Ballet dancer Sergei Polunin, and his personal life is always heard. Numerous tattoos, so beautifully demonstrated in Hozier's video “Take me to Church”, say a lot about Sergei's life. What do the "Natasha" tattoos, the coats of arms of Ukraine and Russia, the cross mean, and how do they personify the hero himself. Today we will talk about creative achievements, new projects, acting career, love relationships and the latest news in 2018 of one of the brightest and most controversial artists.

Biography

Sergei Polunin was born in 1989 in Kherson. From a young age, he set himself the goal of becoming an Olympic athlete, for which, from the age of 4, he spent at least 6 hours a day in the gym. But after a few years, the boy's parents, discovering that Sergei also has an ear for music, decided to transfer him to a dance school. And a year later, the young dancer was able to enter the choreographic school in the capital. Sure that this is a good turn in the boy's biography, but needing money to move to Kiev, Sergei's dad left to work in Portugal, and his grandmother got a job as a nurse.

First steps to success

At the age of 12, after intensive training at the school, Sergei won a prize at the Serge Lifar International Competition. At the age of 13, with the help of funds, Polunin was able to move to London to study at the Royal Ballet School. During his studies, he took part in several competitions, where he often received awards. At the age of 17, he graduated from the School, and he was immediately invited to the Royal Ballet. At the age of 19, he became its prime minister.

Further career

As the youngest prime minister, Sergei Polunin was predicted a great future. However, a few years later, he decided to leave the Royal Ballet. In many ways, the reason was the lack of money. Surprisingly, many of the dancers who are part of the troupe not only could not afford to rent an apartment on their own, but even go somewhere to eat. By the way, as Polunin says, the same is happening in Russia. If earlier those who were part of the troupe were allocated housing, now they refuse from unlimited contracts, and contracts can only be extended. And in this case, apartments are not provided.

Also, the reason that Sergei left the Royal Theater was that he believed that the dancer deserves the same recognition as an actor or athlete. And today, dancers often don't even have agents. In general, this is due to ballet politics, in which the agent is personified by evil. He manipulates and squeezes money out of the dancer.

While working at the Royal Ballet, Sergei Polunin, his personal life, alcohol and drug use was constantly talked about. For this, Sergei was recognized by the director of the Royal Ballet as an unreliable dancer, and subsequently his visa was canceled. Polunin hoped to move to New York, but there they were afraid for the behavior of an eccentric dancer. Finding himself in an unemployed situation, Sergei was very happy about Igor Zelensky's offer to be the premier of the Moscow Musical Theater and a permanent guest soloist of the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theater. Maybe it was then that the tattoo of the coat of arms of the Russian Federation appeared in the dancer's biography, which, by the way, he "removed" shortly before the annexation of Crimea.

However, the Hozier clip “Take me to Church” brought worldwide popularity to Polunin. By the way, LaChapelle's offer to appear in the video came just at the moment when Sergei was depressed and did not want to study ballet.

And the video was like a leap into something completely new and beautiful. Filming took place on the island of Maui. After the clip was viewed millions of times, and Sergei began to recognize and express admiration for the Hollywood stars. Also in London, BBC representatives wanted to become co-producers of the film "Dancer" about the biography of Sergei Polunin.

Project Polunin was introduced in 2018. Subsequently, they talked a lot about the final part of the play "Narcissus and Echo" and the talent of Natalya Osipova, as well as about the personal life of ballet dancers Sergei Polunin and Natalya.

Personal life

Many legends circulated about the personal life of ballet dancer Sergei Polunin. The most common reason for them was his tattoos. For example, the tattoo "Sorry, tiger" was dedicated to the beloved Sergei, who left him. Probably, in this way he wanted to return her, but the attempt failed.

While in the troupe of the Royal Theater, Sergei Polunin had an affair with Helen Crawford, who is 9 years older than the dancer. They spent several years together, but after Helen said that she was ready to become Sergei's wife and wanted children, the couple broke up.

After they talked about an affair with the ballerina Yulia Stolyarchuk, but the couple did not confirm this.

In 2015, a tattoo "Natasha" was noticed on the dancer's arm, which was dedicated to the ballerina Natalya Osipova. They met at the Giselle rehearsals at La Scala. Previously, Natalia performed with David Holberg, but due to a serious injury, he was unable to participate in the second season. Having paired up, Natalya and Sergey realized that they were perfect for each other. A little later, they had an affair. True, recently there have been news that the couple broke up, but they themselves denied it, and they were together on the red carpet dedicated to Murder on the Orient Express.

Latest news

Once starring in a video, the life of Sergei Polunin changed. And the video in the biography of the dancer was followed by work in advertising and cinema. Sergey considers cinema to be a wonderful environment. Back in 2012, Polunin was offered to study at an acting school, but then he did not want to give up ballet. And today he completely surrendered himself to a new hobby. And the latest news in 2018 about Polunin is inextricably linked with cinema. This is Murder on the Orient Express and Red Sparrow.

Classical ballet places high hopes on the artist, and large glossy publications regularly invite young talent to photo shoots ... We are talking about Sergei Polunin, the new star of Russian ballet. In this article, you will be presented with a short biography.

Childhood

Like most dancers, Sergei Polunin got into ballet at an early age. While his peers were playing in kindergarten, the 4-year-old boy did gymnastics at a sports school. The teachers immediately noticed Sergei's incredible plasticity. And later it turned out that little Polunin has an impeccable hearing. This predetermined the fate of the future ballet dancer. At the age of 8, the parents transferred the boy to a choreographic school.

Until the age of 10, Sergei Polunin lived with his family in Kherson (Ukraine). Then the parents realized that in order to further develop the boy's career, it was necessary to go to the capital. Sergei and his mother went to Kiev, and his father stayed in Kherson and sent them money for existence. A talented and receptive boy developed very rapidly.

Moving to London

At the age of 13, the young talent set off to conquer London. This opportunity was given to Sergei by the Nureyev Foundation. Its representatives noticed the boy's talent and singled out Polunin from the crowd of young dancers hungry for fame.

Since Sergey devoted his entire childhood to ballet, there was no time left for communication with peers. Therefore, the boy could not be called sociable. The artist himself says that only thanks to isolation he is best able to convey on stage the feelings of romantic and lonely heroes. Also, this is facilitated by the extraordinary appearance of a young man.

Sergei Polunin, whose personal life is described below, began his career in the most prestigious theater in the world - Covent Garden. Already at the age of 19 he became its leading soloist. This was the first such incident in the history of the London theater. But it was then that Polunin realized that he had not yet achieved much ...

Return to Russia

In an interview with Vogue magazine, Sergei said: "You know, in our country they say that a Russian can leave Russia, but Russia can never leave a Russian." And then the young man starred in a photo shoot for this publication. His predecessor, Rudolf Nureyev, did exactly the same.

Dancer Sergei Polunin really got bored in London. Of course, he achieved the position of soloist of Covent Garden, but the young man wanted even more fame. In addition, no matter how prestigious the performances in England are, the Bolshoi Theater with its backstage intrigues and loud premieres remains the dream of any Russian ballet dancer.

New performances

In one of his interviews, the dancer spoke about national approaches to ballet art: “In Russia, no one will listen to people without status. In England, however, their opinion is dear. The whole system is built on this. There are no individuals, there is only a team. In terms of human relations, this is great, but it really hurts art. A talented artist is not allowed to open up and is kept on the same level with others. " Sergey believes that only in Russia will he be able to fully realize his talent. Polunin got a job as prime minister at the Stanislavsky Musical Theater. And next season his dream will come true - the dancer will start joint projects with the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theaters.

Those who have not yet been to the artist's performances should hurry to the box office. Indeed, very soon the young man will end his career. 26 years is exactly the age at which Sergei Polunin plans to leave. Ballet, according to the dancer, is highly traumatic: “Up to 32 everything is good and fun, the body has time to recover, but after 28 you need to increase the load, otherwise you will quickly lose shape. And in adulthood, performances are generally given with great difficulty. "

Personal life

The dancer's personal life is directly related to ballet. After all, Sergei literally lives in the theater, completely surrendering to his beloved work. But this is only one of the reasons why representatives of the ballet art meet ... When Sergei Polunin lived in London, he was in a relationship with Helen Crawford, an artist of the Royal Ballet. But before leaving, the young man decided to part with her. Polunin himself declares that he only likes dancers: “I'm already used to the ballet standard. Other women seem strange to me - they lack muscle. "

Polunin is now in Moscow. Whether he lives alone in his small apartment next to the theater or not, nobody knows. Sergei does not like to talk about his personal life. Nevertheless, he does not hide that things are pretty bad with this. In a recent conversation with Mickey Rourke for the "Interview" edition, the dancer ironically noted: "My reputation is not very good, that's why everything is complicated with girls."

By the way, for one of his former lovers, Sergei Polunin got a tattoo on his back. It was the inscription "Sorry, Tiger". This is what the dancer called the girl who left him. By his act, Sergei wanted her back. The young man did not specify what he was guilty of before his former passion. But surely he is to blame, because Polunin's reputation is "not very".

Polunin does not like to get up early. Everyone who worked with him knows about it. And he doesn’t argue: “I usually wake up difficult, for a long time. And immediately - to the machine. " His close relationship with drugs was mentioned in the press as many times as it was about his difficult relationship with the ballet. It is logical to ask how things are now and whether the reason for the late awakening lies in stormy evenings. “No, I don’t drink, let alone stronger substances,” Sergei does not avert his eyes to the side, and his words sound convincing. - I take L-carnitin before a machine or a performance, after that - magnesia. For such words, every Moscow zozhnik would shake his hand.

When, at the age of 22, Polunin left the Covent Garden troupe, newspapermen and a deluded public concluded that the reason for leaving was discipline and white powder. But that would be too easy.

“It was not some ill-considered act. I knew for a year and a half that I would leave. Questions were ripening for me, answers to which I did not receive. Why are dancers treated in such a way that at 35 they are simply kicked out of the theater? Why are these salaries? Why can't anyone afford to buy an apartment? Not one, not even the best ballet dancer at the Royal Theater, will earn that much in his entire career. Only in a mortgage! And then I figured that the best football players in the world in two weeks get more money than the artists in the Royal Ballet in a year, all combined. For example, a corps de ballet receives $ 1,500 a month. Moreover, such a person works eleven hours a day, he has absolutely no life, he sees nothing. I am terribly offended by the industry! (Laughs.) At that time, I constantly thought: why did my mother send me to ballet, why did I spend all these years ?! Why was he trying so hard to be as good as he could? Then not to be able to buy a ticket for the parents to come, or their own house? There were many questions. And so I decided: why should I suffer in this industry, I'd rather go to the cinema. "

Several years ago, Sergei Polunin admitted that leaving the Royal Ballet was also a powerful session of practical psychotherapy for him: just kicked out. I have lived in London for half my life, but I have no citizenship. What am I going to do in this case? "

Then Polunin decided not to run away from his fears. He did not try to jump over his head, which in his situation is not quite a figure of speech. He did not prove his need for the stage, to kill himself in order to earn the love of managers and the public. He did everything to make the worst happen. And at the same time, he says, he was terribly surprised when nothing happened in response to his statements about his readiness to throw himself into the arms of the magical world of cinema. He slammed the door deafeningly loudly, and the phone did not break off with suggestions.

The film “Dancer” directed by Stephen Kontor not only carefully examines Sergei's childhood and adolescence - thanks to these studies, it becomes clear that the questions facing Polunin about the industry were inevitable - but also tells how the hero was looking for a way out of the dead end into which he had driven himself ...

The meeting with mentor Igor Zelensky turned into not only work at the Stanislavsky and Novate theaters, but also the appearance of a portrait of Zelensky on the shoulder. Acquaintance with the ballerina Natalia Osipova - the categorical tattoo "Natasha" on the knuckles. “In the ballet world, we all know about each other, even if we don’t know each other. Considering Sergey's reputation, I was sure that I would never work with him, ”Natalya said in their joint interview with The Guardian. Having met in Milan at the rehearsals of Giselle, both were satisfied. “I felt that he is real, that he is the person I can trust,” said Natalya. “When I danced with her, it was one hundred percent real. I would like it to be like this always, ”Sergei echoed her. No sooner had they declared themselves a couple than the ballet world rejoiced - it was obvious to critics, fans and even functionaries: Osipova was able not only to cope with this rebellious temperament, but also to tame, directing them to the right professional channel.

The importance of meetings with Osipova and Zelensky in Polunin's life is difficult to overestimate, but there was one more, no less important. Gabriella Tana became the author of the idea of "Dancer" and the producer of the picture. She received an Oscar nomination for Felomena starring Judi Dench, and also helped Rafe Fiennes make his directing debut with the adaptation of Shakespeare's Coriolanus. It was Gabi, as Sergei calls her, who decided that Polunin's claims to a film career were not unfounded. With her filing, he ended up on the same set with Johnny Depp, Jennifer Lawrence and Willem Dafoe. Sergei was delighted with working meetings with idols, but before that he had to tell about himself in detail, without embellishment and special effects, in the film "Dancer".

“At first I didn't understand why Gaby was doing this. And then I heard her say to someone: “I believe in dance. He is important to all of us. I turn on the music and dance myself at home. " And then I thought: the tribes danced, we dance in clubs, we meet the first love, when we dance, when we are joyful, we dance. It is very important. And Gaby is the person who believes that dance and the people in it need to be supported. She supported me and gave me strength to do something for others. "

Sergey Vladimirovich Polunin is a Ukrainian ballet dancer, actor and model. At various times he participated in projects of the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theater, the Moscow Musical Theater, the Royal Ballet, since 2016 he has been a soloist with the Bavarian Ballet. In 2017, he starred in the Hollywood movie Murder on the Orient Express.

Childhood

Sergey was born in the southern Ukrainian Kherson, which is picturesquely stretched out on the right bank of the Dnieper.

At the age of 3, at the suggestion of his parents, he came to the gymnastics section of a local sports school. Three years later, it became clear that in addition to excellent physical data, the boy is endowed with an absolute ear for music and unique plasticity. It was decided to transfer him to a choreographic school, where in a matter of months he became the best student.

The parents saw that their child had every chance of becoming an outstanding dancer, so they sent eight-year-old Seryozha to the Kiev Choreographic School. His mother left with him, and his father was forced to work at a construction site in Portugal in order to provide his wife and son with everything they needed.

The ballet took up almost all of the boy's time and energy, so he never learned to get along with his peers. However, isolation and a certain detachment always helped him to better convey the feelings of romantics and loners.

First steps to fame

In 2002, Sergei became a prize-winner at the prestigious international ballet competition, and a year later, thanks to the Rudolf Nureyev Foundation, he was admitted to the Royal Ballet School in London.

Ballet is for the soul. Something good happens inside a person when he sees a dance.

Four years later, he became a finalist in the Lausanne Prize international competition, and at the age of 17 he joined the Covent Gardena ballet company. Two years later, Polunin was entrusted with performing the main roles, and he became the youngest prime minister in the entire history of this renowned troupe.

And, perhaps, the most scandalous. His outrageous behavior was discussed as much as his outstanding abilities. Sergei adorned his body with numerous tattoos, periodically drank himself to the point of feeling insensible, dabbled in cocaine, for which he earned the nickname “enfant terrible of the Russian ballet”. Although at the beginning of 2017, he admitted to reporters that he no longer drinks and does not use illegal drugs, and every morning begins with hard work at the ballet machine.

Further career

In 2012, the young dancer made an unexpected decision - to move to Russia. He dreamed of being on the stage of the Bolshoi Theater and was sure that it was in his homeland that his talent would be fully revealed. Igor Zelensky, artistic director of the Stanislavsky Theater, took over the young artist. He immediately considered a unique talent in the shocking young man and made him the premier of his theater. During this period, Sergei also performed at the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theater as a guest soloist.

Sergei Polunin starred in the video "Take Me to Church" Hozier

In 2014, Sergey starred in the video "Take Me to Church" by the Irish artist Hozier. This track made a splash in the music world, scored tens of millions of views on YouTube and won many prestigious awards. Shooting in Hawaii made an indelible impression on the exalted young man, and he decided to gradually move away from ballet and switch to cinema.

"Dancer" - a trailer for the film about Sergei Polunin

In 2016, the film "The Dancer" was released on the world screens, which tells the story of Sergei Polunin's amazing success, the difficult path to fame and world fame and mental anguish tearing apart his contradictory nature.

Personal life of Sergei Polunin

The artist's personal life is as turbulent and unpredictable as his career. His first serious love interest was London ballet dancer Helen Crawford. She was nine years older than her chosen one and was already ready to start a family and children. However, the ardent young lover was not satisfied with such a prospect, and soon they parted.

Then Polunin repeatedly appeared in the company of the young ballerina Yulia Stolyarchuk, and after a while fans noticed the tattoo "Natasha" on his arm. Sergei dedicated it to the ballerina Natalya Osipova, whom he met at the Teatro alla Scala during the rehearsal of Giselle. Soon, their relationship turned from partnership into love, and the artists stopped hiding their romance.

Sergei Polunin now

In the fall of 2017, the premiere of Murder on the Orient Express with Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz and Michelle Pfeiffer took place.

Polunin in this film appeared in the form of Count Andrei. The main difficulty, the artist noted, was gaining confidence - at first he could not believe where and in the company of which people he was. However, the young man managed not to lose control of his emotions and perfectly cope with his task, not without the help of director Kenneth Branagh.

In parallel, Sergei starred in the spy thriller "Red Sparrow" with Jennifer Lawrence, which will be released in the spring of 2018.

A famous dancer - about the similarities and differences of ballet customs in Moscow and London.

22, 23, 24 March The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theater shows the premiere of Kenneth Macmillan's ballet Mayerling, about the tragic fate of the Austrian Crown Prince Rudolph. On the eve of the performance, the Izvestia correspondent met with the leading actor, ex-premier of the Royal Ballet of Great Britain, Sergei Polunin.

- Macmillan is rarely danced in Russia, although they love historical melodramas. But you seem to have a lot of experience performing in his ballets.

Yes. From the age of seventeen I was engaged in the corps de ballet "Manon" and "Mayerling". This is the basic acting training that needed to be done. In Macmillan's performances you do not play, but live, there is a lot of improvisation. If someone got up in the wrong place, you can go around him as you want. It all depends on the mood, well-being.

- Rudolph is a difficult character and, to put it mildly, unsympathetic. Are you comfortable?

Yes. Some roles don't suit me very well. In Giselle, for example, I cannot “get” into the first act: how is it that I, the count, play the peasant? And Rudolph “lay down” comfortably, organically.

- How do you think our audience will accept Mayerling? Still, a very distant story from Russia.

I don’t think the Russian public will like Mayerling 100 percent, it’s a matter of taste. Artistic director Igor Zelensky has such a taste here. In London, the Royal Ballet troupe has been working on Macmillan for many years, the performance is constantly in the repertoire, even the scenery is old. Here everything is from scratch. Until today, I thought that this was a big risk, "Mayerling" will look fake - there is a completely different style than in Russian performances. But the theater has done a tremendous job, a lot of nerves have been wasted, let's see if, over time, understanding will come.

- Besides you, Rudolph the artistic director is also dancing.

Yes, Igor is no longer young - 43 years old, but in excellent shape. Although this ballet is difficult even for young people to dance. After the general run, I seem to have aged two years. Mayerling takes all the energy, like Spartak.

- By the way, about age. You are now 23. You said that you want to end your ballet career at the age of 26.

This is such a dream. For some reason, at 18, I thought 26 was a good age to leave. Ballet is traumatic. Up to 32 years old it is fun and good, the body is recovering, although after 28 you have to increase the load to keep yourself in good shape. And in adulthood, it's generally hard. For example, Igor has to study on his own from eight in the morning, swing, then go to class, then rehearse, then do the director's work, he comes home late at night. But a person wants to work less and get more pleasure.

- Let's say you leave at 26. Where to?

Question. I don't know what else to do. If I cross this line - 26 years old - I will dance to the end, prove that even at 50 you can perform at a good level. In addition, ampoules for muscle recovery have now appeared, so that the hormones of youth remain in the body for a longer time.

- I cannot but ask about your departure from the Royal Ballet of Great Britain. Why did you offend his leadership so much?

I don’t think that I somehow offended the management, we remained on good terms. Recently I danced "Margarita and Armana" with Tamara Rojo, this recording will take place in cinemas around the world in June, I hope we will continue to cooperate.

- Do you already have an agreement?

They never speak in advance. They spare their dancers.

- Sorry, i do not understand.

The Royal Ballet takes great care of the dancers who work 24 hours a day.

Probably, they shouldn't know that I will dance with them, after all, I left the troupe. In Russia, the opinion of people without statuses is not considered, but in London their opinion is valued, the whole system is built on the fact that they are a team, there are no individuals. Humanly, this is good, but in the end it hurts art. A talented artist is often kept at a general level, not allowed to reveal himself.

- Was this one of the reasons why you left the theater?

History is always repeating itself. You can look into the past to find out the future. The Royal Ballet included such artists as Rudolf Nureyev, Igor Zelensky, Irek Mukhamedov. The Royal Ballet, in principle, has always been based on the Russians. Now there are no Russians there, and there is no one to dance. At Nuriyev, the British made money at home and made careers. And when his peak passed, they just kicked out. It was also with Mukhamedov and Igor. Everyone is taken away, such an English mafia. So I thought that in some years someone young would come, who would be easier to manage and who would not have to pay so much - the salary is increasing every year. At the same time, according to the contract, you cannot be fired, you can only leave yourself. Therefore, they begin to put pressure on a person, select performances. Imagine - first you are given everything, and then nothing, in your own theater.

- Are you comfortable at Stasik?

I like that I can show the theater something new, that they listen to me, that our tastes coincide with the management. And I especially like freedom. Your life is already passing in the theater, and if you are not given freedom, then why work there at all?

- But you did not choose this collective right away - you went to the American Ballet Theater (ABT) and the Mariinsky, but for some reason they did not see you at the Bolshoi.

At that time, there were no leaders in the Bolshoi, but when the speech came, why not take Polunin, it turned out that they were afraid of me. Then the negative press already went that I was inadequate: no one at the peak gave up such a chance. People were afraid that I would throw them. I appreciate in Igor that he was not afraid to take risks. Professionally discussed the prospects with me, and I realized that the theater is interested in me, and not only in the performance. In art, you have to take risks. This could return a great success.

- Is your passion for tattoos also a risk?

Not a hobby anymore. I gave up with him the day before I left the Royal Ballet. It all coincided. The only source of happiness in London was my girlfriend. I stopped liking the theater, I just churned out ballets, so I contacted a tattoo parlor. There was a kind of boyishness in it. The area was not good, but interesting, all people with characters, stories. When I realized that we were parting with the girl, I realized that I also needed to get rid of the tattoo, I got too involved there, I was connected with the bank: my friend and I had a salon in half. Two weeks before that, I almost rented a two-story building in London, I would have to pay? 80 thousand a year - it's good that I didn't. I gave everything to a friend, and I myself was freed.

- You have tattoos on your arm, beautiful, but how do you dance with them?

No problem, I stick it with a plaster.

- Now you have only creative plans?

No, there is always something else. I would like to create my own ballet clothes. I know what the dancers are missing. The main thing is to have an idea, then the right people will be found.

- How do you perceive the situation with the artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet?

This would not have happened in the West. They don't take ballet so seriously. In Russia, this is a huge force, the Bolshoi is a country within a country. The main thing is that this situation does not happen again.
