When will someone else's covenant 2 film come out. Five directions opened by the "Testament" to continue the story of Aliens

After “Alien. Resurrection "and" Prometheus "I did not have much hope of a good continuation. But not by the same amount. After watching this film, there was a desire to hug the unfortunate xenomorph, sobbing with despair on my shoulder, to comfort and stroke. it is completely incomprehensible to me why and for what it was necessary to stick this white abomination into the film? He reminded rather of a drug addict who had not eaten or left the house for a long time. Of course, in the alien universe it has been mentioned more than once that this species can mutate. But there is nothing to develop this topic so much. Everyone loves a stranger such as Hans Rudolf Giger created him, for which he became a world celebrity. This is one of the most beautiful in its ugliness invented monsters, it is immediately visible to fall, real power and ingenuity (thanks for being shown this way at the end of the film). Again, in the film, the topic of mutations was not really revealed, despite the explanations. No one is interested in it. Would you like to add variety, interest the viewer? It would be better to surprise with a well-developed plot.

Computer graphics and a beautiful picture are always pleasing to the eye. But not in the case of an alien universe. The gloomy and cold world of space in the first three films makes the atmosphere unique, emphasizes the importance of our planet and the fact that we must cherish and value it. Each fantasy universe should have its own style. "Prometheus" and "Alien. Testament "killed the style of this world completely.

Now about the human characters. How many times have they told the world ... From film to film about science fiction, where the characters must show sanity, professionalism and courage, we see delirium. Has any filmmaker ever wondered how people are selected and trained, on whose work the lives of others depend? About pilots, machinists, and the same surgeons. Can you imagine a surgeon performing a complex operation during which complications arose, and the doctor began to beat in a panic? Or a subway driver who jammed the passenger door and began to rush around the cabin? I know such people, I know what the most severe selection and training they undergo. Any professional knows. in an emergency. anything but panic. And here, even though in the world of the future, space travel has become much more accessible, but still, these are astronauts, pilots, officers, scientists, engineers and doctors. And everyone should be a super professional on such an important mission, not just a specialist. It's about a lot of money. The salvation of all mankind, of course, is not, but it is still the most important factor for the development of civilization. And here we see people recruited from an ad on the fence “Work in space. The pay is high. " Everyone knows the safety rules in the new world. No matter how cool the sensors scanning the planet are, only time and repeated and extensive research can give a complete picture of whether it is safe or not. Bacteria and allergens are one of the most important factors. And then we see a walk through the nearest forest park. They sniff with awe the incomprehensible black pollen from the incomprehensible mushrooms. For the removed helmets there were so many reproaches against "Prometheus". Panic and dull running around, at the first first "birth" from a human xenomorph is something. The stupidity of all the characters just hurts the eye. Did the filmmakers want to show that they are ordinary people? They are not ordinary people and the audience would be much more interesting to see people who are masters of their craft. This is already lacking in our modern life. Even the fights of the xenomorph and people, the killing of people, look pathetic and not interesting. Is there really not a single normal fighter in such a mission? Ripley didn't look like a real fighter or a super heroine. On the contrary, she was not a military man, but a person forced to fight for life, whose main weapon was character and survival instinct. They tried to pick up the new heroine externally under Ripley (short hair, simple appearance). Only Ripley had charisma. And this is some kind of propaganda of feminism (very often female characters began to do "either a woman or a man," as if tolerance). Well, without a hint of gomosyatinu, excuse me, it’s not done. At least briefly, at least robots, but it was imperative to cram. And, oh, horror, they forgot about the African Americans !!! Well, what about without them?

Philosophy and morality of the film. Of course, the film should not consist of murder and running from strangers. But attempts to show the morality of androids looks unconvincing, protracted and out of place. And Devin's scene with an albino alien, alien is a killing machine, the trust of such a flea did not give in to him in any way. The heads of strangers to the androids were just torn off, and only then they concluded that it was tasteless. "Better to be a master in hell than a servant in heaven"? A flea rules over a pack of wolves, but I believe, I believe ..

The great civilization that created people and aliens looks ridiculous and helpless. Several streets in the crater are all their greatness in terms of not just their planet, even the city. And why is this virus scary? Where did he go then?

Well, in general, delirium at every step, the destroyed idea and style of the world of strangers. And the xenomorph is the only sentient being in the entire movie.

And then out of respect for old films.

The iconic fantasy series of the 1980s are globally unlucky these days. For one lucky "Mad Max" there are also disgusting "Ghostbusters", and poor Terminator Genisys, and toothless remakes "Robocop" and "Remember all"... Fate "Predator" is still in question, but Shane Blake's scenario leaked into the network does not inspire much optimism so far. Except that Blade Runner Ridley Scott could get a worthy sequel under the leadership of Denis Villeneuve. But even here it is not worth guessing.

Meanwhile, Scott himself with his "Alien" turns at least freely. In 2012 "Prometheus" amazed the audience with luxurious sets and camera work, a dense atmosphere of dark science fiction ... and completely repulsed characters. Even drunken and anxious teenagers in other horror films did not allow themselves to be blunt as pundits and ladies who went to explore an alien planet did. Two members of the ill-fated expedition definitely earned the Darwin Prize, and the rest can be nominated.

It is known that the script for "Prometheus" was once rewritten from scratch, but this did not save the picture from giant plot holes, the catalysts of which are just brainless characters. And a brainless character in a serious film is very rarely able to evoke sympathy from the viewer. It was this aspect that for many buried the bold and original tape, which showed the familiar and beloved Aliens universe from a new angle.

So did it fix "Covenant" errors of "Prometheus"? Could you give your fans a dignified return of the most dangerous monster in the universe? Yes and no.

Destination

First of all, let us warn you that the promotional materials for the film, if not lying, are misleading. From the trailers, you can make the erroneous conclusion that the team, consisting entirely of couples in love, are the colonists sent to conquer and populate a new world. This entry caused a lot of controversy on the network, especially when it turned out that one of the couples is same-sex.

In fact, the presented team is only the crew of the "Covenant" spacecraft, and the settlers themselves, in the amount of two thousand, peacefully sleep in stasis on board. Yes, and they initially fly to the wrong planet, where they end up.

The heroes would have much less problems if they thought of putting on spacesuits during their first foray into an unfamiliar planet.

In terms of the plot, Ridley Scott turns the same scheme for the third time: the team receives a mysterious signal from an unexplored corner of space, climbs to check it, finds a ship of "engineers", encounters a dangerous life form, and as a result, most of the crew dies. There is no need to complain about spoilers - all this could have been predicted from the very first trailer. Here, the main value is not what shown, but in that how it is shown. Is it interesting to follow new heroes in a familiar situation? Probably not.

Daniels is so similar to Ripley that there were even rumors on the network that she was Ellen's mother.

Characters are perhaps the main problem of the "Testament". There are already fourteen people in the team (twice as many as in the original "Alien"), but only three of them are remembered. And Daniels performed by Catherine Waterston, flashing on every poster, unfortunately, is not one of them. It can be seen that Ridley Scott creates a new Ripley for the second time, but it does not work.

Ellen is rightfully considered one of the brightest heroines in the history of world cinema. Cool, but without kink, strong but human. The viewer managed to get to know her both as a reliable comrade, and as a professional in her field, and as a fearless woman capable of confronting a dangerous monster alone. And Sigourney Weaver played her so vividly and convincingly that she was even nominated for BAFTA and Saturn awards. And this despite the fact that film academics at all times turned up their noses from the "low" genre of horror.

For many years, the scene of the first appearance of the Breastbreaker in Alien was considered one of the most creepy and disgusting in cinema. Well, in this regard, Ridley Scott still beat himself young.

But Daniels from "Covenant" has only two states: grief and fear. Her story within the film begins with a great personal tragedy, but we have no idea what the heroine was before her and how this incident changed her. And all subsequent events do not push Daniels to any interesting metamorphosis.

Much more attention is drawn to the devout and insecure captain played by Billy Crudup and the charismatic pilot of Tennessee - the unexpected and very effective acting work of comedian Danny McBride.

All the rest can only be described as "cannon fodder." As in "Prometheus", the characters are godlessly stupid and die either due to their own inattention, or succumbing to panic and making a bunch of stupid mistakes. And none of them are sorry. Simply because for the viewer it is not a well-coordinated team, but a dozen people whom he saw so few that he did not even have time to remember the faces, let alone the names.

It sounds like blasphemy, but the neomorphs in the film inspire much more fear than the old familiar xenomorphs. Perhaps precisely because of its novelty.

The gospel of david

But, despite the confident work of Crudup, McBride and the same Waterston, Michael Fassbender confidently pulls the blanket over himself. The actor once again proves that he is great at infernal and charming antiheroes. Android David, who successfully survived the "Prometheus" finale, is a lot like Mads Mikkelsen's Hannibal Lecter. The same love for high art and philosophy, the same devilish light in the eyes and the same perverted ideas about love and goodness. The complete opposite of android Walter, simple and reliable. Fassbender's duet with himself is one of the best episodes of Covenant.

As well as the birth of a xenomorph. Yes, the Great Mystery of the Origin of Aliens has finally been revealed to us. Hooray? Whether you like it or not, now we have a definite answer to the question of where and why the legendary monster came from. True, the answer is rather trivial - other fan theories and versions from games, comics, novels were more original. But again, everything depends on the implementation. Almost every scene where neomorphs and xenomorphs are involved is beautiful. It is in these moments that the film becomes what it should be: a tough, bloody and inventive space horror. It is a pity that there are not so many of them.

Trailer

In 2019, the Alien franchise will celebrate its 40th anniversary, and it is possible that Fox will celebrate the anniversary on a grand scale.

In any case, the press credits the studio and Ridley Scott with the development of Alien: Awakening, which will link the events of Prometheus and Covenant.

This British director let slip about his desire to stage even before the start of "Testament" at the box office.

"Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant"

For a long time, Ridley Scott was not going to return to "Alien", believing that he had fully expressed himself in the 1979 tape. Without his participation, James Cameron directed "Aliens" (1986), David Fincher - "Alien 3" (1992), and Jean-Pierre Jeunet - "Alien: Resurrection" (1997).

If the sequel of Cameron is praised by critics and the public, then the third and fourth parts are usually ignored. Already in the 2000s. Scott became interested in xenomorphs again and decided to return to the old material.

Prometheus was a prequel to Alien. Scott is not interested in what his followers have filmed - he doesn't even take into account Cameron's Aliens.

In "Prometheus" the action develops at the end of the XXI century - Peter Weiland, the head of the Weyland Industries corporation, sponsors a space mission to the celestial body, where, presumably, the Creators live, they are Engineers - the race "guilty" of the emergence of mankind. Weiland is dying and hopes to learn from the Engineers the secret of eternal life.

The crew found the ship of the Creators, destroyed by a mysterious pathogen, but in the end, all members of the expedition died, except for the archaeologist Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and the android David (Michael Fassbender). They went to the homeland of the Engineers - the planet Paradise ...

It is interesting to note that "Prometheus" and "Testament" are the names of spaceships from the respective films.

And here we come to the events of the "Covenant". Initially, the tape was called "Alien: Paradise Lost", for distribution it was renamed into a shorter and more sonorous "Alien: Covenant". This is the sequel to "Prometheus", adjusted for the past 10 years.

In the spotlight are new characters played by Catherine Waterston and Billy Crudup. There was a place for Fassbender, but this time he appeared before the audience as Walter's android. Robot David also appeared in the frame - as an antagonist.

In the "Covenant" it was revealed that the ship of Shaw and David did arrive on the planet Paradise, where the android used a pathogen that instantly brought the Engineers to the grave. Then he set up experiments, trying to bring out a new creature - and nevertheless brought out the xenomorphs, familiar to the audience, who interrupted the team from the "Testament".

Alien: Awakening and Other Prometheus Sequels

Since 2012, when Prometheus was released, Scott has re-invented the universe associated with it more than once or twice. In it, by the way, the Queen of strangers and the adopted daughter of Ripley, introduced into the plot by Cameron, are absent.

In 2017, the director announced that if Covenant succeeds, he will take on the film that acts as a link between Prometheus and Covenant - Alien: Awakening.

The performance of "Prometheus" and "Testament" at the box office, alas, turned out to be not very convincing:

  • Prometheus: $ 130 million (budget) and $ 403 million (fees),
  • Alien: Covenant: $ 97 and 241 million

So now the fate of the franchise depends on the patience of Fox Studios.

Who Will Play Alien: The Awakening?

There are only two obvious candidates:

  • Michael Fassbender - Android David
  • Noomi Rapace - archaeologist Elizabeth Shaw.

It is unlikely that Ridley Scott will refuse to film artists with whom he worked well.

Alien 5 by Neil Blomkamp

The tape "Alien: Awakening" should not be confused with "Alien 5" by Neil Blomkamp, who became famous for his fantastic films "Elysium", "A Robot Called Chappy" and, of course, "District 9". Alien 5 is a direct sequel to Cameron's Aliens, leaving out the films of David Fincher and Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Blomkamp has agreed to take part in the filming of Sigourney Weaver (Lieutenant Ripley) and Michael Bean (Corporal Hicks). According to the scenario, however, the war with biomechanical creatures was mainly dealt with by the grown-up Newt, Ripley's adopted daughter.

Neil Blomkamp worked for a long time on the script and concepts for Alien 5, but in 2016-2017. the Fox company deliberately slowed down the development of the picture - to skip ahead of "Covenant" and "Awakening". Perhaps now the leadership is clutching its head - was the right decision made?

Conclusion

In the prequels to Alien, Scott focuses not on horror and xenomorphs, but on artificial intelligence and religion. It is possible that it is precisely because of this that they enjoy less success with the audience.

There is little doubt that Alien: The Awakening will take place - with a cut budget, but Ridley Scott will stage the picture. In the future plans of "Fox", according to the latest rumors, - restarting the sci-fi saga from scratch, in a different timeline and with new characters.

The article was written specifically for the site "2019 Year of the Pig": https: // site /

  • genre : horror, fantasy, thriller, adventure
  • Director : Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, The Martian)
  • Producer
  • Cast : Noomi Rapace (rumors), Michael Fassbender (rumors), etc.

Alien 5: Awakening will be released in 2019-2020. At this time, the premiere of a new chapter in the story of space explorers who have come face to face with a deadly alien danger in the form of bloodthirsty monsters is expected. The original name of the project is Alien: Awakening. So far he has it, but there is a high probability that closer to the release it will be changed, as it was with the same "Testament".

Alien: Paradise Lost

In 1979, Ridley Scott released his second full-length film, which will forever go down in the history of cinema. The slogan of the film "No one in space will hear your scream" is still decently so frightening, and the tape itself still looks great against the background of modern blockbusters and imitators of that very Alien.

Ridley Scott personally did not want to build a whole cinematic universe on the history of Space Jockeys, Engineers and alien explorers, but James Cameron was charged with this business, who directed the sequel to the original film called "Aliens." After that there were two more: one directed by David Fincher, the second by Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Today it is generally accepted that only "Alien" and "Aliens" can be watched, as they say, forever, although the third and fourth parts are quite watchable for themselves, and this despite the fact that he himself is not at all delighted with his previous involvement to this franchise.

Until a certain point, the film remained a quadrology. Of course, there was also his collision with the "Predator", but for obvious reasons we do not take this fact into account. Then Ridley Scott wanted to return to the Alien movie series, but he definitely came from afar. His "Prometheus" gave more questions than answers, so many people, with all due respect to the master, would like someone else to take up the development of the "Aliens" universe. Such a person was found, and he was Neil Blomkamp ("District 9", "A robot named Chappy", "Elysium: Heaven is not on Earth").

The acclaimed South African director (even if he is not a director of the level of Ridley Scott) has been developing the fifth part of "Alien" for a long time. Of course, as a true fan of the series, he would like to ignore the existence of the third and fourth chapters and continue the story exactly from the moment where Cameron's "Aliens" ended. But the influence in the film industry of the author of Blade Runner turned out to be much greater, so at a certain stage of production, the producers switched to the ideas of Ridley Scott.

This is understandable: Sir Ridley has planned in the future to shoot several sequels at once. He started just with the sequel to his "Prometheus", which was originally called "Paradise Lost", but then nevertheless changed the name to "Testament".

Both projects were intended to expand the world and smoothly lead the viewer to the events of the original sci-fi horror film.

Now we know that this is not all. Ridley Scott plans to film Awakening in the future, which will take place between Prometheus and Covenant. Thus, as you can see, a whole trilogy of prequels is planned, after which, according to the author of "Gladiator", another one will be launched into production. Both of them will bring the viewer exactly to the moment from which this whole story began in the distant 1979 - to "Alien".

In one of his interviews, Scott let it slip: "If Covenant is a success with the audience, then we will release the next film, and then 3 more." If everything goes as planned, then the first "Alien" will receive 6 prequels, which will take place before the events of the very first film in 1979, among which the part of "Awakening" will take pride of place.

Film project director

Ridley Scott will, of course, direct the next chapter in the Alien series.

Awakening will be both a sequel to Prometheus and a prequel to The Covenant. This is called an interquel. This term refers to films in which the action takes place between the events of films that have already appeared on the big screen.

The British master, who previously forever inscribed his name in the history of cinema, now, as you can see, is simply taking pictures for his own pleasure. Even if many do not share his enthusiasm, in particular when watching the next cinematic creations of the maestro, at the same time, one cannot exclude the fact that, in general, everything comes out quite organically in the end. If what Ridley Scott excelled at was the visual design of his films. At least, there are no complaints about this part of his works. Well, the plot in history and its denouement is already a matter of taste for everyone.

As for "Awakening", the winner of the Cannes Film Festival prize for "Best Debut", which he received for the film "The Duelists", says that he already has a ready-made script for the project. It remains only to film the events captured in it and show it all on the big screen. If all goes well, then after the chapter entitled Awakening Ridley Scott will happily start developing a new trilogy, the events of which will continue everything that was previously shown in the "Testament".

Cast

Since the events of Awakening develop after Prometheus, but even before what happened in Covenant, this gives us every reason to believe that we will eventually see the long-awaited return of those actors to the appearance of which again, it seemed, we no longer expected when watching "Alien".

So, on the set of Awakening, the following will surely be involved:

  • Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Sherlock Holmes: A Play of Shadows)
  • Michael Fassbender (Shame, Steve Jobs, X-Men: First Class).

As we all remember, their heroes in the ending of "Prometheus" went to the planet of the Creators in search of answers to questions why they once ignored the upbringing of the human race, which they themselves created. Recall that their heroes were named Elizabeth Shaw (archaeologist) and David (android robot), respectively.

Story line

The plot of the film can be easily determined in advance. Archaeologist Elizabeth Shaw and android robot David head towards the planet of Creators. Here, in their homeland, they are trying to find answers to age-old questions. And although the robot is not so interested in the people whom, however, it serves, but the person is extremely interested in why the Engineers, who are also Space Jockeys, visited Earth in the distant past to lay the foundation for humanity on this planet, and then departed from their original plan.

But in an interview with Empire, Ridley Scott hinted that the evolution of the Alien is "almost over", and in "Awakening" the main emphasis will not be on xenomorphs, but on another story dedicated to artificial intelligence. Thus, we are talking about the android robot David performed by Michael Fassbender and about what kind of world he can create on a new planet if he can act without restrictions and external instructions. Perhaps, on a free planet, a robot with artificial intelligence will create its own empire of Xenomorphs.

Additional comments from the director also suggest a possible return of the Engineers' ship. This means that in fact their race is not destroyed - they will see what happened in Paradise and want to take revenge on David.

The director also made it clear that the film will once again touch upon the topic of arrogance of a person who is so confident in his own high destiny that sometimes he dares to play God and create “second class” people like themselves, but often forgets that they sometimes surpass their creator. Such comments once again confirm the version that it is David who can become the central character of the "Awakening". But in the Universe of Space Jockeys and Xenomorphs, there will certainly be many more questions to which you will have to look for answers.

The ending of "Awakening" should smoothly lead the viewer to the events with which he was already acquainted after watching the "Testament".

Movie release date

Release date of the movie "Alien: Awakening" - 2019-2020. There is no specific data regarding the release of a new chapter in the Alien film series so far.

I would like to believe that this part of the movie franchise will be much more informative and, finally, will shed light on the very unfortunate act of the Engineers. It will be scary, it will be interesting, it will be beautiful. We look forward to Awakening in the Alien series that fans have high hopes for.

Trailer the movie "Alien: Awakening" is expected soon, but in the meantime, watch the video from fans:
