Curse of eternal youth. Alternative medicine The worst punishment

Curse of eternal youth. Alternative medicine The worst punishment

Hello to all seekers of Truth! I often began to notice that many of the forum participants speak and mention the desire to live “Eternal life”, and not “Eternal life of the soul”, but namely the eternal life of our flesh, bodily shell. And I wanted to search for the sake of interest in books, what is bodily immortality from the point of view of different cultures and times. The answer was everywhere not comforting, everywhere there was a mention of some way to gain eternal youth or eternal life, but it was described exclusively as - the most terrible punishment that a mortal could suffer, for he always paid for immortality with the same coin - with his soul , and immortality, as a rule, turned out to be not what people wanted to see it, but the life of dead decaying corpses. Below I have presented the legends found from books and Internet links:

1) Ancient Greece:

Ambrosia(more precisely, Ambrosia, Greek ἀμβροσία, "immortality") in Ancient Greece is the legendary food of the gods, giving them youth and immortality. According to Onians, it is the divine equivalent of oil and fat. Ambrosia, being a drunken mortal, took all the vital forces out of him and killed him, turning him into a living dead, a skinny and thin person who became a slave of Hades.

It was invented by Demeter; or it is produced daily by the moon. Sometimes, for example in Sappho, the concept of ambrosia was mixed with the concept of nectar (the drink of the gods).

2) Chavanprash is mentioned in the most ancient medical Ayurvedic canons, such as Dhanvantari Samhita, Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya Samhita. The legend about the origin of Chyawanprash says:

A sage named Chavan, who lived twelve thousand years ago, feeling the approach of old age and illnesses, turned for help to Ashvini Kumaras - twin brothers who practice Ayurveda on the higher material planets. Knowing about his righteousness and virtue, Ashvini Kumara bestowed upon him the recipe for the "Elixir of Youth". The sage went to the foothills of the Himalayas and collected there forty-nine herbs and minerals indicated in the recipe. For three days, he prepared a miraculous elixir, which he took every year for 108 days. They say that he lived after that for another thousand years and left this world without signs of old age and disease. Since then, this remedy has been named after the sage Chavan. However, it is also said that the one who tastes this drink will become cursed and will not be able to enter Paradise after death.

3) Philosopher's Stone

One of the options for obtaining the elixir of life was supposed to be a philosopher's stone (lat. Lapis philosophorum), another main purpose of which was the transformation of base metals into gold. Nicholas Flamel, lived in France in the fourteenth century and is believed to have learned how to make the Philosopher's Stone. There are references to him (and how he was seen) over the centuries, since it is assumed that he gained immortality. He and his wife, Perenella, dedicated their lives to creating an "eternal elixir." True alchemists did not strive to obtain gold, it was only a tool, not a goal (nevertheless, Dante in his Divine Comedy determined the place of alchemists, like counterfeiters, in hell, or more precisely, in the eighth circle, the tenth moat). The goal for them was the Philosopher's Stone itself. And spiritual liberation, exaltation, given to the one who possesses it, is absolute freedom (it should be noted that a stone, by and large, is not a stone at all, more often it is presented as a powder, or a solution of powder is the very elixir of life). Although the use of this artifact did not have dire consequences, it could take the soul of a person who used the philosopher's stone for selfish purposes.

4) Amrita

Amrita (Skt. अमृत, amṛta ?, "immortal") - in Hindu mythology - the drink of the gods, making them immortal. Tradition says that amrita was obtained by churning the sea of milk (ksirodamathana). Amrita was delivered to the gods by Mohini. The one who dared to drink it doomed himself to eternal life in misfortune and suffering, as cursed by the Gods.

5) The sale of a soul, to demons, the devil, lower Gods, spirits, beings from other dimensions, appears in all religions, legends and life, as a rule is meant - a deal between a mortal and a creature from another world, where the price of immortality is the human soul and his life in the period of its eternal existence. But as a rule, this deal becomes a punishment for careless mortals, which proceeds in various ways:

Deal with the devil by his servants- a cursed life and, ultimately, even after 5000 years, with torments in fiery Gehenna, the Devil is patient and can wait for a soul as long as he wants.

A bargain with elves and fairies- immortal life in the form of a stone or a tree.

Deal with the inferior Gods- deception and eternal life in the form of a decaying corpse with no chance of death.

Perfume deal- the acquisition of immortality in becoming a cursed spirit, replacing his soul with the soul of the spirit, which, after the transmigration, occupied the body of a mortal.

6) Eitr of the eternal life of the Scandinavians.

A drink brewed by the cursed god Loki and, according to him, giving eternal life, but which is just a deadly poison that killed a mortal and doomed his soul to eternal wanderings in his own cursed decaying body. Such a spirit was angry with mortals and found comfort in killing living people and poisoning rivers and wells in which he used to spit.

7) Elixir found by the Conquistadors while exploring the Jungle in search of El Dorado. This elixir did not bring harm as such and was rather a mockery of mortals thirsting for immortality, the person continued to live as before, but when he looked in the mirror or into the water he always saw himself young, even if he was many years old.

8) Our science:

Is the removal of the SIR2 gene, known for five years as the anti-aging gene, from the body leading to a fantastic increase in life? as much as six times. These results have so far been confirmed in yeast and human liver cells.

Five years ago, Professor Leonard Guarente of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology performed a series of experiments showing that an extra copy of the SIR2 gene can significantly increase the life expectancy of the simplest microorganisms, such as yeast, fruit flies and some types of worms. Since then, a number of large pharmaceutical companies have been trying to create drugs based on the proteins encoded by this gene.

However, a group of scientists from the University of Southern California led by Valter Longo questioned the correctness of the conclusions and began their study of the SIR2 gene. The results of the just-ended experiment suggest that SIR2 does not fight aging, but, on the contrary, turns on the aging mechanism.

As it turned out during the experiment, the complete removal of SIR2 from the genome of the experimental microorganism, accompanied by the introduction of certain changes in the work of the RAS2 and SCH9 genes, which are responsible for storing nutrients in the cell and resisting damage to the cell membrane from adverse conditions, can lengthen the life span of the subject by about six times ... This effect was manifested not only in the case of yeast, but also in experiments on living human cells, according to a press release from the University of Southern California. That is, it can be assumed that SIR2 is more likely to take care that the organism leaves the arena of evolutionary confrontation in time, and does not create excessive mass character on it.

According to Professor Longo, the SIR2 gene (and its mammalian analogue SIRT2) does not allow cells to go into an emergency mode of operation when, under the influence of an unfavorable environment, they try to do everything possible to survive difficult times and eventually give new offspring, as they do , say, some pathogenic bacilli that protect themselves from drought, heat and cold with the help of? armored? dispute.

Long-lived cells lacking the SIR2 gene displayed a completely unusual ability to resist stress. Despite the fact that scientists affected the modified cells with oxidants and hot air, the cells stubbornly clung to life, although ordinary cells would have died long ago.

However, in the case of the experiment, one interesting feature was revealed - during the experiments on mice, the experimental samples began to show aggression and a decrease in the work of brain activity, as a result, the mice became a kind of - dead during life. And based on this, I can assume that all those legends that exist in different cultures have real moments in them. Can we assume the fact that ancient scientists were able to find a drink that could completely rid cells of the aging gene, and with those people who drank it, the same story happened as with laboratory mice? They degraded mentally and physically and became literally angry, aggressive zombies, like mice? And the madness that prevailed over people and seemed then the release of devilish forces from the body of the one who risked trying the elixir on himself? Perhaps now our geneticists are repeating the sad experience of our ancestors who warned not to use the elixir of immortality, since the price for its use was very high.

Therefore, one should not joke with nature, our body is just a temporary shell, and one should not hold on to it, death should not be afraid; in the end, it is not the end, it is only the beginning.

Two eternal questions of being

For many people, the terms eternal life and eternal damnation are meaningless word formations, because what they indicate has nothing to do with everyday needs and concerns. This lies outside the sphere of their purely material interests, and therefore, they believe, and it is not worth focusing on this.

What else is eternal life? What is this eternal damnation about? What does this have to do with making money? Let us die - the end of everything! In the meantime, this end has not come, you need to ensure yourself and your loved ones a "dignified existence". - Such is, or approximately such, the life position of many representatives of our society. And such representatives, unfortunately, are in the majority today. And this majority determines the main direction of the movement of all mankind: down, not up. Into darkness, not to Light. What this state of affairs will ultimately lead to, everyone who has enough internal strength not to succumb to the general slide into the abyss and to seriously engage in the search for answers to the eternal questions of life will easily understand what this state of affairs will lead to. Among these questions are these two: What is eternal life? What is eternal damnation?

However, we have to state the following fact: many people have already atrophied the ability to rise with their being above the material and transitory in order to explore questions that go beyond the earthly. Unfortunately, even those in whom there is a religious will that prompts them to break out of the circle of purely material concerns, which the overwhelming majority live on today, often turn out to be incapable of such research.

Their attempts to soar turn out to be limited by the fact that they literally cling to a stranglehold on this or that kind of church teaching. We are no longer talking about further independent search and research! However, only what a person acquires, following the path of independent search and research, has real value for him. It lives in him, being the source of a conviction that can not be shaken by any doubts and attacks of skeptics.

Blind faith in church institutions has no such real value. Deprived of life, she is the source of religious fanaticism, narrow-mindedness and conceit. It is the cover under which false knowledge tries to cowardly hide from the rays of Truth. For those who do not dare to throw this veil away, rushing towards the Truth, it will most likely become the burial vault of their spirit, where the last hope of salvation will fade away.

From the point of view of the spirit ...

For an earthly person, the question of eternal life is inseparable from the question of eternal damnation. Moreover, an attempt to understand these issues is doomed to failure in advance, if it is limited to the earthly, material plane. A much broader perspective is needed here, which can only be obtained from the point of view of the spirit.

Spirit has nothing to do with materiality, although it is connected with matter for the purpose of its development. Just as the seed grain must sink into the soil in order to find the strength there to become a mature plant, so the human spiritual embryo, or the unconscious seed of the spirit, plunges into the materiality of the Universe in order to develop or grow into a mature spirit with personal consciousness. This is a long process by human standards, which cannot be completed during one earthly life.

When it is said in religious texts that God gives a person only one life, which he, of his own free choice, can direct to salvation or to destruction, then there is no mistake. Erroneous interpretations of this in itself a correct statement, trying to limit the concept of human life only to the earthly plane, that is, to reduce this concept to a short period of one earthly existence. This misunderstanding is ingrained in the minds of many believers, serving as a source of further delusion. It is like a fragile cornerstone that will inevitably cause the collapse of the entire building if it is not timely replaced with a stone made of durable and high-quality material.

Just as the concept of man cannot be reduced to considering only the earthly body, so the concept of human life cannot be limited to a short segment of earthly existence!

The soil into which the unconscious seeds of human spirituality are immersed, in which they ripen, becoming mature spirits endowed with personal consciousness - this is the materiality of the Universe. The Universe is located below the area of Creation, which is the original homeland of the seeds of the spirit, and which in religious texts is called the Kingdom of the Spirit, Paradise, the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of the Spirit and the Universe, taken together, represent an aggregate Creation, created according to the uniform and unchanging Laws of Creation, the Laws of Divine Will.

In the materiality of the Universe, everything is subject to the processes of generation, maturation, overripe and decay. Absolutely everything, large and small, moves along this circle in materiality. The cycle of materiality itself is eternal, but not what is inside this cycle! Each form that arises in the Universe under the influence of higher forces, from the moment of its inception, is doomed to decay. Giant parts of the Universe, galaxies inside these parts, solar systems, individual celestial bodies, all forms of stones, plants, animals, etc., down to the smallest building particles of materiality - atoms , electrons, etc. And that is precisely why it makes no sense to talk about the eternal life of the earthly body - the coarsest shell of the human spirit. Therefore, all theories, scientific or religious, trying to talk about the immortality of an earthly person are untenable in the face of Truth. They do not stand up to the test from the point of view of the Laws of Creation.

So, materiality, subtle or gross, serves only as a shell for the spirit. The densest and coarsest shell is the earthly body; an instrument necessary for the activity of the spirit on the earthly plane.

When a spiritual seed is immersed in the Universe, it is first enveloped by the most subtle kind of materiality, which is located closest to the Spiritual Kingdom. Before the spiritual seed descends down to the earthly level, it must clothe itself in several material shells, and each subsequent shell is denser and coarser than the previous one. And only on Earth does the spiritual seed clothe itself in the densest shell - a coarse material earthly body. Under the cover of all these shells, the spiritual seed must ripen, becoming a mature spirit endowed with self-awareness. This is a long process, during which the spiritual seed takes many earthly lives, between which periods of stay in the other world follow. Moreover, in all these accomplishments and metamorphoses there is no arbitrariness or accident. Absolutely everything is determined by the action of the Laws of Creation, which reward everyone exactly (down to the smallest shades of good and evil) that he himself placed in the Creation by his actions. This is how each person creates his own destiny, that is, the path that he will have to walk in the earthly or the afterlife.

Separation of spirit from materiality and the need for a decisive choice

The period that spiritual seeds are allotted for ripening in the Universe, although very long by our standards, is not infinite. Those who admit that the development of the human spirit in materiality will continue for as long as desired, interrupted and renewed, are mistaken, until all developing human spirits in one or another part of the Universe successfully achieve perfection in their development. As in a small annual cycle, plant seeds are given a period limited by the spring-summer period for ripening, so in a much longer cycle of development of spirit seeds in materiality, a kind of autumn-winter period awaits them, when the possibilities of development will be set a limit. For spiritual seeds, this means a decisive choice. This is what in all religions is called the Last Judgment.

The Last Judgment is the separation of spirit from materiality, which has entered the time of its over-ripeness; a completely natural process, wholly and completely conditioned by the operation of the Laws of Creation. The aggregate materiality overripens, disintegrates into primary elements, so that later it will be reborn in new forms for the further development of Creation. And with the beginning of the Last Judgment, human spirits are faced with the following alternative:

1. Or the human spirit will be so mature that it will be able to leave the aggregate materiality in time, leaving behind all material shells. Moving from level to level, he will be cleansed of everything alien, base, and like a mature, self-aware spirit that has proven its right to eternal life, he will return to his original homeland, to Paradise, where nothing is subject to decay. Abiding at the peak of bliss, he will eternally work together with such perfect spirits as he is, contributing to the further development and prosperity of the total Creation.

2. Or the human spirit, due to its spiritual laziness, will be unable to leave materiality in time, will get stuck in it and will be pulled into the zone of decay. His personal consciousness will undergo decay, so that in the end he will have nothing left for him. This is the so-called eternal damnation - spiritual death, more terrible than which for the human spirit there is nothing. Man himself condemns himself to destruction, gradually losing personal consciousness in terrible agony and again becoming an unconscious spiritual seed. For him, these torments will seem to last an eternity, although they, of course, will come to an end when nothing more will remain of the personal consciousness. Such a spiritual seed will be released from materiality at the end of its decomposition and will return to the Kingdom of the Spirit, ignominiously missing the opportunity given to him to gain eternal life in Paradise as a conscious spiritual personality.

As you can see, earthly death in these magnificent accomplishments does not mean anything. Here, only the inner position of each specific human spirit is important. Whether this is about an earthly person, or about a human soul that does not have an earthly body, this also does not play a special role. However, the fact that many earthly people do not want to know anything other than the pursuit of earthly goods and pleasures is a sure indicator of their, possibly, a fatal choice in the direction of spiritual death. They themselves doom themselves to torment, much more terrible than illness or any other suffering of an earthly body can bring to an earthly person.

Tradition says that when Christ was led to deliver him to a painful execution, the instrument of execution, a heavy wooden cross, he carried on himself. His path to the place of the crucifixion was difficult and long. The exhausted Christ wanted to lean against the wall of one of the houses to rest, but the owner of this house, named Ahasuer, did not allow him.

- Go! Go! - he shouted under the approving glances of the Pharisees. There is nothing to rest!

- Well, Christ unclenched his parched lips. But you, too, will walk your whole life. You will wander in the world forever, and you will never have peace or death ...

Perhaps this legend was eventually forgotten, like many others, if after that, from century to century, here and there, there did not appear a man whom many identified with the personality of the immortal Ahasuerus. The Italian astrologer Guido Bonatti wrote about him, the same one whom Dante in his "Divine Comedy" was pleased to put in hell. In 1223, Bonatti met him at the Spanish court. According to him, this man was once cursed by Christ and therefore could not die. Five years later, he is mentioned by an entry made in the chronicle of the Abbey of St. Albana (England). It tells about the visit of the Abbey by the Archbishop of Armenia. When asked if he had heard anything about the immortal wanderer Ahasfera, the archbishop replied that he had not only heard, but had personally spoken to him several times. This man, according to him, was at that time in Armenia, he was wise, he had seen a lot and knows a lot, in conversation, however, he is restrained and talks about something only if asked about it. He well remembers the events of more than a thousand years ago, remembers the appearance of the apostles and many details of the life of those years, which no one living today knows about. The next message dates back to 1242, when this man appears in France. Then silence reigns for a long time, which is broken only after two and a half centuries. In 1505, Hagasfer was declared in Bohemia, a few years later he was seen in the Arab East, and in 1547 he was again in Europe, in Hamburg. The bishop of Schleswig Paul von Eitazen (1522-1598) tells about the meeting and conversation with him in his notes. According to his testimony, this man spoke all languages without the slightest accent. He led a secluded and ascetic lifestyle, had no property, except for the dress that was on him. If anyone gave him money, he gave every last coin to the poor. In 1575 he was seen in Spain, here the papal legates at the Spanish court Christopher Krause and Jacob Hol-stein talked to him. In 1599 he was seen in Vienna, from where he was heading to Poland, intending to reach Moscow. Soon he actually appears in Moscow, where many allegedly also saw him and talked to him. In 1603, he appears in Lubeck, which was attested by the burgomaster Kolerus, the historian and theologian Kmover and other officials. “Last 1603, on January 14, a famous immortal Jew appeared in Lübeck, whom Christ, going to crucifixion, condemned to redemption,” says the city chronicle. In 1604 we find this strange person in Paris, in 1633 in Hamburg, in 1640 in Brussels. In 1642 he appears on the streets of Leipzig, in 1658 - in Stamford (Great Britain). When the eternal wanderer reappeared in England at the end of the 17th century, the skeptical English decided to check whether he was really who he was mistaken for. Oxford and Cambridge sent their professors, who gave him a biased exam. However, his knowledge in ancient history, in the geography of the most remote corners of the Earth, which he visited or allegedly visited, was amazing. When suddenly asked a question in Arabic, he answered in that language without the slightest accent. He spoke almost all languages, both European and Eastern. Soon this man appears in Denmark, and then in Sweden, where traces of him are lost again.

Curse with eternal life

Jehovah was already dumbfounded by such sheer sedition and, having lost his composure, angrily uttered:

And now you are cursed from the earth! When you cultivate it, it will no longer give its strength to you. You will be an exile and a wanderer on earth.

Existing! Your punishment is greater than a person can bear. I will hide from your face and will be an exile and a wanderer on earth, and everyone who meets me will kill me.

Anyone who kills Cain will be avenged sevenfold. Do not be scared!

This is how the Lord God punished Cain with Eternal Life! Please note that later the servants of God will promise eternal life as a great blessing ... Well, and you would like to live forever, outlive your children and grandchildren, bury them, and then see your great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren completely alien to you and live in someone else's, completely unfamiliar society?

And Cain departed from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod, east of Eden. And he began to live there. And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore him a son, Enoch ...

Ba-ba-ba! Know your wife? What kind of wife? Where did he find her? After all, our Jehovah created only two people: first Adam from the dust of the earth, and then Eve from the Eon rib ... Where did this Beautiful Stranger come from? However, why are these stupid questions “Where from? Where?" From a camel!

Cain was brought by his nameless wife numerous offspring ...

And Adam, out of grief from the loss of both sons, once again got to know Eve, his wife, and at that time they were not much, not little, but eight hundred years. Eve gave birth to a son, and she named him Seth, which means "given," because, she said, God gave me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain killed. And in total, Adam lived for nine hundred and thirty years ... Do not believe me? As you wish: for what I bought, for what I sell.

Chapter 3. About eternal torment and eternal life And these will go into eternal torment, but the righteous into eternal life. (Matthew 25:46) § 174. 5. The gift of eternal life. A new relationship with Christ brings with it the gift of eternal life. The legend of Agasphera, the Eternal Jew cursed by Christ, has been stirring the minds for over two thousand years. Many famous writers and poets have drawn inspiration from this ancient legend. Among them are Goethe, Borges and even our compatriot, the romantic poet Zhukovsky. However, few people know that Agasfer is not the only name of the Eternal Jew, and the legend itself has several variations.
The Legend of the Eternal Jew belongs to the apocryphal legends, that is, those that are not included in the set of sacred texts that make up the modern Bible. For the first time this legend was recorded in the XIII century from the words of the English monk Roger Wendversky and entered the "Big Chronicle" by Matthew of Paris.
This is what this legend says. At the same time / when Jesus Christ preached in Jerusalem and was condemned to death, a certain shoemaker named Ahaspher lived in the city. He was rich enough, had his own house and land. During his journey of the cross, the Savior asked the shoemaker to give him a rest near the house belonging to him. Hagasfer refused to Christ in this, thereby insulting him. For this, the Savior cursed the shoemaker, ordering him to wander the earth forever and not know anywhere either shelter or peace. And this will last until the time of the Last Judgment comes and the Savior returns again.
However, this legend has another option. According to him, Ahasfer not only refused Christ to rest near his house, but threw a stone at him and wounded him. And that's why the Savior cursed him.

A man with no name

Biblical scholars tend to believe that Ahasuerus is not the real name of the Eternal Jew. Strictly speaking, the Jewish people simply did not have such a name as Ahasfer, it is a so-called stylization.
In addition to the name Agasfer, researchers know at least three more names of the Eternal Jew: Espero-Dios, Butadeus and Cartafail. Espero-Dios means "trust in God", Butadeus means "who struck God", and Carthaelos means "watchman of the praetorium" (Roman guard). Under the last name the Eternal Jew is mentioned in the "Great Chronicle" of Matthew Paris. It is believed that this nickname is the oldest. However, what was the real name of the person who offended Christ?
It is very likely that now we will never know. In biblical times, it was believed that a person's name is mystically connected with his destiny. The fate of every person is to live life and after that in the grave to await the onset of the Last Judgment. Dooming Ahasfera to eternal wandering, the Savior, as it were, made an exception for him, brought him out of the circle of being of normal people. Thus, his fate is no longer part of the general fate of mankind.
For this reason, Ahasuerus does not have the right to bear the name he received at birth and is mystically connected with the fate of the world. Now he is an outcast, and an outcast is a person without a name, who has the right to wear only nicknames given to him by people. Even in our modern proverbs, this ancient form of detachment from the clan has been preserved: "You are now nobody, and there is no way to call you."

The worst punishment

It may seem rather strange to a modern person that the kind of punishment that the Savior chose for Ahasuerus. Indeed, in fact, Christ gave him immortality.
To better understand why immortality can be regarded as a terrible punishment, let us recall one of the most ancient Old Testament traditions - the legend of the first murderer Cain. As the Bible says, Cain, who killed his brother Abel, was not put to death for this. God forbade the killing of Cain by his fellow tribesmen and condemned him to eternal wanderings.
The genus, according to the most ancient ideas, protects a person from evil, all kinds of misfortunes, and also gives the right to create a family. Having lost his kind, a person becomes powerless, transcended the circles in which the world exists. The laws of being have no power over him, but he also has no power to influence other people in any way. He is deprived of the main goal of all people - to continue his race itself.
Man is a collective being, and, according to ancient people, loneliness is the most terrible punishment. Yes, and modern psychologists say that, according to surveys, the greatest fear in people is caused by loneliness, and not death, as is commonly believed.
As for immortality, its nature is now fully explainable from a mystical point of view. The laws of the universe ceased to rule over Ahasfer. He stopped, froze, waiting for the Second Coming, becoming a living witness of Christ, although by no means the best.

Outcast fate

So what happened to Ahasfer next, after Christ cursed him? There are many legends on this topic. The darkest of them says that he was imprisoned in the deepest dungeon behind nine castles, where he continuously walks around the pillar, naked and overgrown. This legend was most widespread in the 15th century, during the era of endless wars and the Inquisition.
However, there are also more optimistic versions. Thus, in the aforementioned "Big Chronicle" by Matthew of Paris, the story of one archbishop, who arrived in England from Greater Armenia, is recorded. He claimed to be personally acquainted with the offender of Christ. The priest claimed that he repented, was baptized and chose a new name for himself Joseph. The eternal Jew leads the life of an ascetic and only occasionally talks to the pilgrims who come to the monastery, telling them about his fate for edification.
There is a mention of him in the records of modern times. So, about the meeting with Ahasfer, it is written in a Mormon newspaper dated 1868. As for the Mormons, the adherents of this offshoot of the main line of Christianity have never been inclined to cheap sensations and hoaxes.
Most references to Ahasuerus depict him as a tall man with long hair. He is always dressed in old, shabby clothes, and sometimes just in rags. You can also recognize him by the question he always asks to people he meets on his way: "Is a man already walking with a cross?" After all, Agasfer still does not lose hope that Christ will forgive him after all.
As for age, there are completely different evidences. Some saw him in the guise of an ancient elder, others in the guise of a youth, and still others in the guise of a middle-aged man. Some understanding of where such contradictory statements could have come from is given to us by the same mention of the meeting with Ahasfer of the archbishop, who visited Armenia and communicated with him for quite a long time. According to him, the wanderer was cursed at the age of thirty. Since then, each time he grows old up to a hundred years, and after that he becomes thirty again. This can explain the different variants of his age in eyewitness accounts.

Grief messenger

Egasfer is not the only eternal wanderer on earth. Mythologists know two more such characters: the Wild Hunter and the Flying Dutchman. All these three legends are united not only by the fact that their characters remain on earth forever, until the Last Judgment, but also by the fact that their appearance is associated with some kind of natural disasters, war or disease.
In Western and Eastern Europe, the Agasfera is often seen before the outbreak of plague or the outbreak of war. Those who see him promise defeat. So, for example, in the decisive battle between the crusaders and the Saracens, one of the Templars, knights of the order of the Temple, during a night vigil, met a monk in torn clothes, who asked him if he had seen a man carrying a cross. The strange meeting turned into a bad omen - in this battle the crusaders not only suffered a crushing defeat, but also forever lost the Life-giving Cross, on which the Savior was crucified. By the way, it was the Templars who lost it, who carried the shrine into the thick of the battle, believing that it would help them win.
There is also a rather curious piece of evidence concerning almost our days. Friedrich Schrader, one of the Wehrmacht officers who got into the Stalingrad cauldron, survived captivity and then returned home, later recalled that once a man who had allegedly escaped from Soviet captivity was brought to him for interrogation. His face and hands bore obvious traces of frostbite, his hair was long, and his speech was confused and illegible. The only thing that the officer managed to remember: "This man was talking about some kind of cross and that he must find the one who carries it." Having failed to get anything intelligible from him, the officer ordered him to be shot the next morning. However, the prisoner managed to free himself and escape. On the same day, the command reported that the troops were surrounded.

Common noun

By our time, the name Agasfer has gradually become a household name, denoting a restless person who leads a hectic lifestyle and does not have firm plans for the future. Its other meaning is a person who, through his own fault, has made big problems for himself, which are very difficult to solve. It is curious that in modern psychiatry there is such a thing as "Agasfera syndrome". Typically, this definition includes drug addicts who abuse potent drugs. In order to get them, they rub themselves into the credibility of medical workers, inventing a colorful story about their serious illness.
The legend of Ahasfera had a fairly large impact on Christian culture, but from a mystical character he gradually turned into a hero of proverbs, sayings and even anecdotes. However, all the jokes about the Eternal Jew are pretty dangerous. Suddenly, somewhere on the street, one day we will meet a strange person who asks us: "Isn't a man already walking with a cross?" And then we will have no time for jokes.
