Bakst's exhibition at the Pushkin State Museum is a luxurious start to a museum summer. Passion for Bakst: "Diamond Club" at the exhibition in Pushkin Immersion in context

MOSCOW, June 8. / Corr. TASS Svetlana Yankina /. The exhibition "Lev Bakst. Leon Bakst", which tells about one of the most famous Russian artists of the 20th century, a member of the "World of Art" association and the star of Diaghilev's "Russian Seasons", has opened at the State Museum of Fine Arts. A. S. Pushkin on the 150th anniversary of the birth of the master.

The exhibition is striking in scale: it is difficult to remember any other project that would have occupied two buildings of the Pushkin Museum at once - the main one and the Museum of Private Collections. In the first one you can see sketches for productions of St. Petersburg theaters and "Russian Seasons" in Paris, as well as costumes and products of fashion houses designed by Bakst. The second showcases Bakst's early work and archival materials - from personal correspondence and invoices for the purchase of glasses to the diploma of an officer of the Order of the Legion of Honor.

Immersion in context

Earlier, the Pushkin Museum opened an exhibition of works from the collection of Ilya Zilberstein, which became the basis of the Museum of Private Collections. Two halls with Bakst's exhibition turned out to be, as it were, built into this exposition, where works of contemporaries and friends of the artist - the founder of the "World of Art" Alexander Benois, Valentin Serov, Boris Anisfeld are presented, which makes immersion in the artistic context of the turn of the XIX-XX more complete ...

In the part devoted to Bakst's early work, the large-scale painting "The Meeting of Admiral F. K. Avelan in Paris on October 5, 1893" and the small-sized painting "Bathers on the Lido. Venice" stand out. The artist went to Venice after the triumph of the "Russian Seasons" in Paris and wrote from there: "I bathe at the Lido in the company of Isadora Duncan, Nijinsky, Diaghilev. I bathe up to my throat in aesthetic impressions."

The section with graphic portraits of the turn of the XIX-XX centuries, which depicts the artists Philip Malyavin, Isaac Levitan, Konstantin Somov and Anna Benois, presented right there, seems to link the display of Bakst's works in the Museum of Private Collections and the main building.

If I were a sultan

There, in a separate room, are collected later brilliant portraits of the artist - "Portrait of S. P. Diaghilev with a nanny", "Portrait of Zinaida Gippius" and "Dinner", which depicts the wife of Alexander Benois Anna Kid. One evening in a Parisian cafe she was met by Bakst and Valentin Serov, who worked together on the design of the ballet Scheherazade to the music of N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov.

A curtain based on Serov's sketches for "Scheherazade" was shown recently at his retrospective at the Tretyakov Gallery. Now in the Pushkin Museum you can see Bakst's drawings for this performance, as well as a reconstruction of the dances of the production star, performer of the role of Zobeida Tamara Karsavina - a black-and-white film is shown in the White Hall.

In the center of the exhibition composition there is a podium with historical theatrical costumes from museum collections and private collections, including those from the collection of fashion historian Alexander Vasiliev. The curtain for "Elysium" of 1906 serves as a background for them, and on the walls the works are grouped according to themes: ancient visions, romantic dreams, oriental fantasies. Here you can see bright colors and incredible plasticity of the artist's key works in sketches for "Orpheus", "Firebird", "Narcissus", "Afternoon of a Faun".

Many of them are well known, they have been exhibited and published, but even if only using the example of a selection of sketches for the ballet "Sleeping Beauty" to music by PI Tchaikovsky, one can see how many resources had to be used to put together this large-scale exhibition.

Thus, the sketch for the Good Fairy costume came from the private collection of Nina Lobanova-Rostovskaya, and the Rowan Fairy - from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. How these costumes looked on the dancers for whom they were created can be seen here in black and white archival photographs.

Undoubtedly, the attention of the audience will be attracted by the costume of Vaslav Nijinsky from the ballet "The Vision of a Rose" by the thoroughness and preservation of the petals, as well as the fabulous panel "Awakening" based on the "Sleeping Beauty". It depicts the happy newlyweds James and Dorothy de Rothschild, who commissioned Bakst in 1913 to decorate their London mansion with a series of panels depicting family members, friends, servants and even pets. Until recently, these works, which are now in the Rothschild estate of Waddesdon Manor, now a museum, were inaccessible even to specialists and are still considered poorly studied.

MOSCOW, June 7 - RIA Novosti, Anna Gorbashova. The grand opening of the large-scale retrospective exhibition "Lev Bakst / Léon Bakst. To the 150th anniversary of his birth" was held on Monday at a full house at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts) as part of the "Cherry Les" festival.

The first guests of the exhibition, which will open to visitors on June 8, were the director of the Tretyakov Gallery Zelfira Tregulova, the singer Kristina Orbakaite, Alena Sviridova, editor-in-chief of L "Officiel Russia magazine Ksenia Sobchak, actress Marina Zudina, financier Mark Garber, TV presenter Irada Zeynalova and other famous cultural figures and show business.

In the "Italian Yard" guests were greeted by models in dresses from the capsule collection of the famous Italian fashion designer Antonio Marras, which were created according to Bakst's sketches especially for the exhibition. Marras himself also attended the opening.

The world of beauty created by Bakst

"Our exhibition presents all aspects of Bakst's work - portraits, landscapes, theatrical costumes, beautiful fabrics created according to his sketches. We tried to make it a story about an artist who created a world of beauty around him. You will see 250 works, including extremely rare from private collections and the largest museums in the world ", - said the director of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts Marina Loshak, opening the exhibition.

She noted that the curators faced a difficult task, and the exhibition was difficult.

"I am horrified that there are so many of us today. We did not expect that there will be so many people," Loshak was surprised.

The ideological inspirer of the Chereshnevy Les festival, the head of the Bosco company, Mikhail Kusnirovich, notified those present that the exposition would have to be examined in groups.

The excursions are ready to be conducted by theater artist Pavel Kaplevich, director of the Multimedia Art Museum Olga Sviblova, fashion historian Alexander Vasiliev, who provided costumes for the exhibition, created for Parisian fashion houses according to Bakst's sketches, and other guests - experts in the artist's work.

"It is symbolic that on Pushkin's birthday in the Pushkin Museum we discover Bakst's work. We dressed up, forgot about traditional snacks, we came to meet art," microphone.

One of the curators of the exhibition, British art critic John Boult, joked that he personally believed in cosmic signs, and such a sign was sent to him.

“I believe in cosmic signs. It is known that Pushkin loved women's legs, but Bakst clearly did not like them. When we were finishing preparations for the exhibition, I broke my leg for joy,” Boult said.

Diaghilev seasons and portraits

Lev Bakst, a painter, portraitist, theater artist, book illustration, interior designer and creator of haute couture of the 1910s, known in the West as Leon Bakst, is best known for his impressive projects for Sergei Diaghilev's Russian Seasons in Paris and London.

Divided into groups, the guests went to inspect the exposition. Kaplevich immediately led his group to Bakst's work "Awakening", which had never been exhibited in Russia - from the Rothschild family fund.

"The panel on the theme of the tale" The Sleeping Beauty "was commissioned by the Rothschilds to Bakst. Members of the Rothschild family posed for him as models," said Kaplevich. In total, Bakst made seven fabulous panels for British billionaires.

The famous Russian fashion historian Vasiliev presented at the exhibition more than 20 exhibits from his private collection: fashionable dresses and theatrical costumes of the 1910-1920s for the ballets Tamara, Scheherazade, The Sleeping Princess and others, created according to Bakst's sketches.

Petersburg Museum of the Academy of Russian Ballet named after A.Ya. Vaganova provided for the exposition the famous costume of Vaslav Nijinsky from the ballet "The Phantom of the Rose".

"Nizhinsky's costume is the main erotica of the world," Kaplevich said.

Another gem of the exposition is a sketch of a costume for the favorite ballerina of the artist Ida Rubinstein for the ballet "Cleopatra".

The exposition also includes the artist's easel works: "Portrait of Sergei Diaghilev with a nanny", a self-portrait of the artist, portraits of the poets Andrei Bely and Zinaida Gippius, as well as decorative panels "Ancient Horror" and other works.

The exhibition is stylish and smart

"The result is a very artistic project, a stylish, smart exhibition, which reflects everything that Bakst did - a brilliant section of the portrait and a huge number of things little-known in Russia. Diaghilev's words, which he once said to Jean Cocteau, can be applied to this project:" Surprise me, "Tregulova shared her impressions with RIA Novosti.

In her opinion, the exposition contains "exactly what needs to be said about this artist today."

"It seems to me that the exhibition will be a great success, it is intriguing," summed up the director of the Tretyakov Gallery.

Works for the exposition were provided by the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum. St. Petersburg State Museum of Theater and Musical Art, State Central Theater Museum named after A.A. Bakhrushin, Central Naval Museum (St. Petersburg), Novgorod State Joint Museum-Reserve, Paris Pompidou Center, London Victoria and Albert Museum, Rothschild Family Fund, Strasbourg Museum of Contemporary Art, Israel Museum, as well as private collectors from Moscow, Paris, London and Strasbourg - only 31 exhibitors.

Especially for the opening day of the exhibition

the event's guest of honor, designer Antonio Marras created a capsule collection of couture dresses inspired by Bakst's costumes.

“I love life and gaiety and always tend to smile rather than knit eyebrows,” Lev Bakst admitted more than once. This thirst for life, optimism manifested itself, perhaps, in many of the works of this, of course, the most talented person. Leon Bakst, as they called him in the West, is a whole planet. “Bakst has golden hands, an amazing technical ability, a lot of taste,” contemporaries said about him.

Painter, portraitist, book and magazine illustration, interior designer and creator of haute couture of the 1910s, author of articles on contemporary art, design and dance, who became interested in photography and cinema in the last years of his life. And, of course, a theater artist, known in many ways for his impressive projects for Sergei Diaghilev's Russian Seasons in Paris and London. His extraordinary and dynamic sets and costumes have ensured the success of such legendary productions as Cleopatra, Scheherazade or The Sleeping Princess, and influenced the general idea of stage design.

With all this, the current exhibition in the Pushkin Museum is the first large-scale retrospective of Bakst's work in Russia, timed to coincide with the artist's 150th anniversary. We can see about 250 works of painting, original and printed graphics, photographs, archival documents, rare books, as well as stage costumes and sketches for fabrics. The exposition includes works from various state and private Russian and Western collections, and many of them are shown here for the first time. Sketches of costumes for Ida Rubinstein or Vaslav Nijinsky, the famous easel works "Portrait of Sergei Diaghilev with a nanny" or "Self-portrait", portraits of Andrei Bely and Zinaida Gippius - you just have to go and look!

It is noteworthy that especially for the opening day of the exhibition, its guest of honor, designer Antonio Marras, created a capsule collection of couture dresses inspired by the costumes of Lev Bakst. Marras has always felt like not only a clothing designer, but also a theater artist, and it is no coincidence that some of his collections often resembled Bakst's exquisitely graphic costumes. “I got acquainted with Bakst’s work in Paris 25 years ago, and since then I have been collecting books and materials dedicated to this artist,” the designer said at the opening of the exhibition. - I myself am from Sardinia, and Bakst's style, the texture of his outfits are very close to me. In addition, it is very important for me that the outfit has a soul and character, which we see in Bakst. "

At the opening ceremony of the exhibition, many guests and participants of the festival spoke about Lev Bakst and their own towards him - or his work, some of whom, moreover, acted as guides that evening.

We tried to make it a story about an artist who created a world of beauty, who tried to reject cliches in order to make the world around him more beautiful, in order to include absolutely all the colors that seemed important to him in his drawing.

I believe in signs of fate. Why is Bakst in the Pushkin Museum? As you know, Pushkin loved legs, but Bakst, as it turns out, did not, because a year ago, at the final stage of preparing our exhibition, jumping for joy, I broke my leg, and a few months later, the second curator, Natalya Avtonomova, also jumped for joy, and also broke her leg. So, gentlemen, walk the exhibition with caution.

This is the story of an amazing person who is our national treasure and, fortunately, returns to us 150 years later. I looked at his works, this is an amazing exhibition, meaningful, voluminous. I think that for me, for people who love theater, ballet, this is a great gift. He is both Russian and Western European - he united the whole planet.

"Cherry Les", as always, ideally constructs the festival program, in which the subtlest associative connections are always traced: Bakst is a great theatrical artist who combined in his costumes from antiquity - and, mind you, we are in the museum of antique casts - to crazy oriental motives , and Marras, who, in his costumes, also connects everything that is possible. In both cases, it is post-modern - and Bakst did not even know this word. What we see now within the walls of the Pushkin Museum is natural, organic and beautiful.

Bakst very subtly understood the essence of ballet. The ballet movements and graphics of Bakst presented in the exhibition are magnificent. And the Antonio Marras capsule collection, created specially for the opening ceremony, became the embodiment of the designer's love for the work of Lev Bakst.

I have been familiar with the work of Leon Bakst since childhood, which, in my opinion, is completely normal, because Bakst is one of the components of the Russian style. The Russian style is perceived by the Western audience in a very multifaceted manner. Everything that concerns his fabulousness, fantasy - all this is in fact designed by artists who were Bakst's contemporaries, Bakst himself, and was somehow used by Diagiev in Russian Seasons.

It is amazing when a style that corresponds to Bakst's time is recreated, at the same time - with the costumes of a modern designer, and all this is subtly and tastefully played. I am a theatrical person, and the theatrical world is very bright and imaginative. He is not as graphic as he is sensual, and, of course, Bakst expresses this in full measure. Around, delicious, appetizing, some kind of sunny texture, which is not enough in everyday life. Awesome exhibition.

Details from Posta-Magazine
The exhibition will run until September 4, 2016.
St. Volkhonka, 12

From June 8 to August 28 at the State Museum of Fine Arts named after A.S. Pushkin will host a large-scale anniversary retrospective exhibition of Lev Bakst (1866-1924).

About two hundred and fifty works of painting, original and printed graphics, photographs, archival documents, rare books, as well as stage costumes and sketches for fabrics are for the first time brought together at the exhibition “Lev Bakst / Leon Bakst. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth ”.

The exhibition pays tribute to the rich and varied work of one of the most original and outstanding artists of the early 20th century.

Lev Samoilovich Bakst, known in the West as Leon Bakst, is famous, first of all, for his impressive projects for S. Diaghilev's Russian seasons in Paris and London. His unusual and dynamic sets and costumes have ensured the success of such legendary productions as Cleopatra, Scheherazade, The Blue God and The Sleeping Princess, and influenced the general idea of stage design.

Bakst became famous not only as a theater artist, but also as a painter, as a portrait painter, as a master of book and magazine illustration, an interior designer and creator of haute couture in the 1910s, close to the fashion houses of Paken, Chanel and Poiret. Bakst also designed jewelry, bags, wigs and other fashion accessories, wrote articles on contemporary art, design and dance, lectured in Russia, Europe and America on fashion and contemporary art, wrote an autobiographical novel full of intriguing details, was fond of photography and at the end life showed great interest in cinema. In love with antiquity and oriental art, Lev Bakst combined the extravagance of Art Nouveau with a sense of proportion and common sense - this rare combination brought him worldwide fame.

The exposition includes works from public and private Russian and Western collections. Many of them are shown for the first time in Russia. Works presented at the exhibition at the Pushkin Museum im. A.S. Pushkin, cover a number of the most important topics for the artist: landscapes, portraits, panels, fashionable toilets and fabrics, and, of course, the theater, to which the main part of the exhibition is devoted.

A number of costumes created according to Bakst's sketches will be presented: Museum of the Academy of Russian Ballet named after A.Ya. Vaganova will show the famous costume of Vaslav Nijinsky as the Phantom of the Rose, the St. Petersburg State Museum of Theatrical and Musical Art provided four costumes: a Japanese doll for Vera Trefilova for the ballet Fairy of Dolls, costumes for the ballets Cleopatra, Carnival, Daphnis and Chloe. " The famous Russian fashion historian Alexander Vasiliev - more than 10 exhibits from his collection: fashionable dresses and theatrical costumes of the 1910-1920s for the ballets Tamara, Scheherazade, The Sleeping Princess.

The art of Lev Bakst is an organic part of the revival of interest in the decorative arts of the early 20th century in Russia, Europe and America. The innovativeness and ingenuity of the stage design created by the artist still influences the modern artistic process.

A scientific illustrated catalog has been prepared for the exhibition, which presents about 400 of the artist's works.
