/6 of the land "looked at the world through the eyes of Senkevich."

“Two students are walking along the beach and they see a sign 'For saving drowning people - 50 rubles' ...” - such an anecdote told his fellow travelers Yuri Senkevich in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, when waves as high as a three-story building rose above the giant wall mast. At that moment, a chill ran down the Soviet doctor's spine. And again he asked himself the question - why am I here? But without changing his face, Senkevich said: "And here's another story ...".

It seemed that this smiling and prosperous person was just a darling of fate, whose lot had fallen to the happiness inaccessible to others - to travel freely around the world. But, getting to know his life better, you never cease to wonder how, after all the trials and experiences, he generally retained the ability to joke!

It was this ability of his - to joke under any circumstances and to smile incredibly contagiously - that turned a modest researcher into a TV star, a favorite of a multimillion-dollar Soviet country. It happened when Senkevich himself felt that there was no need to live anymore, because he was unfairly taken away from his dream, to which he had been for many years - a flight into space. For his sake, Dr. Senkevich set up painful experiments on himself, conducted hundreds of surgeries to implant sensors in animals - the first conquerors of space. And for another 300 days he worked in Antarctica at Vostok station - where it is minus 80 in winter and minus 40 in summer. Yuri returned from there without his luxurious head of hair - magnetic fields ...
The meeting with Thor Heyerdahl turned the life of Yuri Senkevich upside down. Both restless and curious, they will be friends to the death of a Norwegian explorer, who said about his Russian friend: "Either he is my eldest son, or my younger brother." In the expedition of Heyerdahl "Ra-1" Senkevich became one of the seven crew members. People of different nationalities, professions and views, randomly gathered together, had to test the theory of Tours - they say that the ancients could swim across the ocean on papyrus boats. And to find out: maybe it was not Columbus who discovered America at all?

On May 25, 1969 "Ra" took off from the Moroccan city of Safi. The tests began in the first hour: the steering oars broke. Due to the improper design of the stern, the boat began to sink into the water. The starboard side was sinking. Ra was essentially just a haystack. On the 50th day of the voyage, the boat was almost completely submerged in the water. It was decided to end the expedition. On the roof of the hut, the seven sailors awaited help for almost five days. As luck would have it, their SOS signal was heard on an American yacht.

The next year, on a different boat - "Ra-2" - Thor Heyerdahl re-assembled the former team. This time, the crew successfully reached the goal: in 57 days, having traveled about six thousand kilometers from Morocco to the coast of Barbados, they proved that even in prehistoric times, Egyptian sailors could travel to the New World. This will not be the last joint voyage. Seven years later, Ra's team, led by Heyerdahl, will sail across the Indian Ocean on the Tigris reed boat.

The film presents unique archival footage of our hero's travels and his work in the studio - they were kindly provided to us by the Thor Heyerdahl Museum in Oslo (Norway) and the Yuri Senkevich Museum in Moscow, as well as his family. Thor Heyerdahl's son and daughter tell about Yuri Alexandrovich in an exclusive interview.

And so Senkevich was invited to the "Film Travel Club" program - to tell about a trip with the most famous Norwegian of the twentieth century, Thor Heyerdahl. And Senkevich, in his usual manner, told how he saved his companions in the middle of the ocean: Heyerdahl from renal colic, and American Baker from the fatal burn of the physalia jellyfish - he simply ordered the entire crew to urinate on the burnt skin of a comrade. The audience was delighted! Central television was inundated with letters - we want Senkevich! And soon Yuri was invited to lead a program, which no other could compare in popularity in those years.

What was the mystery of Yuri Senkevich? Why exactly was his travels so drawn to the screen? It is quite obvious that this is not only a matter of the “iron curtain”, because of which the entire USSR for decades looked at the world “through the eyes of Senkevich”. But also in the very personality of this traveler. What feats remained hidden from prying eyes? What secret did he not want to discuss, even with loved ones? And why the papyrus boat "Tigris", which the crew burned in protest against the war, was destined to have a second life ...

Senkevich was a lucky man. Repeatedly during his numerous expeditions, he was on the verge of death. And each time, conquering death, it seemed to him that he had enough strength to withstand any trials. But in 2002, after the death of his close friend Thor Heirdahl, Yuri Senkevich suffered a heart attack.
Studies have shown: the heart is worn out, you need to undergo surgery, change your lifestyle to a more relaxed one. But Senkevich, himself a hereditary physician, pathophysiologist, harshly cut off all conversations of relatives about treatment.

Yuri Senkevich died at his workplace in the studio of the "Travelers' Club" on September 25, 2003.
