But before you figure out how to tune a six-string guitar, you need to know what we get at the finish. The standard guitar tuning looks like this: MI - LA - RE - SOL - SI - MI, in the tuner it is designated as E - A - D - G - H - E.

The list goes from the top (thickest) string to the bottom (thinner) string. Just in case, I will note that the extreme "mi" is not the same sound, together they make up the "octave" interval, that is, they sound at different heights. The guitar has such a small paradox: the higher the string is on the fretboard, the lower it sounds.

Tuning by ear

How to tune your guitar by ear? Select the appropriate mode in the tuner and specify the scale, for example, standard. You see strings with lettering notes. Click on the one you want to tune, listen to how it sounds and make sure that the string on your guitar sounds exactly the same.

Smartphone Apps

Are you logged in from a mobile device and the tuners are not displayed? Then we recommend downloading a good, proven tuner to your smartphone or tablet.

A free but limited version of the online tuner is available here.

How do you know they sound the same? There are two methods. First, hit the corresponding string on the tuner, listen, and then pick it up on your guitar. If the sound has not changed, then the string is tuned. Second, find on the Internet how the "unison" interval sounds, listen to it, remember and compare what you get with it.

If you still do not understand how to do this, we have prepared a visual video for you. But be that as it may, this is not an easy way for beginners. Then how to tune a guitar for a beginner? "

To do this, the tuner has a second mode, select it and indicate the required tuning. Now choose the string you want to tune and at this stage you will need a microphone from your computer. Bring it to the instrument (or the instrument to it, if the instrument is built-in, for example, in a laptop) and pull the string.

Now look at what the device is showing. You see an arrow - if the string is tuned correctly it will be in the middle. If it deviates to the left, then you have not reached, i.e. the sound is lower than necessary, if it is on the right, it means that it has been dragged.

What to do if the arrow jumps randomly or does not react to you in any way? Try moving the microphone closer or further. Remember, you don’t need to bring it close to the strings, but at the same time, don’t hold it too far. Ideal location 30-50 cm from the outlet (round hole under the strings on the body).

It seems that everything is simple, but just in case, we recorded a video for you.

Perhaps you wondered, why then the first mode if there is a second, which is much easier to use? Well, firstly, not everyone has a microphone, and it is impossible to use a tuner without it, and secondly, tuning a guitar by ear is very developing. So, if you are a beginner guitarist, the ideal option is to first tune the instrument by ear and then check the correctness through the tuner.

In a word, tuning a guitar at home is a simple process, but at first it can be difficult for a beginner. But, as practice shows, each time you will get it faster and faster and after a few attempts the question "How to tune the guitar correctly" will not bother you.

  • 3 string
  • 4 string

Tuning a six-string guitar without a tuner

How to tune a guitar for a beginner who doesn't have a tuner? Tuning the guitar completely yourself, without using third-party programs is also possible!

You can often also come across the question: "What fret should I tune my guitar on?"- it is quite reasonable and now I will explain why. The fact is that all the strings with a tuned guitar are interconnected with the following relationship:

The 2nd string, when clamped at the 5th fret, should sound like an open 1st string;
The 3rd string, when clamped at the 4th fret, should sound like an open 2nd string;
The 4th string, when clamped at the 5th fret, should sound like an open 3rd string;
The 5th string, when clamped at the 5th fret, should sound like an open 4th string;
The 6th string, when clamped at the 5th fret, should sound like an open 5th string.

So how do you tune your six-string guitar this way?

We do this:

  1. we hold down the 2nd string at the 5th fret and tune it so that it sounds like the 1st open;
  2. after that, we hold down the 3rd string at the 4th fret and tune it so that it sounds like the 2nd open;
  3. and so on according to the scheme above.
This way you will be able to tune your guitar to the 5th fret, that is, using the addiction.

This method is bad because we do not know how to tune the first string initially. In fact, all strings depend on the 1st string, because we start tuning from the 2nd string (and it tunes along the 1st string), then we tune the 3rd string along the 2nd string, and so on ... But I acted very wisely - and wrote it all down.

Make sure the computer "hears" your guitar sound. If you play an acoustic guitar, the sound will go to the computer through the microphone. You can check the performance of the microphone in Skype or any sound recording program. If your guitar is electric, then just plug it into the microphone input of your computer. By right-clicking on the tuner and choosing the "Parameters" item, you can change the signal source, for example, if an electric guitar is connected to the line input.

To receive a signal from the instrument to the tuner, click the "" ↓ button, thereby confirming the recording permission. The button is located on the tuner.

If there is no microphone, then use the correctly tuned guitar strings.

How to tune your guitar

The sequence of notes: C → C # → D → D # → E → F → F # → G → G # → A → A # → B → C. Play the open strings one at a time - the tuner will show the notes. The strings should sound in accordance with the tuning shown below (E B G D A E). If the green indicator on the scale after hitting the string deviates noticeably to the left of the corresponding letter, this means that the string must be pulled with a peg. If the green indicator deviates to the right, then the string tension must be slightly loosened. If the letter on the tuner turns green, then you hit the right note. But be careful, it may be the correct note, but from a different octave! In order not to break the strings and not get upset, we recommend that beginners carefully listen to the sounds of the strings, and only then tune the guitar.

Classic Tuned Guitar Strings
  • 1 string (thinnest) - E (note "Mi")
  • 2 string - B (note "B")
  • 3 string - G (note "G")
  • 4 string - D (note "D")
  • 5th string - A (note "A")
  • 6 string - E (note "Mi")

After checking strings 1 through 6, the tuning of the guitar is not complete. Now you need to tune the sound of the strings in the opposite direction. For what? Changing the tension on individual strings can eventually change the neck tension. As a result, after finishing the tuning of six strings, some of them may not be at the desired level. Therefore, string testing must be done in two directions to achieve perfect results.

How often should you tune with a guitar tuner? It depends on the needs of the owner of the instrument and the sound of the guitar. If you tune the guitar before each play, the instrument will sound perfect. Enjoy your guitar playing!
