Growing potatoes, cheese making, trout breeding is vital, but not the main thing for monks. In contrast to a strong kolkhoz or a farmer's estate, the agricultural obediences of the inhabitants have other ideological, in modern terms, grounds: nothing in the monastery is done without trusting in the will of God and prayer, and everything is aimed at gaining peace in the soul and humility.

And there was never an easy life on the island, even in the most prosperous years. And the tragic events in the history of the monastery are countless. And each time the brethren raised the monastery from the ruins, carefully restoring and preserving the old and creating a new one. Without peace of mind, this difficult path cannot be traversed: "Sacrifice to God the spirit is broken, the heart is broken and humble God will not despise"(Ps. 50:19).

Like hundreds and tens of years ago, for every temple built, equipped with a skete or a tomato grown in a greenhouse, there is daily obedience. It is sometimes difficult for a layperson to believe that a person who has received a good university education is engaged in mowing or milking hay on a farm, but now, in a monastery, with joy and a light heart "Twists the tails of the cows"... And the most amazing thing is that the works of these city residents, in the past, bring a variety of tangible fruits.

We repeat, every work that a believer begins must have the blessing of God. But it does not come to the harsh and willful, but to the humble and meek. In the "Teachings" of the Monk Abba Dorotheos we read: “In every case that comes across, even if it was extremely necessary and required diligence, I do not want you to do it with arguments, or with embarrassment, but be sure that every business that you do - whether it is great or small, - there is the eighth part of the sought-after, and to preserve one's dispensation, even if it happens from this not to fulfill the deeds, there are the seventh eighth.
