Rowing channel "Krylatskoye" is a sports facility in Moscow, Russia, in the Krylatskoye district.

The Krylatskoye rowing canal was built in 1972-1973 according to the design of architect Kuzmin and engineer Vasiliev for the European Rowing Championships.

The rowing canal is located in the artificial channel of the Tatarovskaya floodplain of the Moscow River. The length of the canal is 2.3 km. In the main channel of the canal, 125 m wide, there are 6 lanes for rowing and 9 for kayak and canoe competitions. The width of the return channel is 75 m, depth 3-3.5 m.

The channel hosts world-class competitions. The canal was completely reconstructed for the 2014 World Kayak and Canoe Championships. Currently, the canal in Krylatskoye is considered the best in the world and meets the highest requirements for a reservoir for organizing competitions at any level. One of the advantages of the canal, as well as one of its main differences from other bodies of water, is its location within Moscow, which saves organizers and participants time, effort and money and makes any competition accessible to mass spectators.

The Krylatskoye district, of course, has only gained from this modernization - even now it’s nice to just walk next to the Rowing Canal (there are excellent, modern park areas, alleys, etc.), not to mention attending sports competitions.

In Soviet Moscow there were many places for water sports; rowing clubs with slipways for storing boats proliferated on the banks of the Moscow River and the Khimki Reservoir. The ice had not yet completely melted, but the rowers had already started training. But to hold major international competitions, it was necessary to create a modern infrastructure. And so, by August 1973, to host the European Rowing Championship, the Rowing Canal was built in Krylatskoye (architect Kuzmin, engineer Vasiliev).

The Krylatskoye Olympic Training and Sports Center is, first of all, a rowing canal with a length of 2340 meters, a width of 125 meters and a depth of 3.5 meters at the start and 3 meters at the finish. Its creators were the architects of workshop No. 7 of the Mosproekt-2 Department. During construction, for the first time in international practice, two channels were made. In the main channel, athletes compete in speed, nestled in their kayaks and canoes, and along the second channel they travel from the boathouses to the starting point. In principle, both the main and return channels can be used for relay races and marathons.

The farthest starting positions were in the vicinity of the then village of Tatarovo, and the athletes finished near the village of Krylatskoye. A grandstand for 3,400 spectators, a sports building with a swimming pool, a hotel for athletes, gyms and a museum of rowing sports were built here. A boathouse with nineteen boxes is provided for storing boats.

When excavation work for the canal began in the 1960s, local residents began preparing to move to other areas. The first wave of demolitions took place in 1972, and during the preparation for the Olympics (1978-1979), the village of Krylatskoye completely disappeared. The residents’ consent to the move was not particularly asked; some ended up in Setun, and others in Chertanovo.

Krylatsky hills with modern buildings

The Rechnik gardening partnership was created in 1956 on the banks of the Moscow River in the Krylatskoye district opposite the picturesque Serebryany Bor. In the early 1960s, permission was received for the construction of outbuildings and houses for temporary residence. Subsequently, the country houses became the subject of a conflict: the gardeners did not obtain permission for capital development. Since 1998, this territory has been included in the environmental protection zone of Moskvoretsky Park; in 2006, river workers were warned that their land was not registered as their own, and checks followed on the legality of the construction of capital buildings. In January 2010, demolition of the village began, causing a public outcry: the owners protested against the liquidation of the village.

Over four decades, over 16,000 sports competitions and celebrations have been held on the rowing canal and its territory. The most significant are the 1980 Olympic Games, the Goodwill Games, and the annual Great Moscow Regatta.

During the 1980 Olympics, not only rowers competed in Krylatskoye, but also cyclists, for whom an indoor cycle track was built, and a bike path was laid along the hills. Between the canal and the cycle track, fields for archery were equipped; now this space is planted with young trees. During the Olympic Games, several sections of temporary stands were assembled at the finish line of the rowing channel, and the stationary one was renovated and tinted. In 1978, boathouses and a hotel for athletes appeared, and a large electronic scoreboard was installed on the island.

Kayaking and canoeing

The only thing that reminds us of the Olympic Games is a pillar with pictograms - hand-drawn symbols of sports. Such structures were then installed near all sports facilities. Over time, new ones were added to the original pictograms - bowling and badminton.

Not so long ago, there were wooden benches for spectators in the stands, old referee towers along the riverbed, and a scoreboard from the Olympics on the island.

The Rowing Canal existed in this form until 2011, before the start of its large-scale reconstruction. I do not rule out that Dmitry Medvedev, who was fond of rowing and, already being the President of Russia, attended international competitions on the rowing canal as an honorary guest, had a hand in Krylatsky’s transformation. On June 22, 2014, he watched the President's Cup kayaking and canoeing competition.

On August 6-10, 2014, the World Kayak and Canoe Championships will be held in Moscow. For this event, the stands have already been modernized, a new finishing tower has been built, a modern electronic scoreboard has been installed on the island, the boathouses are being reconstructed and a hotel is being built. Since the rowing canal is located on the territory of the Moskvoretsky Park, the transformations should not disturb the existing natural landscape.

In addition to the actual rowing starts, in different years the USSR championships in water skiing, the World Championships and Russian championships in fishing, competitions in boat modeling, aquabike and wakeboarding, mass starts of swimmers (there is such a discipline as open water swimming) were held here. In winter, the surrounding area of the canal is used for skiing competitions, an ice skating rink is built, and “Winter Spartakiads” in table tennis, checkers and chess are held in the halls. The rowing canal infrastructure can be used for auto racing.

For Russia, racing on Dragon boats is an exotic spectacle

Extreme Sports Festival - Adrenaline Games

Rally drivers occupied the Krylatsky Hills many years ago; back then these were truly extreme races in difficult conditions. Now racing drivers start at the stands of the rowing canal and set off along the turns of the asphalt bicycle track laid out for the Olympic starts.

Among the promising plans is the construction of a canupolo stadium on the island. In Russia, this sport began to be practiced in 1998, although its history began much earlier. English prints from 1880-1885 show people on boats playing ball with oars. In 1926, the rules of a game called "canupolo" were published in Germany. Then they played in a water area comparable in size to a football field, the playing time was two halves of 45 minutes, there were eleven players in a team (as in football). Later, the rules were improved, and their own versions of the game arose in France and Australia.

The presentation of canupolo in Krylatskoye could be seen at the President's Cup in June, the game turned out to be quite spectacular and I wanted to know more about this curiosity. Modern canupolo is played by two teams of five people kayaking in a fenced area of calm water measuring 35 by 23 meters. The team that throws more balls into the goal, suspended at a height of two meters, wins. The ball is waterproof, weighing 400-450 grams, and is used in water polo. Game time is two halves of 10 minutes. You can throw the ball with your hands or with a paddle, you can attack the player holding the ball, and try to overturn his kayak. From the outside, all this looks quite dangerous, so the athlete’s mandatory equipment includes a protective helmet with a visor and a life jacket. The current version of the rules was published by the International Canoe Federation (ICF) in 1990.

The match starts with a swim between two sprinters who try to be the first to take possession of the ball. And then a ten-minute action begins with waving oars, passing, shooting at the goal (which I would like to call a basket in basketball). It is not at all easy to hit the goal; the defending side raises its oars, blocking the path of the ball flying towards the target. In a power struggle, the kayaks can capsize, but the player sits tightly in the boat, and the boat immediately returns to the surface position. By the way, canupolo boats are made using Kevlar, carbon fiber, polyethylene, the bow and stern are rounded and equipped with soft bumpers.

A silver “flying saucer” landed a hundred meters from the return channel of the canal in 2006. The Dynamo Sports Palace with stands for 5,000 spectators is designed for training and competitions in team sports. It is the home court for the Dynamo women's and men's basketball teams and the Dynamo futsal team. The arena can be transformed to host tournaments in other sports, for example, for boxing fights.

Lately, the pace of life in the metropolis has become catastrophically fast. Therefore, not all fishermen have time to go on a serious fishing trip outside the capital, and even for more than one day.

In fact, within Moscow there are many places where you can go fishing, even if only for a couple or three hours and run around with a jig or spoon. Some of these places will be discussed in this article.

Rowing canal "Krylatskoye".

The Krylatskoye Olympic rowing canal was built for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.

This reservoir is of greatest interest in winter due to the first and last ice, because the rest of the time it hosts car and motorcycle races. But as long as the ice is thin enough, the channel is completely at the disposal of anglers.

The channel has the shape of an elongated rectangle. A long island divides it into two parts - a wide main channel and a narrow bypass. The depth of the main one in winter at low water levels is about 3 meters, the bypass one is 2.5 meters.

The bottom topography is almost the same along the entire length of the canal; it is a flat table without pronounced differences. In only one place on the bypass channel there is a depression 30 meters long; here the depth reaches 4.5 meters. The bottom is sandy, silted in places.

The target fish species are perch and roach. Their size is generally small, but the bite is quite stable.

The best results here can be achieved using a fishing rod with a nod and a jig. Although the fish in the canal are distributed quite evenly (it is no coincidence that fishing tournaments have been held here many times), and you can catch them without bait, constantly drilling new holes, my tactics are still based on feeding pinches of small bloodworms.

This tactic justifies itself, because the fish here respond well to feeding with bloodworms.

The relatively shallow depth and lack of current allow you to feed fish by hand. By throwing bait from above, I achieve a better effect than when using a feeder, because, firstly, the fish are collected from the entire thickness of the water in the bottom layer, and there is no need to spend time searching for them vertically, and secondly, they approach from a greater distance , thirdly, I spend much less time feeding than using a feeder.

The best feeding option, although somewhat time-consuming, is the “combined feeding” method. Its essence consists in feeding with the hand from above, as described above, and with the feeder directly on the bottom. Thus, I achieve maximum effect and take advantage of both methods - the fish are collected from all layers of water at the bottom and concentrated right under the hole!

I didn’t find any characteristic differences in catching perch and roach in this reservoir; they are caught here interspersed, but perch predominates. I refused to use plant baits here for roaches, because, in my opinion, in winter they do not bring the same effect here as in summer. True, there are differences in playing with a jig, and my game for roach is almost always more measured and slower than for perch. Very often, roaches are caught exclusively with slowly falling bait.

Since the size of the fish here is generally small, I use appropriate gear. Line - 0.05-0.09, jig - 1.5 - 3 mm. Shape and color, as a rule, do not play a special role; the size and nature of the game with the bait influence more. I will not dwell on the game in detail here, I will only say that it should be quite active, with a high frequency of oscillations, a small amplitude and not too fast a speed. Also, don’t forget to try putting the jig on the bottom from time to time - fishing “on the riser” also brings additional bites. The nozzle is almost always small or large bloodworms.

This is a reservoir of a completely different type. It was formed in 1937 and is one of the links in the reservoirs of the watershed pool of the canal named after. Moscow. The depths here are different, the average depth of the reservoir is 7-8 meters, the maximum is under 20.

Fishing is usually carried out at depths of up to 5-6 meters, with the exception of fishing for pike perch, which is caught at 16 meters. The ichthyofauna of this reservoir includes more than a dozen species of fish. But the main objects of fishing here in winter are perch - with jigs and pike perch - with jigs and spinners. Ruff, roach, bream, and goby are less likely to bite.

In winter, especially on the first ice, almost no one leaves here without a catch. Small perch respond well to almost any winter bait. But you need to look for large fish here; they are not found everywhere.

The bottom of the reservoir is very heterogeneous, so the chances of a good catch increase sharply when you manage to detect some underwater hump or spit.

Under the shore, there are small perch almost everywhere, and there are also pleasant surprises in the form of large humpback whales. This happens more often in mid and late winter. I prefer to fish here with a jig.

I choose tackle depending on the season and the activity of the fish. A stock of ten fishing rods allows you to almost always choose the most catchy one on a particular day.

When there is first ice, I take coarser tackle, as the fish are very active. In the dead of winter, when the fish have minimal activity, I use a fishing line of 0.05-0.07 mm, jigs up to 2.5 mm.

According to my many years of observations, well-polished copper jigs of medium size work best here on first ice; the fish sees their shine from a greater distance.

Then, as the ice thickness increases, the color of the jig will no longer play a big role, and more attention should be paid to its size; the smaller, the greater the chance of tempting passive fish to bite.

My fishing tactics on this reservoir, as well as on most others, is to actively search for the most promising places. I determine them using a depth gauge feeder, that is, I simultaneously feed the fish with a small feeder and measure the depth. The depth gauge is designed as follows: on a fishing line, which is wound for convenience on a trolling rod with a large drum (ideally with a gearbox), I glue colored cambrics every half meter, and then I determine the depth from them. A feeder is attached to the end using a carabiner. The fishing line for the depth gauge needs to be stronger - 0.28-0.35 is quite suitable.

I glue the cambrics, which are tags, onto the knots for better fixation. In order to quickly find a good place, I drill two parallel lines of holes from the shore into depth at a distance of 15-20 meters from each other, drilling holes in each line after 5-10 meters. This way you can get an idea of the bottom topography at the fishing site. I drill out the most interesting places more carefully and fish them. This tactic almost always brings positive results.

Tsaritsyn Ponds.

These ponds, located in the southeast of the capital, were built in the 18th century. The Tsaritsyn ponds system includes two ponds: Upper (17 hectares) - average depth 3 meters and Lower (53 hectares) - average depth 2.5 meters. In my opinion, the Nizhnetsaritsynsky pond is of greater interest in winter, because it has more flow and the ice on it is always thinner than on the Upper. The bottom of the reservoir is flat, heavily silted, without any pronounced features. The depth gradually decreases from the shore.

Since the pond was formed by a dam on the Gorodnya River, there is a weak current, but it is felt only in the middle of the pond. The main trophies for fishermen here are perch and roach, often of impressive size; towards the end of winter, crucian carp bites occur.

My fishing practice on this reservoir is mainly related to roach and perch, and we will talk about them.

To catch these fish, I use small jigs from 1.2 to 2.2 mm, and their color practically does not affect the number of bites here, due to the fact that the water is opaque.

The fishing tactics here are very similar to those that I use on the Grebnoy Canal, but there are also some differences. In particular, this applies to feeding fish - perch and roach are often caught interchangeably, therefore, in order to attract more roach and cut off the perch, which mainly bites small ones, I use clean, slightly moistened vegetable bait without adding bloodworms.

I don’t go crazy with bait and usually feed with pure wheat or rye breadcrumbs (not corn, which stick together when moistened), but they must be extremely fresh. You can also use special branded roach winter bait, mixed with breadcrumbs 50/50, better, of course, than those from foreign manufacturers.

I don’t use a feeder here, and pour the bait into the hole from above to create a column and attract fish from a greater distance, and I lower part of the bait in the form of a small lump in order to concentrate the fish directly under the hole. With this method of feeding, the most natural and effective option for presenting bait will be to slowly lower the jig in the water column to the bottom, and the slower the lowering, the more bites. I usually put the jig down without hesitation, but you should always try different options to catch more fish.

When catching roach, it is better to try as deep as possible - this way you have a better chance of catching a larger one.

Perch usually stays here in the coastal part of the reservoir. It is better to feed it with small feed bloodworms from your hand. The jigs are the same as those used when fishing for roach. I usually plant one or two small bloodworms. Replanting Chernobyl larvae also gives good results.

SUP surfing in Moscow is already quite popular, but many people wonder where they can try it or where they can ride their own board.

This question is by no means an idle one, there seems to be plenty of water in Moscow, including the Moscow River, the diversion canal, the backwaters, the Yauza, the Klyazma, the rowing canal, ponds, and lakes. However, everyone knows that riding on most of these reservoirs is prohibited. But few people really know which ones and in which places of the reservoir. Even GIMS employees often do not know exactly the laws regulating the movement of small vessels within the city.

By the way, here is one more point. The fact is that SUP is not included in the list of sports in the Russian Federation, and therefore what a SUP board is, each GIMS inspector interprets as he wants. One person will regard a SUP board as an inflatable rowing boat, while another will regard it as an air mattress. Accordingly, the rider will be subject to one or another law. Our club is trying to solve this problem.

Therefore, in this article we will tell you where they actually ride, i.e. where it’s beautiful, clean and not touched by inspectors. And one can argue for a long time about whether it is legal to ride there or not, taking into account the conflicts of current legislation and its interpretations. In any case, when riding a SAP in Moscow, you need to be prepared to pay a fine of 1000 rubles. for riding in the wrong place.

Let's start with the fact that if you don't have your own board, there are several rental points in Moscow:

  • River Club, "Scarlet Sails" (our rental, SUP club) + free test drive
  • To Strogino

There are hourly board rentals and training with an instructor.

There are places where you can rent a board daily and ride wherever you want:

  • SUP club (SUP walks and tours)
  • Serebryany Bor (SUP trips)
  • Nimble SUP (daily rental)
  • Royal SUP (SUP tours)

On the beaches where you can swim

In 2017, 9 beaches were equipped in Moscow in areas permitted for swimming, namely:

  • White Lake in Reutovo
  • Serebryany Bor beaches-3 and 4, Bora Bora beach (M. Belorusskaya, Begovaya, Polezhaevskaya, Serebryany Bor)
  • Left Bank (M. Rechnoy Vokzal station)
  • "Royal Bar" (M. Vodny Stadium)
  • Meshcherskoye Lake (M. Slavyansky Boulevard station)
  • Troparevsky Pond (M. Teply Stan station)
  • Big garden pond (metro station Timiryazevskaya)
  • Black Lake in Zelenograd
  • School lake in Zelenograd

The Black Lake in Zelenograd is very small, there is simply nowhere to skate here. And in good weather there are a lot of swimmers. You won’t be able to ride on Left Bank Beach either. 500 meters from it is the navigable part of the canal named after. Moscow and the GIMS post. As soon as the inspector catches the eye of a rider, he rushes off in a boat to chase him away. No admonitions that there is still a kilometer to the fairway do not work.

Our SUP club station is located in “Scarlet Sails”. Come, it’s comfortable here: restaurant, parking, changing rooms, toilets, showers.

Details about the routes can be obtained from the managers of the SUP club by phone or on social networks.

Our SUP club took the initiative to the Department of Environmental Management to create a SUP rider map that would indicate the places allowed for skiing. We are looking forward to the department’s inclusion in the work on this map.
