Nizhny Novgorod named after M. Gorky is one of the oldest theaters in the country. It has existed for over 200 years.

How the theater was born

It began its existence in Nizhny Novgorod in 1798. Its founder was Prince N.G. Shakhovsky. It was a serf theater and all the actors came from serf families. The performances were shown in one of the prince's houses, which was located on the corner of Bolshaya Pecherskaya and Malaya Pecherskaya streets. The house was rebuilt into a theater, it had a stall for one hundred spectators, a gallery for two hundred spectators, boxes for 27 and 50 seats. The building was gloomy and dilapidated. The boxes were more like stalls. There were huge holes on the curtain, into which someone's nose periodically protruded, someone's eyes peeped out, and a head protruded. From the day of its foundation until 1824, the theater was called the Nizhny Novgorod City and Fair Theater of Prince Shakhovsky. The repertoire included tragedies, comedies, ballets and operas. Since 1824 the name has changed, from now on it was the Nizhny Novgorod Theater, and since 1896 - the Nikolaev Drama Theater (Nizhny Novgorod). The history of its existence in different periods evolved in different ways.

The years from 1824 to 1896 were difficult for the theater. After his death, his heirs sold the theater along with all the actors to two wealthy theatergoers, but 10 years later the owners changed again. This could not but affect the quality of the performances. The frequent change of entrepreneurs led to the fact that the performances became less interesting, the actors began to play worse, incomes decreased, while the building and the troupe had to be maintained, which led to losses. In 1853, the theater building burned down. The year of revival can be considered 1855. Then, at the request of the governor, the theater was reopened, but this time in the house that belonged to P.E. Bugrov. During the period from 1863 to 1894, the building experienced several fires. The City Duma sought funds for its restoration, but N. Bugrov, its owner, did not want the theater to be located in his grandfather's house again. He allocated 200 thousand rubles for the construction of a new building. The city added 50 thousand to this amount, the government provided a subsidy and after 2 years a new theater building was built on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, where it is located to this day. The opening took place in 1896, the premiere performance was the opera by M.I. Glinka "Life for the Tsar", in which the young and still unknown F. Chaliapin sang. Over the years, such great actors and actresses as K.S. Stanislavsky, V.F. Komissarzhevskaya, M.S. Shchepkin and others.

20th century

In the 20th century (Nizhny Novgorod) it changed its name many times. In 1918 it was called Soviet, in 1923 - the First State, from 1932 - the First Gorky (after the city was renamed to Gorky), it was State, and regional, and regional. The name that he wears now was received by him in 1990 - the Nizhny Novgorod State Order of the Red Banner of Labor Academic Drama Theater named after M. Gorky. In the period from 1928 to 1945, 191 new productions appeared in the repertoire. Among them were performances based on classical works, plays by foreign authors of that time, but the overwhelming majority belonged to Soviet authors. It seemed to me that in this beautiful building, flooded with electric light, I would forget the thorny path of a provincial actor, that all my bright dreams of a real art theater would come true here. Every time I entered a new theater, I was seized with some kind of awe and I caught myself walking along its corridors on tiptoe, reverently.

N.I.Sobolshchikov-Samarin

The Nizhny Novgorod State Academic Drama Theater named after M. Gorky is one of the oldest in Russia, it is more than 200 years old. The history of the theater begins from the time when Prince Shakhovskoy, having moved permanently to Nizhny Novgorod and moved the troupe and property of his serf theater to the city, opened the Nizhny Novgorod public theater, and its serf actors played the first performance based on the comedy by D. I. Fonvizin in it. "Choosing a tutor".

The prince himself selected plays for performances, giving preference to the classical repertoire, and in addition to comedies, tragedies and vaudeville, his theater also staged operas and ballets.

Theater history

Until 1838, the theater regularly gave performances - until the frequent change of owners began. It was during this difficult period that Nicholas I ordered to arrange a new theater building and theater square. Alas, already in 1953 the theater burned down to reopen two years later in the house of the merchant Pyotr Bugrov.

However, the theater's affairs only worsened. The actors had nothing to pay, they needed money for repairs, and the entrepreneurs kept changing and changing, unable to change the situation. Everything went to the fact that the theater in Nizhny Novgorod would finally cease to exist.

The All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition, which was supposed to be held in Nizhny Novgorod in 1896, saved the situation. The City Duma decided that the absence of a theater in such a situation could compromise the city, and therefore it must be urgently repaired.

In 1968 the theater was awarded the title of "academic". 6 People's Artists of Russia, 1 Honored Art Worker of the Russian Federation, 6 Honored Artists of Russia, 5 Honored Workers of Culture of the Russian Federation work here.

Theater repertoire

The theater's repertoire has always been based on the best examples of world classics and modern drama. The Nizhniy Novgorod Drama Theater is the only one in the country, on the stage of which, since 1901, all the plays of the great compatriot M. Gorky and individual performances of his prose have been staged.

Since 1896, the theater has been located in one of the most beautiful buildings on the central street of the city, built by the project of the chief architect of the imperial theaters, academician V.A.Shreter.

In recent years, the theater has taken part in international and all-Russian theater festivals and forums in

The Nizhny Novgorod Drama Theater has been named after its fellow countryman, the Soviet writer-playwright M. Gorky, since 1943. The institution, which is one of the oldest public theaters in Russia, has changed its name more than once. In 1940 it received the status of the state, in 1949 it was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and in 1968 it was awarded the honorary title "Academic". Today it is the only stage in the world on which all Gorky's plays were presented to the audience.

The Drama Theater of Nizhny Novgorod has trained many famous artists, including those awarded the titles "Honored" and "People's". At different times, K. Stanislavsky, M. Ermolova, M. Schepkin, V. Komissarzhevskaya, V. Dvorzhetsky, N. Levkoev, V. Samoilov, as well as other equally famous masters of theatrical art, performed from its stage.

Story

The first troupe at the private theater of the landowner Nikolai Shakhovsky was assembled from serfs who stood out among others for their acting talent. Having moved to Nizhny Novgorod for permanent residence, the prince took with him all the theatrical property and opened a public theater. The first performance was "The Choice of the Governor" based on the work of D. Fonvizin. Its premiere took place on February 7, 1798. This day is considered the date of the founding of the drama theater in Nizhny Novgorod.

The heirs of the founder, who died in 1824, were not interested in performing arts and three years later sold the theater together with the troupe, props and sets to two wealthy theatergoers who took on the functions of entrepreneurs. For more than ten years, business was progressing brilliantly, but further repeated changes in the owners of the theater led to the decline and growth of debts. In his history, this was the first, but not the only shock. However, the drama theater managed not only to survive, but also to achieve high success.

Building

Prince N. Shakhovskoy, who laid the foundation for the Nizhny Novgorod theater, rebuilt one of his houses to accommodate it (today the building of the Kulibin River School stands in its place). The stalls of the auditorium could accommodate 100 people, and the upper tier - 200 people. For a respectable audience, 27 lodges were envisaged. The building was destroyed in a fire in 1853.

The location of the new theater on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street was indicated in the city plan by Nicholas I himself, but it took a long time to buy the land for construction due to a lack of funds in the city budget. In 1855, the premises for the performances were temporarily leased out by the local merchant P. Bugrov. The building, erected shortly before this, was intended for a tenement house and was located on the Annunciation Square (now - Minin and Pozharsky). Governor M. Urusov, who was a great theater lover, personally asked him for the service.

Due to the irregularity of making rent payments, Bugrov's son in 1862 raised the issue of vacating real estate and selling it. A year later, the new owner died and the theater settled in the same building again. This time, Bugrov's grandson expressed dissatisfaction with the "inappropriate" use of his grandfather's house, but, being the largest homeowner, philanthropist, a member of the City Duma and the secular leader of the Nizhny Novgorod Old Believer community, he managed to make an offer that could not be refused. Nikolai Aleksandrovich allocated two hundred thousand rubles for the construction of a new theater building. A quarter of this amount was additionally contributed by the Duma, and the rest - by the government as a subsidy.

The theater building on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya was built in the style of academic eclecticism by the project of the Russian architect, academician V. Schreter. The Nikolaev Drama Theater, named after Nicholas I, was opened in May 1896, on the day of the coronation of Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna. The new season in the current building of the theater began in September of the same year with the premiere of the drama "Leaves rustle" based on the work of A. Yuzhin.

Monuments to Yevgeny Evstigneev and Nikolai Dobrolyubov are erected on both sides of the central facade of the theater building.

Former names

Over its more than 200-year history, the drama theater has been called differently - Prince Shakhovsky, City, Yarmarkochny, Nikolaevsky. After the October Revolution, it was renamed Soviet and 1st State. With the change in 1932 of the toponym "Nizhny Novgorod" to "Gorky", the theater was officially called Gorky - first, the first drama, then the regional, regional and, finally, the state.

The modern name of the Nizhny Novgorod State Order of the Red Banner of Labor Academic Drama Theater named after M. Gorky was given in 1990. The last changes took place due to the return to the ancient city of its historical toponym.

D. Merezhkovsky, "Paul I", 12+, drama in 2 acts, stage director - E. Nevezhina. Historical plot and symbolic theatrical language in the play based on the play by the ideologist of Russian symbolism D. Merezhkovsky. The play "Pavel I" is an outstanding work of Merezhkovsky the playwright. V. Brusov emphasized the "nobility and severity of the appearance" of this play, compared it with Shakespeare's "chronicles". "The drama Paul I, which I wrote in Paris, was confiscated immediately after it was published, in 1908. Four years later, I was tried for it, accused of" impudent disrespect for the supreme power. " (DS Merezhkovsky "Autobiographical note").

Gospola Golovlev (02.11.2019) on the Portal of cultural heritage of Russia Culture of the Russian Federation
M.E.Saltykov-Shchedrin, "Gentlemen Golovlevs", 16+. Madness in 2 parts based on the novel of the same name, staged by Vladimir Zherebtsov. "The novel" The Lord Golovlevs "is one of the heights of M.E.Saltykov-Shchedrin's creativity and Russian literature of the 19th century, - says the production director I. Sakaev. - The material allows you to combine very good artists of different ages into one dramatic story. not blissful, but conflicted, painful and very Russian. She is far from playful, but at the same time very sensual, passionate. Saltykov-Shchedrin has no indifferent characters: if they really hate, then sincerely, if they lust, then with their whole body, if they are afraid, then with all his being. The destruction of the family, the freak show "in a kinship" are built into an apocalyptic picture of a terrible and at the same time attractive world. "

Sheep and wolves (spring 2018) on the Cultural Heritage Portal of Russia Kultura.rf
A. Ostrovsky "Wolves and Sheep", 12+, comedy in 2 acts, stage director A. Reshetnikova. The plays of the great A. Ostrovsky have been staged on the Russian stage for almost 200 years. And they will always put it. In my own way, in different ways. The theater has its own "Wolves and Sheep", its own Ostrovsky, seen through the eyes of director A. Reshetnikova, set designer B. Shlyamin, costume designer A. Klimov and artists. On the stage, there is still a modern story about a landowner-"racketeer": deception, fraud, love-dislike, simmering passions. Irony, paradoxes, many subtle observations of male and female nature, and many incredibly funny moments. The eternal comedy of Russian life.

Cherry Orchard (spring 2013) on the Cultural Heritage Portal of Russia Kultura.rf
A.P. Chekhov, "The Cherry Orchard", 12+, a comedy in two acts, stage director and musical arrangement V. Sarkisov. After the performance, the audience says that they discovered in Chekhov's play something that they had not noticed before. It is worth watching this multi-layered, piercing performance, performed in the style of black-and-white cinema of the beginning of the century, in order to answer your questions about Russia, Europe, which we lived through in the twentieth century. and about our own destiny with you.

Uncle Vanya (spring 2013) on the Cultural Heritage Portal of Russia Kultura.rf
A.P. Chekhov, "Uncle Vanya", 12+, play in two acts, stage director and musical arrangement V. Sarkisov. The director of the play, V. Sarkisov, managed to stage "not a drama in life, but a drama of life itself." Each of the heroes lives its own story, which, according to the conception of the author and the director, are combined into a common drama of life. Each hero, each actor is a soloist in the play, but does not violate Chekhov's ensemble. The director's view of the characters in the play is interesting, especially the image of Uncle Vanya. For a long time he was regarded as a hero-resonator, attributed to him the features of a rebel and a martyr. For Sarkisov, Uncle Vanya is a charming eccentric, tragic in his comic. Sarkisov returned to the roots, Chekhov's objectivity with his attention to the ordinary person. This performance is not about the fate of the intelligentsia at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, it is about people outside the time frame, about human feelings and lost lives.

Enjoy your viewing and see you soon in the theater!
