The Garmin chest heart rate monitor measures heart rate with ECG precision. And all because the sensor is placed under the user’s chest – i.e. The device reads information accurately. But! When using a device, you must take into account its specifics. This review will show you which Garmin heart rate monitor is best for you.

Chest heart rate monitors from Garmin

Three models with different purposes went on sale - for swimming, for running and a universal model. Garmin heart rate monitors vary in materials and features. The main purpose is heart rate monitoring. But! For example, the first device determines the type of swimming, counts laps, etc. It is made of a special waterproof material. The fastening that covers the chest is designed so as not to slip or fly off while swimming.

Use models according to their intended purpose. For example, if you measure the pulse with a swimming device, the user, along with the indicators, will receive irritation on the skin. There will be a build-up of sweat between the heart rate monitor and your body, which will cause the device to slide.

The design of each sample has its own characteristics and is “tailored” for a specific type of activity. The same goes for options. The heart rate monitor for swimming does not have functions that measure the load on the leg, step length, etc. And this is important for professional athletes.

Benefits of HRM-Tri

Another thing is the universal Garmin model:

  • Built-in three operating modes - running, swimming and gym
  • Thoughtful design and materials - suitable for all three workouts
  • Advanced functionality – individual for each operating mode

Like the two dedicated models, the Universal Chest Heart Rate Monitor comes with a watch. All information is displayed on them. It’s hard to say which model is cooler, because each of them has its own purpose. Let's take a closer look at the devices.

Model rating

RatingDescription
First place – Garmin HRM-TriIn the user circle, the first place is occupied by a universal sample, where there are three basic modes of operation (running, swimming, gym). Its popularity is due to its advanced functionality. The basic task is to measure heart rate. The difference is that each mode offers specialized functionality (meaning options such as measuring vertical oscillation in running or the frequency of arm swings in swimming).
Second place – Garmin HRM-SWIM and Garmin HRM-RUNThese devices took second place only because of their purpose. Those. Having purchased a device for running, the user will not be able to use it while swimming and vice versa. Both models concentrate only those functions that relate to a specific type of activity.

This article appeared thanks to the request of my viewers YouTube video channel explain and somehow classify the situation with chest-mounted cardio monitors/heart rate monitors from Garmin.

Garmin itself does not stand still, and every year it releases new and improved models to the market.

Therefore, in this article I have collected 4 proven and universal heart rate monitors with which I myself trained, rode a bike, went hiking, and swam.

In order to somehow clear the fog from the names and descriptions, I created a summary table, which is broken down by the functionality of each heart rate monitor. You can see the comparison table of HRM (cardio monitors, heart rate monitors) below in the text. There is also my video review :-).

Video review: Classification of modern Garmin heart rate monitors: tips, recommendations.

Let's start with the most important thing: why do you need Garmin chest heart rate monitors?

Last year of Garmin actively began to use optical pulse sensors in his watches and bracelets - these are models VivoActive HR, VivoSmart HR, Fenix 3 HR . On the one side it seems that now you don't seem to need a breastplate th heart rate monitor, because now you can constantly measure the pulse on your hand.

Yes, sure, you can find out your pulse in continuation day, but the additional statistics that are transmitted to the watch by the chest straps are more extensive and detailed.

For example, if you are swimming, the built-in heart rate monitor cannot take the pulse from your hand water , but a specially “sharpened” cardio monitor for swimming HRM-Swim() saves this data and conveys after leaving the water for hours.

The same goes for running - if you run, then after running with a watch (for example Garmin Fenix 3 HR), which has a built-in heart rate monitor, you will only get your heart rate and step frequency, in addition to other usual parameters - speed, pace, temperature.

But with a chest heart rate monitor HRM-RUN() you will already have the whole picture of running: step length, vertical oscillation of the body relative to the ground, time flying over

In general, if you need to know your heart rate only for general monitoring of your condition, there is no point in buying an additional external cardio monitor on a belt, but it is better to use an optical sensor on the hand of one of the new Garmin watch models.

Although being able to constantly monitor your pulse is also a good thing for those people who are actively involved in sports.

If you still want to go deeper into the data collection process and get expanded information about your sports training, you will need a wearable heart rate monitor - HRM (Heart Rate Monitor heart rate monitor - English)

It is better to take Garmin heart rate monitors already bundled with the gadget you need. This way they will cost less.

For example, I received my HRM-Run heart rate monitor bundled with my Garmin Fenix 3 HR watch. You will recognize it by the red cap on the transmitting platform.

If you already have a watch and, after reading my article, decide to get yourself a heart monitor, first of all, decide what you need it for?

Fitness, gym workouts:

If you go to the gym, fitness, training - you have enough GarminHRM-Premium(). It costs 70 dollars. USA.

This belt does not have an accelerometer, but only takes into account your heart rate during an activity or workout. I like it because of the soft, elastic material. And to save battery consumption, the transmitting platform itself can be detached.

In this graph, you can see the belt readings during your workout when the data has been uploaded to the Garmin Connect web service.

By the way, My first cardiac monitor was GarminHRM is a simple fitness model that came with a Vivofit activity tracker. Separately, it cost 49 dollars. USA.

The belt itself is used It was plastic. Shows only pulse. This is an old model of a heart rate monitor, but this old man practically understands most devices Garmin: from watches to navigators.

You can train with him, but for me personally, it wasn't very convenient. I had to wear a plastic belt across your chest. To be fair, I want to say that the “plasticity” of the belt is only on the chest, and on the sides it’s narrower are coming elastic straps.

Swimming:

If you swim constantly (at least 2-3 times a week), then to take your heart rate into account in the pool, you need GarminHRM-Swim(). The price of this heart rate monitor is 100 dollars. USA.

The peculiarity of this cardio monitor is that when you swim, it accumulates data about your heart rate. This is done because this ANT+ protocol, which the belt uses, cannot “break through” the layer of water in order to transmit information to the watch.

Therefore, the belt in the water stores data until the swimmer leaves the water and the data is reset to the watch from the belt.

Your in-water workout data using Garmin HRM-Swim will look like this:

At the same time, when you are outdoors, you can watch your heart rate on the chest heart rate monitor without any problems.

On my own behalf, I will say that wearing the Garmin Swim chest heart rate monitor on the street is not very comfortable, since its material is very sticky and clingy to the body. This is made so that it does not fly off when you swim or do somersaults in the pool. And the belt itself must withstand the aggressive effects of the reagents found in swimming pools. It will be very hot for you to wear it on your body outside, but just right in the water!

Run:

For runners, it is better to take a cardio monitor - Garmin HRM-RUN() which has an accelerometer built into it.

This heart rate monitor costs the same as HRM-SWIM – also $100. USA.

This monitor allows you to take into account additional data on running activity, for example: heart rate, step length, vertical oscillations of the body relative to the ground, time of flight between steps, loads on the athlete’s legs (left and right as a percentage).

Running with such a heart rate monitor is a pleasure - it is light, the elastic strap does not rub and fits well on the body. The size of the transmission site here is optimal. If you wear a belt, it will not stick out much on your T-shirt.

Running, swimming, cycling

If you run, swim, ride a bike, this cardio monitor will be useful for you.

The price of this device is 130 dollars. USA.

The only negative is that it is not designed for swimming pools, but only for open water swimming. The belt itself is not resistant to the aggressive effects of reagents that can be used in indoor swimming pools.

If you are a triathlete, this heart rate monitor is just for you. It collects a lot of additional information on sports activity.

How long does the battery last to operate the heart rate monitor?

All models presented in my review work from the same type of power - this is a tablet - a CR2032 3V battery

The service life of the belts without replacing the battery is on average more than 1 year or more.

The cheapest Garmin HRM model has a compartment that opens from the back -

An interesting solution of HRM-Premium - here the platform is detachable. This way you can reduce the battery life and easily wash the belt. The battery is located in the pad itself.

A series of new heart rate monitors for 2015 - HRM-SWIM, HRM-RUN, HRM-TRI – They have a rubber plug that covers the transmitter body. The block cover is secured with 4 bolts.

A rubber plug is used to protect the housing and provide an additional barrier to water and dust. Although the rubber gasket-ring also fits snugly in the middle of the case to protect the battery.

Which external sensors and chest-mounted Garmin heart rate monitors are best to choose depending on your activity.
