The most sensational group of 2014 transforms both dance and classical music ...

At first glance, classical symphonic and dance music do not go well together. The refined restraint of a concert hall and the noisy atmosphere of an ordinary, average, nightclub, this is heaven and earth. But this difference, apparently, cannot be considered insurmountable. Mozart and Beethoven were very famous during their lifetime, just like David Guetta and Tiesto in 2014. Therefore, it is possible that such different music, if performed correctly, can also coexist. After all, how else to explain the fast-paced path to fame of the band Clean Bandit!

Clean bandit is a British electro band founded in 2009. This group released the track "Mozart" s House "in 2013, which was marked at number 17 on the UK Singles Chart, and in 2014 released a new single" Rather Be ", which reached number 1 on the same chart.

Breakthrough

Clean Bandit took a long time to achieve success. Early on in their career, a recording studio asked if they were a cheap pop band. But whoever laughs last, and in this case it was the Cambridge quartet, when their fourth single, Rather Be - an elegant and cheerful mix of violin melodies, dance rhythms and head-spinning soul vocals by Jess Glynn - soared to the top of several European charts at the start. 2014 year. He also has an incredible 184 million views on YouTube and that number is growing.

Carier start

Three members of the group - Jack Patterson, Grace Chatto and Milan Neil Amin-Smith met while attending Jesus College, Cambridge University. They studied Russian language, architecture and economics, among other subjects. Grace and Milan played a string quartet together, but Clean Bandit essentially began to take shape when Grace and Jack began dating, and Jack, an aspiring producer and club impresario, began remixing his girlfriend's classic compositions with energetic house beats. ... When his brother, Luke, joined him and started playing drums, Clean Bandit was formed.

First hit

“When we started, we just wanted to make music that we could dance to and that stood out from the crowd,” Grace tells Varsity magazine at Cambridge University. It’s hard to think of a better description of their first single, Mozart’s House, combining fragments from Wolfgang Amadeus’s # 21 string quartet with house rhythms and infectious vocals performed by their friend Ssegawa-Ssekintu Kiwanuka. It was released by the British dance music studio Black Butter, which gave rise to such groups as Rudimental and Gorgon City. The single became a minor sensation, proving that the idea of electronic chamber music was not so ridiculous.

Worldwide recognition

Clean Bandit didn't settle for the success of their single, released earlier in the year, and worked hard throughout 2014. New Eyes' long-awaited debut album came out in May, and in August they released the single Come Over featuring reggae vocalist Stylo G. Then Real Love came out in November (a new composition later added to the special edition of the album) and took second place in the UK charts.

Versatility

The relentless creative work of the Clean Bandit is a search in different directions. They take filming as seriously as they take music. Jack studied at the All-Russian State University of Cinematography, and currently the group has its own production company, Clean Film, which has created all the clips of the group, as well as fulfilling other orders. Clean Bandit have proven their worth in the classical genre as well with their performance with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in a special 45-minute Symphony in Three Movements program on Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show.

Looking to the future

Making the music of the future is not easy because not everyone is able to understand such music. “At a party I met a guy who was very angry with us for using excerpts from Shostakovich's # 8 String Quartet,” Jack says in an interview with the Guardian. - He tried to convince me that this is impossible. I think he thought it was humiliating for a work of art, but he really didn't know what he was talking about. He was not even able to sing a simple melody! "

Excerpt from Clean Bandit

- And you're still afraid! Eh you, learned people, - said the third courageous voice, interrupting both. - Then you, artillerymen, are very learned because you can take everything with you, and vodka and snacks.
And the owner of the courageous voice, apparently an infantry officer, laughed.
“And you're still afraid,” the first familiar voice continued. - Afraid of the unknown, that's what. Say what you like, that the soul will go to heaven ... after all, we know that there is no sky, but there is only one sphere.
Again a courageous voice interrupted the artilleryman.
- Well, treat the herbalist to yours, Tushin, - he said.
“Ah, this is the same captain who stood at the storekeeper without boots,” thought Prince Andrei, gladly recognizing his pleasant philosophizing voice.
- A grass-root can be, - said Tushin, - but all the same to comprehend the future life ...
He didn't finish. At this time a whistle was heard in the air; nearer, nearer, faster and more audible, more audible and faster, and the core, as if not having finished speaking everything that was needed, exploding splashes with superhuman force, splashed into the ground not far from the booth. The earth seemed to gasp from a terrible blow.
At the same instant, the first to jump out of the booth was little Tushin with a pipe bitten on its side; his kind, intelligent face was somewhat pale. Behind him came the owner of a courageous voice, a dashing infantry officer, and ran to his company, buttoning up his buttons as he ran.

Prince Andrew stopped on horseback on the battery, looking at the smoke of the cannon, from which the cannonball flew out. His eyes scattered across a vast expanse. He saw only that the formerly immobile masses of the French were swaying, and that there really was a battery to the left. The smoke has not yet cleared on it. Two French horsemen, probably adjutants, galloped up the mountain. Downhill, probably to strengthen the chain, a clearly visible small column of the enemy was moving. The smoke of the first shot had not yet cleared, as another smoke and a shot appeared. The battle has begun. Prince Andrew turned his horse and galloped back to Grunt to look for Prince Bagration. Behind him, he heard the cannonade grow louder and more frequent. Apparently, ours were beginning to answer. Below, in the place where the envoys were passing, rifle shots were heard.
Lemarrois (Le Marierois) with a formidable letter from Bonaparte had just galloped to Murat, and the ashamed Murat, wanting to make amends for his mistake, immediately moved his troops to the center and bypassing both flanks, hoping even before the evening and before the arrival of the emperor to crush the insignificant who stood in front of him, squad.
"Started! Here it is!" thought Prince Andrew, feeling how the blood more often began to rush to his heart. “But where is it? How will my Toulon put it? " he thought.
Passing between the same mouths that ate porridge and drank vodka a quarter of an hour ago, he saw everywhere the same rapid movements of soldiers building up and taking apart guns, and on all faces he recognized the feeling of animation that was in his heart. "Started! Here it is! Scary and fun! " spoke the face of every soldier and officer.
Before reaching the fortification under construction, he saw in the evening light of a cloudy autumn day, riding towards him towards him. The foremost, in a burka and a cap with straps, rode a white horse. It was Prince Bagration. Prince Andrew stopped, waiting for him. Prince Bagration suspended his horse and, recognizing Prince Andrew, nodded his head to him. He continued to look ahead while Prince Andrew told him what he saw.
Expression: “it's started! here it is!" there was even on the strong brown face of Prince Bagration with half-closed, dull, as if sleepy eyes. Prince Andrey gazed with uneasy curiosity at this motionless face, and he wanted to know if he was thinking and feeling, and what he was thinking, what was this man feeling at that moment? "Is there anything at all behind this motionless face?" Prince Andrew asked himself, looking at him. Prince Bagration bowed his head, in agreement with the words of Prince Andrey, and said: "Good", with such an expression as if everything that happened and what he was told was exactly what he had already foreseen. Prince Andrew, pushed up by the speed of the ride, spoke quickly. Prince Bagration pronounced the words with his oriental accent especially slowly, as if suggesting that there was nowhere to hurry. He started, however, with a trot on his horse in the direction of Tushin's battery. Prince Andrew, along with his retinue, went after him. They were following Prince Bagration: a retinue officer, the prince's personal adjutant, Zherkov, an orderly, an officer on duty on an englised beautiful horse, and a state official, an auditor who, out of curiosity, asked to go to battle. The auditor, a plump man with a full face, looked around with a naive smile of joy, shaking on his horse, imagining a strange sight in his camlot overcoat on a furshtat saddle among the hussars, Cossacks and adjutants.

Clean Bandit is an English band whose work is a cocktail of house, electronics and classical music. The band consists of brothers Jack Patterson and Luke Patterson, Grace Chatto and Milan Neil Amin-Smith.

Jack, Grace and Milan met while attending Jesus College at the University of Cambridge. Grace and Milan played in the university's string quartet Chatto Quartet. Jack Patterson, who was then meeting with Grace, began to record their music, cut it, overdub drums and synthesizers. This can be considered the beginning of the Clean Bandit.

Grace and Jack lived in Russia for some time (Jack studied at VGIK). The name Clean Bandit is a literal translation of the Russian expression "Clean bandit", which means something like "complete bastard." This is the first time we hear such an expression at Musical Shuttle, so we are slightly bewildered. Anyway.

The group released several mini-albums, videos were shot for many of the songs. Grace and Jack set up their own film production company, Cleanfilm, to produce music videos for themselves and other artists.

"A + E" - the first single of the group, was released in 2012, hit the British singles chart and took the honorable 100th place there.

Several more singles were released in 2013.

Mozart's House consists of two songs and several remixes.
The composition "Mozart's House" reached number 17 on the charts. The beginning of the song is frankly danceable, with house beats and looped vocals. The instruments come in completely unexpectedly and add variety to the composition. The video for the song was filmed in Moscow, at one of the railway stations.

The second track is called "UK Shanty". The song alternates between gentle female vocals, strings and electronic sounds reminiscent of eight-bit prefixes. In the video, musicians play strings on a tiny rocky island in the middle of the sea. British model Lily Cole took part in the filming of the video.

The musicians say that most of all they were afraid of damaging the instruments, and in fact it was not as dangerous as the underwater scenes of the video:

“All underwater footage was taken in the outdoor pool. We arrived at the site two days before Lily. It was mid-January and the water temperature was only 10 degrees. We were worried that Lily might refuse to dive into the pool, fearing for her health, and our friend Henry came up with a wood heating system to raise the water temperature. "

Dust Clears is another single from 2013.

At the beginning of 2014, the single "Rather Be" was released - the most successful in the history of the group.

The single, co-recorded with Jess Glynne, peaked at # 1 on the charts and is currently at # 3. The song is characterized by a soft, melodic pop sound, with the band's signature string parts.

The band's debut album, "New Eyes", will be released on May 12. The standard edition will include 13 songs, and the deluxe version of the album will consist of - Wow! - 18 tracks and 7 video clips. Will wait!

The night before, the Tsvetnoy department store hosted a concert of British electronics engineers, winners of this year's Grammy, whose work is closely associated with Russia. We caught them right before the first solo concert in Moscow and found out how they became popular so quickly.

In 2013, Clean Bandit released the track Mozart "s House, which was ranked 17th inUK Singles Chart, in 2014 - the single Rather Be, which took first place in the same chart. And in 2015, the composition was awarded a Grammy in the nomination« Best Dance Recording».

The history of the group in which the participants gatheredstring quartet from Cambridge, started in 2009. Surprisingly, some members of the team have an important part of their lives connected with Moscow: Grace Chatto studiedplaying the cello at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, andJack Patterson - operator at VGIK. In short, it was from here that the name of the group came - "pure bandit", the first video for the song was shot here.Mozart's House, and in general, the influence of Russia has greatly influenced the work Clean Bandit. The group's compositions always have strong vocal parts, violin and cello sound. What seemed at first unattainable to young musicians became real in 2015.

Last year you became one of the best music groups in the world and received a Grammy. Were you ready for this?

Grace: At that time, our group was 7 years old and we dreamed of going on tours and traveling, but we certainly did not expect an award. Billions of people around the world listen to different music, thousands and thousands of songs - and suddenly we get a Grammy. It was just crazy to find out about it.

Jack: Yes, it was very strange to go to this for so many years.

I know that when you lived in Moscow, you were inspired by Russian house music coming from the tents. What inspires you now?

Grace: We often heard this kind of music on Gorbushka, and we even liked it. Now we prefer variety: classical, rock, modern music. Still, of course, travel plays an important role. Recently we were on a music tour in Japan and at the same time decided to recreate our documentary, which was filmed many years ago when we were vacationing there. Moreover, Jack himself directs all our clips and videos, and it was not that difficult.

What contemporary musicians do you like?

Jack: I listen to modern jazz, I like it when there is a lot of saxophone. This is probably because I do pop music myself every day.

Grace: We love both Disclosure and James Blake. We even played together with Disclosure a few years ago. It's hard to say who else you like, because there are so many different artists around, playing in a variety of styles.

Have you thought about collaborating with other musicians?

Jack: In fact, each of our tracks is a collaboration with different artists. We would like to do a joint project with musicians from Asia. It would be cool.

Grace: We also do remixes, made tracks with Gorgon City, Jess Glenn, performed with Marina & The Diamonds.

When will the track with Marina & The Diamonds come out?

Grace: We don't know yet, just recording vocals. I would like to process the material as soon as possible, we have a lot of accumulated tracks, and we are trying to finish everything.

I know Jack is directing your music videos. How do you work? Who is responsible for what?

Jack: Grace and I are producers.

Grace: Jack shoots all our videos, and helps with editing and other technical things of his classmates from VGIK - Dasha Novitskaya and Anna Patarakina. They are operators with Jack.

Describe your music in a few words.

Jack: (Laughs.) In Russian? It's complicated! Dancing, funny, melancholic and a little contrasting.

What are your plans for the near future?

Jack: To release the next album, go on tour, complete all recordings and finish producing them.

Where do you go after Moscow?

Grace: For quite a long time we will tour America with Duran Duran, then Asia in December.
